HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINA!

I remember doing five gigs in one weekend on the FROOT album, and of course you’re gonna feel completely in tatters after that. But that kind of thing will never happen again for me. I think we’ve all had to assess what “quality of life” means to us, no matter what our job is, and I’ve definitely changed my lifestyle because of that. Coming back to relationships, it’s been a challenge for me as a young woman to know how much to compromise in order to maintain the relationship and in order to guarantee that it will continue. And I think I just ended up living a life that didn’t feel like my own anymore. I just felt totally uncentered, and only coming out of that experience [made me] realize I was living someone else’s life. I do feel very free on this record. And one of the good things about me is that, when I write, I don’t worry about anything that other people are going to say. That happens later in the process. [Laughs.] But when I’m actually making a song, I never feel any censorship. […] Songwriting has always been a vehicle for me to explore things that challenge me, and things that upset me. So it’s definitely tricky to organize thoughts on really important subjects, and at the end of the day, whatever people think, that’s just how I’ve been able to deal with that at the time.
