SHIVER. ap.

           the sapphire-eyed combat medic watched the chief, her eyes lowered at the slightest. she didn’t know herself- would she prefer the slow torture of knowing her loved one was alive- but she could not have them. or the other. angela didn’t know. ❝Before I answer-❞ a pause entered her, then continued- ❝- It was a question on a fortune cookie when I was visiting China a month or so ago..❞ angela responded to fareeha.

then she would’ve responded, ❝I think knowing they’re alive- as you said. But I’m stuck with the questions-❞ the combat doctor spoke- glancing at the taller woman. ❝I know one day everybody will die somehow. But knowing someone you love dying- its like a movie.❞ angela responded with a soft hum, a hand brushing her blonde bangs back.

        “A month or so ago and yet, you still remember.” She’d offer the doctor a smile. Weak and tired from having just returned from a mission, yet it was the best she could give to Angela- other than coffee. Though she does just that as well, pouring the both of them a freshly brewed cup. “Either it struck you deeply,” she continued, “or you have a good memory, doctor.”

Taking her own drink into her hand, Fareeha took a sip from it, eyes still locked anywhere but the doctor’s. “But it isn’t so far-fetched, is it? Knowing that someone you care for might - or is - going to die. Sometimes, however, you’re only given a second to realize it so before they’re gone. Others, a month or more. You should know what I mean, doctor.” For it was a common thing in the hospital and in battlefields. Numbered days and guns aimed at them. Given only a single second to scream no before a trigger is pulled.

A soft sigh escaped from her lips upon hearing the doctor’s words, hands busy wrapping the makeshift bandage she’d made out of her ripped sleeve around Angela’s ankle. 

True, it wasn’t anything life threatening. A bullet had merely scraped Angela’s ankle but it was deep enough to cause pain each time the doctor took a step, or so Fareeha had observed. The limping was, after all, quite obvious despite how much the doctor denied it. What more with the pain that would scrunch upon her face and the beads of sweat forming on her forehead. It wasn’t anything life threatening, but it left Angela in pain and Fareeha hated that. She hated that she couldn’t do much about it. She was no healer, no fixer. All that she knew was how to destroy -- to shoot -- and oh how useless the medals and titles she’d earned were as of the moment. 

       “Terrible excuses should only be made by me, doctor.” 

She’d finally answered as she got back up to her feet, patting her pants clean of the desert sand. And then she paused, the moment brown eyes met blue. Stunned into silence just because she could almost read how unimpressed the doctor must be of her help. Angela Ziegler was no damsel in distress after all. Heck, she’d most probably seen more hell than Fareeha despite the Egyptian having participated in war herself not long after joining the military. A little cut was nothing worth fussing over and yet Fareeha had done just that. 

For what? For a thank you? For the doctor’s attention?

Her gaze fell to the doctor’s ankle once more, her lips pursed into a thin line and suddenly she found it difficult to look up again.
