Maker, this was bad-why couldnât she just have a relapse now and deal with the memory of it later; her whole side screaming with pain.
Sheâd taken a blow from a monster, a creature made completely of red lyrium-the man inside all of it gone.
The side swipe had broken most of that side, her arm and leg not wanting to move-it was difficult to breath and she could feel the wound gushing blood out onto the stretcher she was on.
âHealer! Help us!â
Miris turned to see two men carrying a stretcher into her tent, her hands still working to wrap the head wound of the soldier she was attending to. Â The elf faltered at the sight of the injured woman; she was losing a lot of blood and a few of her limbs were oddly skewed.
âPut her there, quickly!â Â She pointed to a sturdy wooden table towards the back. Â Its top was stained a deep red... blood never came out easy.
She immediately rushed to her side. Â The other would have to wait - this was far more pressing. Â âCan you hear me? Â Can you speak?â Â The healer asked, reaching to take her pulse. Â While faint, it was present.
âI need to close your wound before I begin setting your bones.â Â Her left hand gave off a soft blue light as she swept it over the length of the womanâs body. Â A numbing spell. Â âThis will help with some of the pain, but not all.â
& it was the healer that needed the healing.

âHey, maybe if it convinces people that mages arenât terrible demon possessed bloodthirsty people, Iâd be down for it. Â Though then it would be accusations of poisoning food as well, so I donât know how helpful that would be.â
He couldnât help but laugh as she showed him the stains on her palms. Â
âIâm afraid to ask how bad off the kitchen looked if you wound up this messy. Â Hopefully my tea party with demons will go a little better. Â I hope they forgive me for not bringing any cream, I donât think Iâd be able to keep it from spoiling.â
âWell, the kitchen is as spotless as ever... now.â Â Miris assured, a faint blush coloring the apples of her cheeks and the tips of her long, pointed ears.
âAs for your tea party,â she started, intent on changing the subject, âall will be well as long as you return in one piece.  Of course, if you find yourself in more pieces than usual, there is the possibility that I can remedy that.  But letâs try not to rely on it.â
While there were times she would travel with the group, this was not one of them. Â Miris was needed at Skyhold; refugees were steadily arriving and in need of medical attention.
@frostyhealer liked for a starter
âNo, really, itâs fine,â Rhiall insists with a negligent wave of a hand as she brushes past Miris. Sheâs losing blood like a faucet through a broken nose and she may have cracked a couple of ribs, but no, Itâs fine. Totally fine. âDemons. Rifts. You know how it goes.â
(Druffalo. It was a Druffalo. An angry one caught in the crossfire of a fight with a couple of wayward bandits, in the foothills outside Crestwood. Donât electrocute a Druffalo. It only ends in pain and embarrassing explanations to the healers.)
She brushes at her nose with the back of a hand and comes away with more blood than anticipated. She blinks. Squints at it. Then turns back around.
âYou wouldnât happen to have a handkerchief, would you?â She jokes, though the look in her eyes says, Okay, so, maybe I have a problem. Â
Miris has to fight not to roll her eyes as the Inquisitor passes her by. Of course, her fellow elf is completely fine. Because, apparently, the definition of âfineâ is now ânot fine; obviously injured; in need of medical attentionâ.Â
A knowing smile spreads across her face when Rhiall turns back her way. The steady stream of blood coming from the womanâs nose only dampens it slightly.
âI seem to have forgotten all of my handkerchiefs back at Skyhold. Lucky for you, I brought these...â Miris holds up her hands, fingers wiggling. âMay I assess the damage, Inquisitor?
âI will do my best to be as gentle as possible.â She vows, expression warm and welcoming.
mini wishlist
A character attempting to teach Miris how to physically defend herself in battle (and likely failing miserably).
âYou want me to... to hit you?â
Miris completely expending her magic to keep a seriously injured character alive and then needing to rely on traditional means to heal them.
âOh, Creators. Â I canât - thereâs not enough! Â Iâm so sorry, but this is going to hurt.â
Miris drinking a little too much at the tavern.
âIs that strawberry ale? Â Well, I guess I could have just one...â
Cullen waited on the side patiently while Miris examined the shoulder of one of his troops. âIf only we had extra garments to spare,â he exhaled a breath, brows knitting together with frustration. âWe were meant to receive a shipment from the coast two weeks ago, but we havenât received any word. I fear the shipment has been intercepted, and we can not ask the refugees here to give up their clothes. Theyâre freezing enough as it is.â
âThat is troubling news,â Miris admitted. Â What could she possibly do to aid the troops? Â Biting her bottom lip, the woman tapped her chin as she thought, a faraway look on her face. Â âThere is something. Â I truly do not know if it can be used in such a way...â Â She was speaking more to herself than to the commander, weighing the possibilities in her mind. Â âI suppose it wouldnât hurt to try. Â Weâd need to monitor for any adverse reactions, though.â
Focusing again on Cullen, she began to explain. Â âIn the past, I have seen healers raise the bodyâs temperature to fight a sickness; we could try to do the same, either by spell or other means. Â It may help combat the frostbite.â
The Inquisitor couldnât help but laugh at this. Â Magic made him uncomfortable, but she was skilled with it, and he trusted she knew what he was doing. Â
âMagic in the kitchen eh?  Maybe that should be pursued further.  Launch a fireball at the roast and get it instantly cooked, mash berries with it instead of with⌠ Whatever people use to mash berries, freeze things to keep them from going bad, the possibilities are endless!â
He grinned and went back to working on his dagger while talking.
âHow in the world did you use it to mash berries? Â I donât have a damn clue how youâd even go about trying that.â
âNow that you mention it, Iâm surprised more cooks arenât mages. Â Perhaps we should petition it to be considered for a new school of magic?â Â The elf teased, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
âHow in the world did I manage it? Â Oh, not very well, thatâs for sure. Â I used a bit too much force on my first attempt. Â Berries... everywhere. Â Figured I was better off going about it the old fashioned way.â Â She then turned her small hands over, palms up. Â There was purple there too, but it wouldnât be coming off as easily as the smudge across her face.
âNot sure how long itâll take for this to fade...â
Miris shrugged before gesturing to his dagger. Â âGetting ready for tea with your demon friends?â

Road to Skyhold
Ashe sighed, knowing deep down that the healer was right. Â It didnât feel like a victory though. Â Many were lost in the fight, and their home was destroyed. Â With no where to go, they had little hope of surviving long. Â The only success was that so many got out, as well as all of her companions and advisors. Â
âWe need to figure out where to go, and fast. Â We wonât survive long on our own with so little food. Â I canât imagine that we managed to grab much in the way of supplies. Â There should at least be game around those willing and able can hunt for the time being. Thereâs also elfroot, we can grab whatever we stumble upon, itâs not much, but thatâs all we have.â
She was talking more to herself. Â With the advisors arguing, someone had to make a plan to survive, and everyone else seemed to be in shock over the events. Â Not that she could blame them, she wasnât sure how she was even still alive.
âWhat exactly are they arguing over?â
Listening to Ashe speak, Miris could clearly see the leader in her come to life. Â Even while distraught, the woman managed to clear her head and focus on the tasks at hand. Â She was right, they needed to find shelter... and quickly. Â The injured could only last so long out in the elements, and their supplies were steadily dwindling.Â
Turning to watch the advisors bicker, the elf gave a small shake of her head. Â âHonestly, Iâm not quite sure. Â I can easily speculate, but it might be best if you go and speak with them.â Â Miris preferred to avoid conflict, so sheâd kept her distance from the four of them, intent on tending to the wounded.
The longer Ashe had remained unconscious, the louder the arguing had gotten. Â Everyone was still suffering from the shock of it all - being attacked, losing Haven. Â It was no wonder many were on edge.
âI will need to see you after, though. Â I mean, if thatâs fine with you. Â I suspect you have a fractured rib or two.â
âI uh⌠I do not need your aid, but I did send for you. It seems this winter is harsher than some of my soldiers are accustomed to. The metal of their armor is freezing their skin. Unless you have something to help them, Iâll lose half my troops to frostbite before they even get a chance to fight our enemies.â
Miris took a moment to inspect the shoulder of a nearby troop. Â His skin was red and tender, burned not by fire, but ice. Â âIâve actually dealt with this once before, Commander, during a terrible winter back with my clan.
âFor those already injured, Iâll ready a healing paste. Â The others need to double up on the garments they wear under their armor. Â Some extra padding will go a long way.â

âPshh Iâm sure theyâre fine. Â They deal with worse on a regular basis. Â Like me. Â Or Sera. Â Or both of us if the fancy to get them really riled up strikes.â
He licked his thumb and gently used it and the end of his sleeve to get the flour and blueberry smudges off of Mirisâs face.
âBesides, youâre the baker of this fine batch, Iâd be disappointed if you hadnât tried your own creation. Â Cooks should always get first dibs since theyâre the ones putting in the hard work. Â Ah, thatâs better. Â Purple smudge is gone, and nearly all the flower is off your face. Â How exactly did you manage that?â
Miris couldnât help but scrunch her nose as Talon worked to remove the smear from her face. Â It reminded her of something her mother would have done.
âIâll admit, Iâve made plenty that hasnât turned out all that great. Â But these taste just fine to me. Â As for how I managed that... I may have tried to use a little magic to squish the berries. Â But it didnât work out all that great. Â I hope that doesnât turn you against the cake.â
She knew some people found magic off-putting, but she wasnât sure how Talon would feel about it.
Road to Skyhold
The archer forced herself to breathe deeply, well, as deep as she could with what was likely a bruised rib or two, and the panic that was building inside her. Â Shakily she took the drink and managed a few sips. Â
âI⌠ I just hope I gave us enough time⌠ I think it flew off before I got thrown down an old mining shaft I think, and into the cave.â
She looked at Miris, her eyes tearing up.
âI failed didnât I? Â I didnât kill it with the trebuchet.â
âYou did not fail.â Â Miris said, surprised at the strength in her voice. Â She took the womanâs larger hand in her own and gripped it tightly. Â âPerhaps you did not kill it, but you saved many lives tonight. Â That is where your victory lies.â
Every single person at camp owed their life to Ashe. Â She was the one that risked everything, stayed behind, to buy them time. Â If not for her, she was sure the Elder One would have killed them all.
