From the Quill

your protagonist doesn't need an enemy to be miserable. six options if the plot's gone flat:

🏵️ man vs self — the quiet one. they want two things that can't both happen and they know it and they're pretending they don't.

🏵️ man vs nature — weather, illness, a garden that won't grow. nature has no motive and that's what makes it brutal.

🏵️ man vs society — a hometown decided who they were at sixteen and filed it away as permanent.

🏵️ man vs technology — the thing built to help them quietly took over.

🏵️ man vs fate — something bigger already picked the ending. the story is what they do while they wait to find out what it is.

🏵️ man vs a group — no single villain, just a family or friend group where the dynamic itself is the problem.

Interpersonal

Chronic people-pleaser who quietly resents everyone they've pleased

Can't apologize without immediately over-explaining or justifying

Confuses control for care (over-plans other people's lives "for their own good")

Ghosts conflict instead of having the conversation

Weaponizes humor to deflect anything real

Self-perception

Preemptively self-deprecating so no one else gets the chance

Secretly competitive with people they claim to admire

Can't accept help without feeling indebted

Mistakes stubbornness for integrity

Needs to be the one who "figured it out first"

Practical/Behavioral

Hoards small grudges but forgets big ones

Terrible at endings — leaves things (relationships, jobs, books) unfinished rather than face closure

Compulsive over-preparer who panics without a plan B, C, and D

Says yes to everything, then quietly sabotages the thing they didn't want to do

Nostalgic to a fault — idealizes the past to avoid dealing with the present

Sharper/nastier ones

Enjoys being needed more than being loved

Tests people's loyalty in ways they never admit to

Generous publicly, stingy privately

Believes their own myth a little too much

1. "You don't have to talk. I'll just sit here being annoying at you instead."

2. "I'm fine." "I didn't ask."

3. "You can be furious and still let me make you tea. They're not mutually exclusive."

4. "Stop doing the thing where you smile like it's a wall."

5. "I'm not going to fix it. I'm just going to be here while it's broken."

6. "If you say 'it's not a big deal' one more time I'm going to sit on you."

7. "You don't owe me an explanation. You just looked like you needed someone to not leave."

8. "I know. You don't have to say it for it to be true."

9. *no dialogue — one character just moves their chair six inches closer, and the other lets them*

10. "You've been staring at that same page for twenty minutes." "I'm thinking." "You're not. You're doing the other thing."

11. "I'm not going anywhere, so you can stop performing 'okay' at me."

12. "Cry if you want. I won't tell anyone you're capable of it."

13. "You don't have to earn this. It's not a transaction."

14. "I'm not asking you to be fine. I'm asking you to stop pretending you are."

15. *the resistant character finally exhales — not a sob, just the breath they'd been holding — and says nothing at all*

The clichéd line: She was angry at him for forgetting her birthday.

It's not wrong, exactly. It's just inert. Nobody reading it feels anything, because you've done the feeling for them. Here are three ways out.

1. Gesture

She set his coffee down without looking at him. Too hard — it sloshed over the rim onto the counter. She didn't wipe it up.

No adjective for "angry" anywhere. The reader supplies it, which means they feel it instead of just registering it.

2. Dialogue with subtext

"You're up early," he said.

"Big day. Thought I'd get a head start on it myself."

She's not accusing him of anything. The gap between what she's saying and what she means is where the anger lives — and it's more interesting than a direct confrontation would be, because now the reader's doing the work of decoding her.

3. Displacement

He asked if she wanted to grab dinner later. She said she had plans. She did not, in fact, have plans.

The lie is the tell. You don't need to name the emotion when the character's behavior is already contradicting itself in a way only the reader can see.

The common thread: all three trust the reader to do arithmetic. "Tell" does the addition for them and hands over the sum. "Show" gives them the numbers and lets them add it up — which is where the actual emotional payoff comes from. If you find yourself reaching for a feeling-word (angry, sad, nervous), stop and ask what that feeling would actually do to a body, a voice, a room. Write that instead.

22. what you overhear through a screen door

23. something left behind at the end of the school year

24. a reunion that goes differently than expected
