We know vaccines painful, and by comparing horses at rest with horses getting vaccinated, we've been able to determine how they express pain visually. By looking at horses with disorders like colic, broken bones, wounds, and so on, we can determine their facial expressions during more severe pain.

At zookeeper school we were drilled through the pain faces of the most common lab animals and livestock. Nowadays I believe this has become a routine lesson in all animal related fields, but the general public still doesn't know that this is a thing that exists.

Here are all the pain face/grimace scales I've been able to find. Please study them if you interact with any of these animals on a regular basis:

Let's take "bisexual", for example. That's a nice, straightforward term – surely it's meant more or less what it means now straight from the get-go, right?

In reality, over the course of its 250-year history, the word "bisexual" has variously meant what we would understand today from the words "crossdressing", "genderfluid", "nonbinary", "intersex", and several more besides. It didn't settle on its present definition in popular usage until the 1980s, and some queer publications continued to use it in older senses –sometimes in multiple senses within the same publication – well into the 2000s. There are intersex people alive today who still identify as "bisexual" because they grew up with one of the word's older definitions.

(Given the fandom-adjacency of this blog, I'm sure many folks reading this post have heard anecdotes about how Naoko Takeuchi accidentally made Sailor Uranus nonbinary because she didn't understand the difference between being bisexual and being genderfluid; that's actually a pretty understandable mistake to make, as an author writing in 1994 was probably working from sources that used the exact same terms to interchangeably describe both of those concepts!)

So, genuinely no hard feelings, I get where y'all are coming from, but that was actually kind of my entire point

The Rosetta Stone was and is real.

This is indisputable. You can go see the Rosetta Stone on display right now!! I'd say you could even it touch it, but there's museum glass in the way, so that the oils on human skin can't further degrade this 2,000-year-old stele, which is one of the most important surviving historical texts in the world.

The Tower of Babel is not real, and it never was.

The Tower of Babel is a millennia-old religious story about a mythological tower, which serves as a mythological explanation for the origin of different human languages. Yes, there are some religious historians who speculate that the myth was inspired by one or another physical tower, but no, that doesn't prove anything other than "this is how many people in this cultural explained or understood that sort of event."

The Rosetta Stone, on the other hand, is an object of translation that actually exists

Our attempts to understand each other will not result in us being struck down by some force from on high!

And the true path to a world where we can all understand each other does not involve us all speaking the same language. That's racist bs
