Glasgow Cenotaph* outside City Chambers
For John Baxter (RAF Regiment) Killed 1988Ā
The reason I never forget to Rememberā¦
To ALL who died through war or in their countryās uniform Directly orĀ IndirectlyĀ :
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royalĀ Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,Ā There is music in the midst of desolationĀ And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,Ā Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.Ā They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;Ā They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Ā Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.Ā At the going down of the sun and in the morningĀ We will remember them.
*Cenotaph is Greek for āEmpty Tombā

I don't know if you have already answered this, or care to voice your opinions about it all, but how do you feel about Scotland's independence? Is it the right thing for the country? As a Scot myself, I am excited about the possibility of having an independent nation again, but at the same time I am concerned on whether or not it is fiscally a good idea. Do you think the referendum is going to pass?
Iām voting Yes. I wasnāt sure I could, but apparently Iām still registered at home so Iām voting by proxy (thanks Mum).
it took a while for me to wade in, as both sides have been shouting over each other with a lot of blanket statements and scaremongering tactics, but then I started looking at figures.
The population of Scotland makes up 8.3% of the UK. Thatās tiny. Then when you consider the resources the country provides for the rest of the union (e.g. 62% timber production, 40% wind, wave and solar energy, Ā 90% of surface fresh water and an average of 30% fish and livestock) and start looking at those figures on a per capita basis, suddenly you realiseĀ Scotland could become one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Of course I completely understand why this would make the rest of the UK nervous. But I do believe that an independent Scotland wouldnāt necessarily mean those resources would be completely cut off from England and Wales; they just wonāt be entitled to them in the same way they currently are. Think of a young adult with a lot of potential, who has some toxic/manipulative elements in their relationship with their parents, leaving home for the first time with the intention of succeeding by themselves and cutting those toxic elements out. Thatās p much how I see Scotland right now.
And what are those ātoxic elementsā, you ask? Well thereāsĀ the uncertain future of the NHS;Ā theĀ political party currentlyĀ obstinately in power that most of Scotland didnāt vote for (we literally have more pandas in the country than Tory MPs); the fact that the UK, with increasing influence of parties like UKIP, is under threat of leaving the EU (while the EU would gladly take on Scotland on its own); increasing cuts on welfare, particularly for disabilityĀ and food aid;Ā and also, keeping fucking Trident missiles in the country.
AĀ lot of people think thereās too much uncertainty to come from a Yes vote, but hereās the thing! Scotland voting Yes does NOT mean instant independence this Thursday. The question of the referendum is āShould Scotland be an independent country?ā If the country votes Yes, THEN theyāll get to work on making it happen.Ā It likely wonāt officially take place until, like, 2016. The plans are in place, but thereās no use acting on them yet in the chance itās a No vote.
Iām optimistic that the referendum is going to pass. But even if it ends up being a No vote, Iām also of the belief that this will still pave the way for some serious political and economical change for Scotland - because I think that the vote will be close enough that either way this will be a serious wake-up call for Westminster, if not the rest of the UK.
I want to make it clear if I havenāt already that Iām not voting Yes as a slight against England based on some 700 year-old William Wallacey grudge. I live here, I like it here, I like the people here. I just like my home country more, and want to see it flourish - or at the very least, exist - separately from Westminster/Conservative rule. Whether I move back home next year, or settle in a house in Edinburgh when Iām old and tired of travelling, Iād like to return to the country knowing its future is in its own hands.
Anyway if none of this helps you make up your mind, do it because Dave Grohl says so
Vote Yes because (Dave said so)
Vote Yes because (Dave said so)
YES INFO RALLY, George Square 2PM-8PM
ā¦brought on by all the comments Iāve saw & made on the Internetā¦
In all Honesty ⦠My life experience of living in Scotland for 40+ years is the reason Iām voting YesĀ The Scotland people who left to goto pastures anew such as down south do not know the Scotland that exists today & how it came to be so be at a stage of crying out for a better way! Their Life experience is coloured by being on the outside looking in & having a limited field of view.
Everyone who is entitled to vote should vote Yes or Noā¦that is their choice ā¦But they should do it with free thought & an open mind.. not be influenced by any particular individuals but ultimately by the possibilitiesā¦
This is nothing to do with any politician (esp the existing ones who will disappear into history soon (North & South of the border)
This is about the people of Scotland (regardless of origin) making a better future rather than the ongoing repeats of the past
I will vote Yes regardless of what anyone says or does because for most of my life I have NEVER understood how little Scotland was thought of by othersā¦the country I am so proud to live in could be so undermined & considered 2nd class, less important, & inferior⦠whilst producing some of the greatest minds & people that have shaped our planet throughout the centuriesā¦& yet STILL be considered the things listed above?!
Vote YES or Vote NO if you have that right (to Vote) but donāt Think Little..Think Big - Scotland deserves to be a better place than it is now & to have a voice that can be heard above London & Westminsterās incessant, inward looking, self indulgent crowing!! Thanks Alex x
