When Dean woke up, he almost had no idea where he was. If it weren’t for the stale smell of death surrounding him, he wouldn’t have ever remembered he was in the hospital. That horrific car crash, the smell of burnt rubber and blood; Dean felt achy all over. He shivered and tried to sit up slowly, a pain shooting through his side and down his left leg. Then he remembered: Caroline was with him.
He pushed himself out of bed, ignoring the pain as best he could, and ran down the hall to the nurses station. He slammed his hands down onto the counter and craned his neck into the window. “Hello? I need some help here!" he shouted, tapping the glass.
"Dean? What are you doing?" Meredith said, coming up behind him. “You should be resting."
He shook his head and clutched his side, the pain suddenly growing worse. “Where’s Caroline? I need to see her."
Meredith shook her head and took him by the arm, slowly leading him back towards his room. “You need to get back in bed. You’ll pop your stitches."
He jerked his arm out of her grasp and groaned, the feeling of the stitches finally becoming evident. “If you don’t take me to her, I’ll rip the stitches out myself."
Meredith rolled her eyes. “Dean," she protested.
He raised an eyebrow. “You think I’m kidding?" He lifted his shirt and dug into his wound, slowly lifting the skin beneath the stitching. He bit back a scream; this was agonizing.
"Okay!" Meredith said, putting her hands up to stop him. “But Dean, there’s something you need to know first."
Dean studied her face, her brow suddenly furrowed with panic and unease. “What is it? Is she all right?" He’d never be able to live with himself if he seriously injured the only person he’d ever had feelings for: real feelings. The love thing.
Meredith sighed and clutched her clipboard to her chest. “She is now. But when you came in, she was in really bad shape. I… I gave her something to help the healing process along."
They stopped in front of Caroline’s room and Dean peered in. She was still asleep, or at least she looked to be sleeping. She looked peaceful; thank God. He turned back to Meredith. “I don’t see the problem."
She looked down, and Dean got the feeling that he wasn’t going to like her response. “I gave her something to help the healing process along," she repeated, stressing the point.
Dean’s eyes clouded, knowing exactly what she did; it was what she was famous for, how she healed almost all of her patients. “You did what?"
"She was going to die, Dean. If I didn’t give it to her, she’d be gone. But something happened; I don’t know how it happened but she did die… and came back."
Caroline was a vampire. Dean couldn’t believe it. He ran his hands over his head and peered back into her room. Her chest moved up and down slowly, and soon her eyes fluttered open. She smiled at him from behind the glass and waved him in.
He turned back to Meredith, who had tears in her eyes. “Dean, I’m sorry."
He put his hand up and stopped her. “Don’t," he said, pausing. “You ruined her life."
"She would’ve died!" Meredith shouted, glancing down the hall.
"Then she would’ve died a human being!" Dean felt himself getting angry to the point of doing stupid shit, so he back away from her. “Stay away from us, Meredith, I mean it. If I see you in here again, I will kill you myself."
