Chapter 2 â Stay
Biting mornings of October brought a quiet, predictable rhythm to the western bay. The high, wire-reinforced windows now let in a pale, amber light that cut through the early fog, illuminating the dust motes that settled over the heavy rubber mats and the cold iron weights. The training had become completely predictable, a steady loop of footwork drills, close-quarters defensive maneuvers, and post-session evaluations.
But predictability inside the academy was a dangerous thing. It created a false sense of safety, a quiet space where the sharp edges of professional restraint could easily begin to blur.
For Leon, the predictability was a lifeline. He found himself anticipating these private, early morning sessions far more than the weekends, more than the rare hours of liberty where he was permitted to leave the campus grounds. The rest of the week was nothing but noiseâthe echoing shouts of the main barracks, the competitive posturing of the lower-ranked cadets, and the exhausting pressure of keeping his name at the very top of the printed ranking board. But inside this room, before the rest of the world woke up, the universe narrowed down to the sound of your steady breathing and the quiet, commanding cadence of your voice.
You quickly began to notice the little things about him. It was impossible not to, given how intensely he occupied the space around you.
He was always there exactly five minutes early, standing by the equipment lockers with his canvas bag already neatly stored away, his uniform immaculate. He never made you wait, not even once. More than that, his retention was almost unnerving; he remembered every single microscopic correction you gave him from the previous week. If you told him his weight was shifted two inches too far back on a defensive pivot on a Tuesday morning, his posture was already flawless by Thursday.
During your tactical demonstrations, you caught him unconsciously mirroring your posture. If you leaned against the edge of the metal desk with your arms crossed, your dark instructor jacket slung over one shoulder, he would shift his weight a few seconds later, his frame naturally aligning with yours as if he were trying to learn how to exist in the world simply by studying the way you held yourself.
But what truly caught your attention was his focus. Leon watched your hands constantlyâfar more than he watched the advanced tactical equipment you were demonstrating.
When you held the weighted training replica, explaining the mechanical balance of the grip, his intense blue eyes weren't fixed on the steel or the sights. They tracked the precise movement of your fingers, the way your palms turned, and the quiet, mature grace of your wrists against the dark fabric of your sleeves.
You quietly mistook it for pure, exemplary attentiveness. You figured he was simply a visual learner, a hyper-focused rookie determined to absorb the exact mechanics of a seasoned veteran. You didn't realize the truth.
You had no idea that his chest was tight because he thought your hands were beautiful, that the sight of your ink-stained fingers moving over the ledger pages or adjusting the straps of his vest was enough to make his throat go completely dry.
The dynamic between you wasn't about flirting. There were no loud, suggestive remarks, no obvious attempts to cross the lines defined by the academy's strict code of conduct. Instead, it was about something far more insidious: comfort.
The sterile, rigid boundary between instructor and cadet was slowly beginning to soften into an intuitive understanding. The sharp, brief sentences of the first few weeks gradually stretched out, filling the quiet gaps between drills. The conversations stopped revolving entirely around training parameters and performance metrics.
"You're too tense today, Kennedy," you remarked one rainy Tuesday, leaning back against the wooden bench as you watched him wrap his knuckles in fresh white cotton tape. "Your mind is somewhere else. Tell me, What do you do when you're not trying to become the academy's premier soldier? Do you actually have a pulse, or do you just run on batteries?"
Leon paused mid-wrap, his fingers freezing against the cloth. He looked up, his youthful features flushing slightly under your direct, easygoing gaze. He swallowed, looking uncomfortably down at his hands. "I... I read, ma'am. And I listen to music sometimes. When the barracks are quiet."
You tilted your head, a faint, mature amusement touching your lips. "Music. Let me guess. Squad marches? Standard aptitude audiobooks?"
"No," he muttered, a genuine, awkward sheepishness breaking through his usual stoic discipline. "Classic rock, mostly. My dad had a lot of old cassettes. CCR, the Stones... that kind of stuff."
You let out a soft, real chuckle, the sound rich and warm in the empty bay. You stepped closer, your unforced confidence casting a slight shadow over him as you looked down at his bent head. "Classic rock? I don't know, Leon. You secretly look like someone who'd have a hidden box of tapes filled with nothing but cheesy love songs. The kind of tragic, dramatic ballads where the guy spends five minutes crying in the rain."
"I don't!" he denied.
The response came entirely too quickly, his voice cracking slightly on the last syllable. His blue eyes snapped up to meet yours, wide and frantically sincere, his cheeks burning a deep, sudden crimson that gave him away instantly.
You laughed again, a playful, dominant charm in your eyes as you shook your head. "Sure you don't, Cadet. Your face tells a completely different story, but I'll let you keep your secrets."
Leon couldn't form a proper sentence after that. He simply nodded quickly, his heart hammering against his ribs as he went back to his tape, his mind violently replaying the warm, easy sound of your laughter.
The absolute imbalance of the dynamic was cementing itself deeper into the marrow of his bones; he was a boy entirely unmoored by a single smile, while you were simply enjoying the refreshing, honest company of a promising young rookie.
After training one Thursday afternoon, the damp heat of the bay was finally beginning to cool as the general campus classes let out. You stood by the central administrative desk, finalizing the weekly attendance logs, while Leon was at the far end of the room, using a heavy towel to wipe down the rubber workout mats.
The heavy double doors swung open, and another senior instructor, a seasoned drill sergeant named Vance, strolled into the bay carrying a stack of fresh supply requisitions. He stopped by your desk, his boots clicking loudly against the linoleum as he glanced across the room at Leonâs meticulous, tireless work, then back at you.
"Careful," Vance joked in a low, gravelly voice, a smirk playing on his weathered face. "Kennedyâs going to think youâve adopted him if you keep him in your bay any longer. The kid doesn't even look at the rest of the staff."
You chuckled smoothly, not even looking up from your paperwork as you signed your initials at the bottom of the ledger. Your voice carried that natural, seasoned confidence that always made the academy feel like your absolute domain.
"Wouldn't be the first cadet who needed looking after," you replied easily, your tone warm but entirely professional. "At least this one doesn't break the equipment."
Vance snorted, nodding in agreement before heading toward the back offices.
Near the weights, Leon froze completely. The heavy towel remained pressed against the textured mat, his fingers gripping the fabric until his knuckles turned white. He had regular, human hearing, and in the quiet, echoing cavern of the bay, your voice had traveled straight down the line, embedding itself directly into his chest.
Needed looking after.
You weren't just supervising him because the numbers on the ranking board dictated it. You viewed him as something worth keeping an eye on, a specific soul in a sea of identical blue uniforms who belonged under your care. The simple, offhand comment was nothing more than an instructorâs casual remark to a colleague, but to Leon, it was everything. The sheer, intoxicating warmth of it flooded his entire system, and the exhausting, brutal weight of his constant perfection vanished in an instant. His entire week was made.
Later that evening, long after the training bay had been locked and the campus had dissolved into the dark, quiet shadows of a late autumn night, Leon stood by the payphones in the main administrative courtyard. The cool air bit at his neck, but he barely felt it. He held the heavy plastic receiver to his ear, listening to the dull, rhythmic dial tone as he waited to check in with his old precinct contacts back home.
He leaned his forehead against the cold metal of the phone booth, his eyes drifting across the empty, gravel path toward the dark windows of the faculty building.
A sudden, sharp realization hit him like a physical blow. His chest tightened, a soft, breathless gasp escaping his lips as his fingers tightened around the black plastic receiver.
He was smiling.
It wasn't a tight, polite grimace meant for inspections or a small nod of acknowledgement to his peers. It was a genuine, helpless smile that tugged hard at the corners of his mouth, warming his face in the autumn chill.
And the terrifying truth was that he had been smiling for the last ten minutesâlong before he even noticed he was staring across the dark courtyard, his eyes helplessly searching for you all over again.

âYouâre home early,â Leon says with a smile. Heâs sitting on the sofa, legs propped up on the coffee table. Heâs reading, with the television on but muted in the background. âBirthday girl,â he adds, grin growing to flash his teeth.
You furrow your brows, setting your purse and keys down on the kitchen counter, kicking off your shoes. âYeah, Iâm back.âÂ
âUh-oh, whatâs wrong?â He stands up, walking across the living room, making his way toward you wearing a concerned expression on his face. âSomething happen? Are you hurt?â
You let out an amused breath. âNo, nothing like that. I justâI feel like Iâm in an episode of the Twilight Zone or something.âÂ
âHow so?âÂ
Itâs almost too embarrassing to say, and youâre at risk of breaking down into tears again if you try to put it into words. âWell, my friends and I were supposed to meet up for dinnerâŚfor my birthday, yaâ knowâŚâ
âUh-huh.â He nods, begging you to continue.Â
Your voice is already cracking, throat hoarse as you swallow down the lump rising in its walls. âI showed up andâand no one was there. I think they all forgot.â A sob breaks free from your chest, and Leon immediately rushes to your side, wrapping his arms around you, pulling you into his command. Fat, oily tears stream down your face, blotted away by the fabric of his t-shirt as you nuzzle into his chest.Â
âIâm so sorry,â he soothes, a hand coming up to cradle your head, pressing you tighter against his pec as his grip deepens.Â
âI thought we had it all planned,â you cry. âAnd that we were going to celebrate, and I donâtâI donât knowââ Another wail leaps from your throat, cutting off your inane blubbering. âIt just hurts.âÂ
âI know, I know,â he says softly, praying with all his heart that he can find the words to comfort you. No excuse, no explanation, can mollify the fact that you feel abandoned and forgotten.Â
Itâs just another day on the calendar. No, itâs your birthday and that means something to you.Â
Maybe they were all busy. Still a shitty thing to do, no matter what comes up. They could have at least let you know they wouldnât be able to make it.Â
Did you tell them the wrong date? Then heâs blaming you and thatâs no good, no good at all.
Scratch, veto, nix.
âWant cake?â Is what he lands on.
You sniffle. âWhat?âÂ
He pulls away, holding you by the flesh of your upper arms, brushing a trail of tears off your cheek with his knuckle. âCanât have a birthday without cake,â he says, so adamant and serious it makes you giggle. âIn fact,â he sings, scooting past you to open the fridge. You turn on your bare heel, watching as he pulls out a white box, bound with twine. âI have one right here.â
The smile on his face is so wide, so genuine, it fills you with an overwhelming sense of pure, unyielding affection. Tearsâhappy ones this timeâtrickle down your warm cheeks once more as you spit out a string of gratitudes and I love youâs, thanking Leon for never failing to pick you up when you fall, for always being there for you, rain or shine.Â
âHappy birthday, darling.â

Domestic Leon Kennedy has a folder on his phone titled âimportantâ that is literally just blurry pictures of you.
You scroll through them.Â
You're half asleep on the couch with your hair everywhere.
Youâre laughing so hard your eyes are closed.
Youâre standing in the kitchen wearing his shirt and making coffee.Â
You're reaching across the car to grab his hand.
Your feet are sticking out from under the blankets because you always steal them in your sleep.
You're looking out the window during a thunderstorm.
When you ask him why he keeps those ones, he almost looks offended.Â
âYou know how many times Iâve looked at those pictures after a bad day and reminded myself I had something to come home to? I'm not deleting a single one."
"At least delete the one where I look demonic and my mouth is all open."
"Sweetheart," he pauses. Looks at you. "You are demonic."
You slap him playfully on the arm, but you let him keep his pictures.

Leon - 1 new message
You had the phone in your hand already.Â
It was a photo of Buddy upside down, in a snowdrift on his back with all four legs in the air, absolutely deranged with joy.Â
Leon: no regretsÂ
You smiled at it longer than youâd ever admit.Â
You: he earned this
Leon: he earned nothing. heâs a menace.Â
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
Dani cornered you that afternoon. She shut your bedroom door with her foot and apologized for her outburst from the night before. You forgave her and you knew she wasnât going to leave your room without giving all of the details from last night. You told her what you could. You didnât tell her about the picture frames or the guns. You just told her that he apologized and that you were both on good terms now.Â
It wasnât even that hard, which surprised you.Â
âSo what are you two now?â Dani asked.Â
âI donât know.â You shrugged.Â
She looked down and grabbed your wrist. âWhere did you get this?âÂ
âHe got it for me.â You said.Â
âWas that last night?âÂ
You nodded.Â
Dani leaned in, hugging you tight. âI knew it! I knew he still liked you.âÂ
You smiled. âYeah I guess you were right.âÂ
âIâm always right.â She let you go.Â
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
December 27th
Your mother sent you across the driveway with a plate of leftovers âfor the neighbor,â like it was nothing, like your heart didnât want to jump out of your chest when his door opened. Buddy lost his mind with his claws scratching at the hardwood. Leon grabbed the plate and leaned on the door frame.Â
âThank you,â he said, smiling.
You walked back home and later that night he messaged you again.Â
Leon: tell your mom the ham was better the second day
You: careful. sheâll adopt you.Â
Leon: too lateÂ
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
December 28thÂ
You texted him good morning and nothing came back.Â
You checked again around noon and still nothing. You hated, absolutely hated that your body still knew the drill: the little check, the Delivered, all the feelings coming back up uninvited. It was like a trained reflex, and almost one good week hadnât untrained it.Â
Finally at six you heard a ding from the kitchen counter.Â
Leon: sorry. emergency vet. buddy ate a sock.Â
He sent a photo of the dog in a cone of shame and the poor thing looked utterly defeated.Â
Leon: no regrets. him or me.Â
You exhaled a laugh at the counter loud enough that your dad looked up from his phone.Â
You: is he okay?
Leon: heâs fine. thatâs a $3,000 sock nowÂ
You: aww iâm sorry. iâm glad heâs okay though!Â
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
December 29th
You: heads up. my mother is planning a new years party and i think sheâs going to invite you
Leon: iâve been briefedÂ
You: did you say yes
Leon: she brought cookies. there was no saying no
Later, another photo was sent. Buddy was asleep on the couch with his jowls smashed flat against the brown leather. You could see in the corner of the frame the Christmas tree box was leaning where youâd last seen it, still unopened.Â
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
December 30thÂ
Leon: when do you fly backÂ
You stared at the message. He hadnât asked you a question like that since July.Â
You: the 2ndÂ
Three little dots appeared and disappeared. You watched the little gray bubble do its dance.Â
Leon: okÂ
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
New Yearâs Eve at your parentsâ house was similar to Christmas but with the formality drained out of it. You wore a soft cream colored sweater with a black skirt. Your mother put the nice tablecloth away but still had an unnecessarily large spread on the table. She laid out expensive cheeses and meats with crackers. Candles were placed around with a shiny silvery decoration in the center that said Happy New Year. Confetti was sporadically placed with little disco balls and a few bottles of champagne were placed in a bucket of ice. You begged your mom that only one bottle was needed but she insisted on more.Â
âI canât believe you leave Saturday,â your mother said as she set down the tray of deviled eggs.Â
âMe neither,â you said as you took a bite of cracker with cheese on it. âAt least the next time you see me, Iâll be living here.âÂ
âI know and Iâm so thankful youâre coming back sweetheart,â she smiled and pulled you in for a quick hug.Â
You heard three knocks on the door and Ellie rushed to open it. Leon stood in the doorway with another bottle of wine.Â
He looked at you when you raised your eyebrow at it, "different kind this time, maybe youâll like this one.âÂ
Ellie screamed, âWHEREâS BUDDY?âÂ
He smiled and looked down at her, âhome. Heâs on house arrest. Sock related.âÂ
âWhatâs house arrest?â Ellie questioned sweetly.Â
âItâs when bad dogs need to stay home.âÂ
âOh,â she said with a puzzled look.Â
Your dad pulled him into the living room and handed him a beer. Your mom put a plate together for him without asking and handed it to him. Leon took it anyway. Mason pulled him into another game of Kessel, the rules changed again since last time and, as far as you could tell, changed hourly. Leon lost three hands in a row and the last one on a rule Mason invented mid-hand.Â
Later you went looking for Leonâs wine that he brought. You popped it open and poured a small amount. This time, it didnât taste like shit. So you poured a little more.Â
You pulled Leon to the kitchen to tell him you liked it.Â
âGood,â he said and briefly he looked genuinely relieved.Â
You smiled and looked at the wine bottle on the counter, âdo you want me to pour you a glass?âÂ
Leon shook his head. âNo.âÂ
âDonât you like wine?â You asked, taking a sip.Â
âNot really,â he said.Â
âWhat do you like?âÂ
He smiled. âWhiskey.âÂ
âOh,â you smiled too, taking another swig. âYou got a favorite brand?âÂ
âI used to like Wild Turkey.â He paused. âNow I usually go for Buffalo Trace.âÂ
You nodded, holding the glass to your lips.Â
Leon looked at the fridge and back to you, âyou like whiskey?âÂ
You shook your head, âno, not really.âÂ
Leon nodded and smiled at you.Â
âWhat do you like?â He asked.Â
âI like white wine if itâs casual. When Iâm at a bar I usually get a vodka soda. But if the night's going terribly Iâll drink anything.âÂ
âJust not whiskey, though,â he said, playfully nudging your shoulder.Â
âMaybe if Iâm drunk enough.â You laughed.Â
âNoted.âÂ
You were happy tonight and the way Leon was looking at you made your heart melt. Though, you wouldnât ever say that out loud.Â
Leonâs phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and you saw the finally happy expression in his face soften.Â
âGotta take this,â he said, and stepped out of the kitchen toward the dining room.
You drifted to the doorway with your wine glass and grabbed a cracker. You placed a piece of cheese and prosciutto on top of it. You took a bite and Leon was standing near the window. He had the phone to his ear and you caught pieces of the conversation over the party noise.Â
â...yeah. I know what day it is.â He laughed. â...Tell him I said thatâs a terrible idea.âÂ
Mid-sentence, his eyes came up and found you and you retreated back to the kitchen.
Leon followed you shortly after. He put his phone back in his pocket, picking up his beer like nothing had happened.Â
âGood call?â you asked.Â
âClaire.â He paused. âA friend.âÂ
âIs she the dark haired girl from the photo you showed me?âÂ
âYeah,â he nodded.Â
âWho was the guy standing next to you in that picture?âÂ
Leon huffed a laugh, âoh⌠Chris? Thatâs Claireâs brother. Known him for a long time too. Trust me, you donât wanna meet him.âÂ
You furrowed your eyebrows. âWhy not?âÂ
âBecause Claireâs the nice one.âÂ
You smiled and both of you looked down at your drinks.Â
âSo whatâs the job?â Leon asked.Â
You were a little surprised at his question but you answered, âIâm a nurse.âÂ
âWhen in March?âÂ
âThe fifteenth. But Iâll be driving back here a week before.âÂ
âYou nervous? About the move?â Â
You nodded. âA little.âÂ
âYouâll be close to your family.âÂ
âYeah,â you said. âAmong other things.â
Your conversation was interrupted when Josh shouted at the TV. Dick Clarkâs New Yearâs Rockinâ Eve came up loud in the living room. It was some mainstream pop artist mid-song on a stage in Times Square, surrounded by a horde of people who had agreed to stand in the cold for hours on end.Â
âTurn it down,â your mother shouted from the dining room and then you heard a pop from a bottle of champagne that she just opened.Â
Dani groaned. Mason, who was falling asleep on the couch, sat straight up like heâd been plugged in. And Josh knew every word of the song. You watched him sing the entire second verse into a beer bottle, and you were genuinely surprised that a man who dressed like Adam Sandler knew the lyrics by heart.Â
By eleven-thirty, everyone was in the living room surrounding the TV. Your mother handed everyone glasses full of champagne, including you and Leon. Both of you were standing in the back near the staircase and you watched Leon hold his glass without taking a single sip.Â
His arm was down at his side and yours was too, and somewhere in the last few minutes the distance between you had gotten very small. You looked up at him and found that he was already looking down at you â not at the TV, not at the room, at you â and this time you were the one who could have looked away but you didnât and neither did he.Â
Around eleven-forty Leon set the untouched champagne down on the side table. He walked over to your dad and said something quietly to him. Your dad nodded without looking away from the screen. Then he was in the entryway, taking his coat off the hook, and your mother protested:Â
âYouâre not leaving. Itâs twenty minutes till the ball drops!âÂ
âYeah.â He said sliding one arm into his coat. âBuddyâs got about that long before he takes the trash apart.âÂ
âBut youâll miss midnight!âÂ
âIâll hear it from next door.âÂ
He said it jokingly. Your mother laughed and swatted at his arm. She kept insisting on him taking a plate of food home, he declined at first but then accepted. She quickly made him a plate and he opened the door. The cold rolled in across the entryway and he glanced back at you.Â
âHappy New Year,â he said.Â
Then the door shut.Â
On the TV a man in a puffer coat was talking about the crowd size. Your mother was distributing her second round of champagne. Josh had found the confetti poppers and was arming the kids with them, which was going to be a problem in fifteen minutes. Dani was standing next to Josh with her head on his shoulder, and your dad was in his chair with Ellie asleep on him again. The whole room ticked forward toward the only moment of the night that mattered.Â
You set your glass down on the dining room table, grabbed your coat off the hook and zipped it up. You slipped your boots on and walked out onto the porch. The cold stung your face and it took the breath out of you on the first step down. Every house on the street was lit up, rooftops lined with warm white and multicolored lights. Somewhere a few blocks away, someone who couldnât wait was already sending up fireworks. Soft thuds and a bloom of gold scattered above the treeline.
The salt crunched under your boots the whole way down the driveway. You stopped at the end of it and looked toward his house. Your chest dropped to the floor. It was so stupid. You knew it was stupid to show up right now. He probably left because he wants to be left alone but yet here you were, going to look for him anyway.Â
You walked down following what looked like to be his footprints on the snow covered sidewalk. Your breath clouded out in front of you white and fast. Behind you, muffled through your parentsâ walls, was the television being turned up louder.Â
You got to his porch, the wooden steps were swept clean. The wreath was still hung on his door. You raised your hand and hesitated once before knocking.Â
Inside you could hear Buddy barking and the scrabble of his claws on the hardwood. Leonâs voice low and unbothered, âhey â heyâ and the deadbolt clicked.Â
The door opened and warmth from inside his house rolled out over you.Â
He had Buddy by the collar, with the cone still around his neck and he was holding him back with little-to-no effort. Leon was mid sentence with the dog when he looked up and saw you.Â
He stopped.Â
He stared at you with his hand on Buddyâs collar. The porch light was softly shining on his face.Â
âHey,â he said.Â
âHi.âÂ
In the distance, you could hear muffled yelling and laughing from your parentsâ house. Leon glanced to the side nodding at your parentsâ house and then back at you.Â
âYouâre gonna miss it,â he said.Â
âYou said you could hear from next door.â You paused. âI came to test it.âÂ
He let go of Buddyâs collar and stepped back from the door. He didnât say come in. He just moved out of the way and left the space where heâd been standing.
You stepped inside.Â
Buddy sniffed your legs with the plastic cone bumping into your thigh. You crouched down and he shoved what he could of his head into your hands and then he tipped over and rolled onto his back. The cone scraped the floor and his tail wagged with it making a thumping sound every time it hit the ground. There was a shaved patch on his belly, a neat pale rectangle of skin with a tidy row of sutures down the middle.Â
You scratched his chest. âGood boy.â His tail thumped harder.Â
You looked up and Leon was watching you with a look of almost contentedness. Â
Leon crouched and picked him up, cone and all. âCâmon,â he said. âBed.âÂ
He carried him down the hall to his bedroom. You heard the door click, you heard one little scratch and a whine from Buddy, and then Leonâs footsteps coming back down.
He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of whiskey out of the pantry.Â
You sauntered over to the marble-topped island.
He unscrewed the bottle open, poured some into an old-fashioned whiskey glass and he took a sip. He looked at you over the rim of the glass and then held it out.Â
âTry it.âÂ
âI told you I donât like whiskey.âÂ
âYou told me you donât like whiskey sober.âÂ
It was almost a joke. You looked at him for a second â his hair a little messy, the glass was held out over the marble like a dare â and then you took it.Â
It smelled like a campfire and tasted worse. You took a tiny sip and it burned down, the same way it did the first time you snuck it out of your dadâs cabinet when you were a teenager.Â
âGod.âÂ
Leon looked unbothered.Â
âAnd you drink this for fun?âÂ
âMhm.âÂ
You handed the glass back to him and your fingers brushed his as he grabbed it. He tipped it back and drank from the same side of the rim, where your mouth had just been.Â
You traced one of the marble veins on the counter with your pointer finger, âLeon.âÂ
âYeah.â He said, setting the glass down gently.
âThank you.â You glanced up at him.Â
He furrowed his eyebrows. âFor what?âÂ
âEverything. Painting my parents' living room, salting the driveway, Buddyâs collar.â You looked down at your wrist. âThe bracelet. All of it.âÂ
He looked at his glass, turning it slightly on the marble, âDidnât do it for a thank you.âÂ
âI know.â You waited until he looked up. âIâm saying it anyway.âÂ
He nodded once and this might have been the most uncomfortable youâd ever seen him. His jaw worked like he was hunting for something to say and coming up completely empty.Â
â...Your dadâs drivewayâs still holding,â he said finally.Â
âLeon.âÂ
âIâm just saying. He should do it again before the next freeze.âÂ
You almost laughed. Heâd rather talk about salting the driveway for the rest of his life than sit with the feeling for more than a few seconds. But you let him have it, because you understood it now. You had spent days watching him say things sideways. You could speak his language fluently at this point.Â
You traced the vein in the marble again.Â
âCan I ask you something?âÂ
âYeah.âÂ
âAre you still holding back?âÂ
His hand went still on the glass. âWhat do you mean?âÂ
He knew what you meant because youâd learned every version of his face by now, and this was him buying a few more seconds.Â
âI mean everything you said last time I was here.â Your heart was beating so hard against your chest that you were sure he could hear it across the counter. âNow that distance isnât an issue anymore. The age thing. Does that still bother you?âÂ
He looked straight at you when he answered, âYeah,â he said. âSome days.âÂ
You nodded slowly; it wasnât like you wouldâve believed the other answer.
âI donât get it.â He shook his head slowly. âYou could have anyone your own age. Hell, in twenty years Iâll be almost seventy.â He paused. âDonât you want to be with someone you could spend your whole life with?âÂ
âYou think I havenât thought about that already?âÂ
He didnât have an answer for that but you watched it land on his face. Everything since July came apart, because every version he made up in his head depended on you being a woman who hadnât thought any of it through. But you did. You weighed the pros and cons of everything at two in the morning in your apartment back east more times than you would ever admit to him.Â
âI thought about it in September,â you said. âWhen I applied for the job. I thought about it every single day you didnât answer me.âÂ
His throat bobbed.Â
âSo donât tell me what Iâm going to want in twenty years.â Your voice came out steadier than you felt. âIâve been doing the math a lot longer than you have.âÂ
He opened his mouth but was interrupted by the sound of people shouting outside. Somewhere in it you could hear Josh, and the kids, and half the street with them.Â
âTEN!âÂ
Neither of you looked away from each other.Â
âNINE! EIGHT!âÂ
He was looking at you the way he did in your parentsâ kitchen a week ago with the clasp of the bracelet between his fingers.Â
âSEVEN! SIX!â
You werenât going to do it.Â
Youâd done all of it tonight. You walked to his house. Youâd knocked. Youâd asked him the question. You were done being the one who moved first.Â
âFIVE! FOUR!â
His hand left the glass on the counter.Â
âTHREE! TWO!â
And he walked around the counter.Â
âONE!â
The whole street went crazy â party poppers, neighbors shouting, and fireworks booming up over all of it, muffled and a whole world away.Â
Leonâs hand came up under your jaw. He touched you like you were something delicate, thumb along your cheekbone and tipping your face up. He kissed you slowly. Like he was checking. Like some part of him was still standing on the other side of that counter running the numbers one last time.Â
You decided he had enough time thinking about it all and you grabbed a fistful of his shirt and pulled him in.Â
He came forward off-balance, one hand catching the edge of the counter behind you, and whatever heâd been holding onto since July left him all at once. You felt it go. His careful hand at your jaw slid back into your hair, and the second one landed on your waist and stayed, and he kissed you like a man whoâd stopped negotiating.Â
You couldnât get close enough. You were up on your toes and it wasnât enough. His mouth was warm and tasted like whiskey. You moaned softly into the kiss that youâd been thinking about for months.Â
He heard it and his hand tightened at your waist.Â
Then he broke off, pulling away barely an inch, his forehead coming down against yours, both of you breathing heavy.Â
âY/Nââ
âDonât,â you said. âDonât do the thing where you talk yourself out of it.âÂ
He huffed something that was almost a laugh, you could feel his breath against your mouth, and then his hands went to the backs of your thighs. He lifted you onto the counter like you weighed nothing at all.Â
The marble was freezing on the back of your thighs but you didnât care. He stepped in between your knees and you got both hands into his hair and pulled him back down. His hands were braced on either side of you, nowhere to go and nothing left to hide behind.
Outside, over the neighborhood, the fireworks kept going. Down the hall, Buddy was barking his head off at the noise but neither of you cared.Â
Leonâs mouth left yours to trail his lips along your jaw and the soft scrape of his stubble made you shiver. He kissed down the side of your neck, lingering where your pulse was, then opened his mouth and sucked gently. The heat of him blooming under your skin. He nibbled softly at your earlobe and his breath warm against the shell of your ear.Â
âLeonââÂ
He answered you by pulling your cream sweater off. You lifted your arms so he could pull it over your head, the soft fabric brushed against your face before it dropped somewhere behind him. His hands settled at your waist with his thumbs brushing your bare skin above your skirt before you reached for him in return. You unbuttoned his shirt one by one and pushed it off his shoulders. He stepped back only long enough to unbuckle his belt and shove his pants down, kicking them aside.Â
He moved between your legs again, leaning in until the hard length of him pressed against the thin barrier of your panties. He rolled his hips once, grinding the thick ridge of his cock against your clothed pussy. The friction drew a soft moan from your throat. He panted close against your ear.Â
He kissed between your still-covered breasts, then peppered lighter ones upwardâacross your chest, along the column of your throat, over your chinâuntil his mouth found yours again. While he kissed you he reached down and tugged your skirt over your hips, letting it slide to the floor. Your palm found the shape of him through his boxers, squeezing gently, and he moaned softly into your mouth.Â
You slipped your fingers beneath his waistband, easing the fabric down just far enough to free him. His cock sprang warm and heavy into your hand. You stroked him slowly from base to tip, feeling him twitch against your palm. He kissed you deeper in response, his tongue slid against yours, while his free hand slipped between your legs and rubbed slow circles over your still-clothed clit.Â
âTake them off,â you whispered against his mouth.Â
He pulled back just enough to look at you, a small, crooked smile tugging at the corner of his lips. âCanât wait for me, huh?âÂ
You shook your head, breath unsteady. âIâve waited long enough.âÂ
His smile softened and he hooked his fingers into the sides of your dark red panties and pulled them down your legs. Then he knelt down and his warm hands parted your legs. He pressed open-mouthed kisses up the inside of your thigh, he kept going higher until his tongue finally dragged over your exposed slit. It was soft and wet, with his stubble scratching the inside of your thighs. He licked again, then closed his lips around your sensitive bud and sucked gently while his hand wrapped around his own cock, stroking in time with the slow pull of his mouth.Â
When he looked up, his lips were glistening with his spit and your slick. He stood up, kissed you deeply so you could taste yourself on his tongue, and guided the tip of his cock into your entrance. He pushed in slowlyâinch by inchâuntil he was fully inside you. The stretch drew a long, trembling moan from your throat.Â
Leon fucked you the way he kissed you: slow, careful, every stoke deliberate. One of his hands slid underneath your bra and his palm covered your breast. He brushed his thumb over your nipple as he rolled his hips. He kissed across your chest and back to your mouth again. After a while his hand left your breast and found its way between your bodies. He had two fingers perfectly circling your clit in a steady and perfect rhythm with the thrusts of his cock.Â
The dual sensation made your head spin and it kept building until it finally broke. Your orgasm rolled through you in warm, shaking waves; you clenched around him, gasping his name. He kept moving through it, slower and deeper. The intensity of every thrust after you came made your thighs tremble.Â
âYouâre so tight,â he whispered against your mouth.Â
His rhythm grew less controlled with his hips snapping against you a little harder. When he was close he pulled out and wrapped a fist around himself. He stroked a few times more before he came across your stomach in warm white stripes. He braced himself over you afterward, you both were breathing hard, and he rested his head against yours.Â
âFuck,â he whispered.Â
You tipped your face up to kiss him and then cupped his jaw. He nuzzled into your palm, eyes half-closed.Â
You smiled. âThat was amazing.âÂ
He kissed you again with the corner of his mouth curving up. âYeah.â He laughed quietly. âIt was.âÂ
Leon peeled himself away and stood in front of you. You let your eyes travel over his broad shoulders, the dusting of hair on his chest, the curve of his abs, and the still-half-hard length of him. You could feel a fresh wave of heat in your stomach reappearing. You almost forgot how incredibly sexy he was.Â
He held out a hand. âCome on.âÂ
You grabbed his hand and slid off the counter. Your legs wobbled the second your feet touched the floor and nearly fell over. His arm wrapped around you instantly.Â
âI got you,â he said, lifting you, one arm under your knees, the other around your back. âLetâs get cleaned up.âÂ
He carried you down the short hall into his bedroom. When he opened the door Buddy scrambled across the hardwood with his tail wagging furiously.Â
âLay down,â Leon said firmly. The dog obeyed, sulking over to the dog bed in the corner and collapsing onto it.Â
Leon set you gently on the bathroom floor and reached into the large glass shower to turn the water on. His bathroom looked nice just like the rest of the house. Soft white tile, black fixtures, a vanity in the same wood as his kitchen. There was not much on his counter other than a razor and a bottle of hand soap. The shower had two shower heads and the steam began to rise almost immediately.Â
You took your bra off. He stepped under one shower head and you followed him under the other. Leon tipped his head back under the water. It cascaded down the lines of his body, tracing every muscle, and you felt your cheeks get warm all over again. You turned your face away, suddenly shy, as if the two of you hadnât been fucking only a few minutes earlier.Â
Leon laughed quietly. âDonât get all shy on me now.âÂ
He crossed the short distance between you and reached his arms around you from behind. He pressed a slow kiss to your shoulder.Â
âIâm not,â you said and you leaned back into the solid warmth of him.Â
âYouâre blushing.âÂ
âItâs just the water.âÂ
He moved a wet strand of your hair out of the way and kissed your neck. âMhm.âÂ
You closed your eyes and relaxed into him. He lightly traced his finger against the bruise on your side. âLooks like itâs healing well.âÂ
âThanks, doctor.â You smiled.Â
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
You wrapped one of his towels around yourself and padded out down the hall, leaving wet footprints on his floors, and found the kitchen the way you two had left it.Â
The whiskey glass on the counter, your clothes and his sprawled out on the floor. Your boots by the door. The plate your mother had sent home with him, foil still on, sitting untouched by the sink.Â
Your phone was on the island where youâd set it down last and you checked the time. It was 1:14 in the morning and you had four messages from Dani.Â
Dani: where did you go?Â
Dani: are you with Leon???
Dani: mom asked where you went. told her you felt sick from the champagne and went to bed.Â
Dani: iâm going to bed. love you. be safe. đÂ
You laughed softly out loud.Â
You: i love you. Iâll be back later
You: thank youÂ
You were still typing when Leonâs phone went off on the counter.
It was in the corner of your eye, face up and the screen lit up.Â
+1 (202) â 1 new messageÂ
Confirm receipt. Wheels down Dulles 1300. Briefing package to folâ
The rest of the message was cut off by the screen.Â
You stood there in your towel with your own phone in your hand. You did the math and heâd have to leave before the sun came up.
The shower was still running down the hall and you had no idea what briefing package meant. You thought about the room upstairs, the cases along the wall and the way he said he mostly still worked for the government. The water shut off and you put your phone face-down on the island, next to his. You turned around and leaned back against the counter with your arms crossed over the towel.Â
Leon walked down the hall with a towel wrapped around his hips and his hair pushed back wet.Â
âHey,â he said.Â
âHey.âÂ
He stopped a few feet into the kitchen. He was staring at you against the counter with your arms crossed. Your phone face-down on the island and his lying next to it.Â
He walked across the kitchen and picked his phone up. He looked at it and swiped the screen once. Then he set it back down on the marble, face-down.Â
âI have to leave in a few hours,â he said.Â
âOkay.âÂ
âYou can stay. If you want.â He paused. âIâd like you to stay.âÂ
He came over and put his arms around you. You stood there in his kitchen with your face against his chest and his chin on the top of your head. You both stood there for a while. The refrigerator hummed. His hand moved slowly up and down your back.Â
âCâmon,â he said into your hair. âLetâs go to bed.âÂ
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
He gave you a t-shirt and a pair of boxers out of his dresser. His shirt came halfway down your thighs and it smelled like his laundry detergent and, faintly, like him. He changed too â a plain t-shirt, boxers â you got a brief look at him, at the scars you didnât let yourself study in the shower, before he pulled the shirt down over them.
You got into his bed and so did he. He reached over and pulled you against him. You kissed him for what felt like a long time. His hand stayed at the small of your back under the shirt. At some point you ended up half on top of him, hair falling in both of your faces and him huffing a laugh into your mouth about it.Â
You kept checking the clock on the nightstand. It went from 2:04, and then 2:40.
âWhat day do you leave?â he asked.Â
You were lying with your head on his chest, listening to him say it through his ribs.Â
âThe second.âÂ
âSo Saturday.âÂ
âSaturday.âÂ
He was quiet for a second before asking, âcan you watch Buddy while Iâm gone?âÂ
You lifted your head.Â
âHeâs easy,â Leon said. âTwo walks, food in the morning and night, and his medicine twice a day.â He paused. âYouâd be doing me a favor.âÂ
You looked at him in the dark. You knew what he was actually asking. And you knew he wasnât going to say it out loud, because he never did.Â
âYeah,â you said. âOf course.âÂ
His hand flattened against your back. âThanks.âÂ
You put your head back down. âWait. Who watches him after I leave?âÂ
âNeighbor girl does it.âÂ
You lifted your head again. âNeighbor girl?â
Leon huffed a laugh, âsheâs sixteen, donât worry.âÂ
âIâm not worried.âÂ
âMhm.âÂ
âIâm not.âÂ
He kissed you on the forehead and pulled you back down against him. You could feel him laughing about it, silently, next to your ear.
You spent the little time you had left together like that. Talking, mostly. His fingers moving absently through your hair. The heat kicked on and off. Buddy was snoring in the corner.Â
Sometime after three you were almost asleep, your face was against his shoulder, his hand still moving slowly through your hair.Â
âI missed you,â he said into the dark and quiet room, like he wasnât sure whether he wanted you awake for it.Â
You opened your eyes.Â
You thought about the other day. Those three little dots appearing and disappearing while you sat on your own bed waiting for a sentence that never came. You wondered if it had been this one.Â
âI missed you too,â you said.Â
His arm tightened around you, and he pressed his mouth to the top of your head and left it there for a while.Â
âď¸âęłâ˘â *Ö´
At four he got up out of bed.Â
You lay on your side, watching him pack, and it was the worst part of the night.Â
He was quick. His bag was already half packed. He moved around the bedroom in the dark without turning on any lights, pulling things from drawers and he never once hesitated grabbing a single item. He set everything in his bag like a man who had done this five hundred times.Â
You watched him become somebody else in his own bedroom, and he wasnât even trying to.Â
He came back from the bathroom dressed. He had on a black compression shirt, dark coat, and cargo pants. He looked the way he did on your parentsâ driveway a week ago, when you almost didnât recognize him.Â
âHey,â he whispered.Â
You were sitting on the edge of his bed in his t-shirt with your knees pulled up.Â
He came over and crouched in front of you and pressed something into your hand.Â
It was a key. His house key.Â
âFor Buddy,â he said.Â
âLeonââÂ
âHis foodâs in the pantry, Iâll leave the medicine out on the counter, and the vetâs numberâs on the fridge.â He said it like a checklist. âDonât let him go upstairs.âÂ
You closed your hand around it.Â
He didnât tell you when he'd be back and you didnât ask. That was how this was going to work now and it started tonight.Â
He stood, and leaned down to kiss you. His lips pressed against yours softly and his hand cupped the side of your face.Â
âGo back to sleep,â he said.Â
But you knew you couldnât go back to sleep. Not now. You put his hoodie on over his t-shirt and you went out to the living room. You stood at the window and watched him back the Porsche out of his driveway at four-thirty in the morning.Â
The taillights went to the end of the street and turned right. Then it was just nothing but the empty snow-covered street. And you were standing in his house, in the dark, with his dog asleep in Leonâs room. His key was still in your fist and his side of the bed was still warm, on the first morning of the new year.Â
Sinking ship
You only agreed to be Leon Kennedyâs fake girlfriend for one night, help him make his ex jealous at a couples-only party, collect a nice purse as payment, and go home. But when old feelings get dragged into the open, a suspicious Chris calls your bluff, and seven minutes in heaven turns into something a lot hotter and messierâŚ

The bass from the speakers vibrated through the floorboards of Chris Redfields extravagant house as starlights crisscrossed the ceiling, casting everyone in a warm, hazy glow that made the whole thing feel a little too intimate for a random Saturday night except it was a Couples-only party, you found out when Leon had shown up at your apartment two hours earlier with that half-sheepish, half-cocky grin you knew too well, holding up a bottle of your favorite wine like a peace offering.
"Fake date. One night. My ex is gonna be there with the new guy she's been throwing in my face for weeks. I'll owe you big time." Your payment? You could pick out anything from the mall the next day, it was on him. Now here you were, playing the doting girlfriend while his ex never even glanced your way the whole night.. wow Kennedy, your plan is working out great. Half an hour later, Chris clapped him on the shoulder with a grin that didn't reach his eyes.
"Man, didn't know you were seeing someone. She's cute. How long?"
"Few months," Leon answered smoothly, thumb stroking your hip. Chris's gaze narrowed.
"Right. So how'd you two meet again? Because last time I saw you, you were bitching about being chronically single. I didn't think you'd even show up to the party.."
The air thickened. You felt Leon tense. You laughed lightly, turning to kiss Leon's jaw. If you're already here the least you could do was take advantage of the situation.
"Blind date, mutual friend set us up and what can I say.. it was love at first sight. End of story."
Chris hummed, unconvinced. "Cute story.." But there was something about his tone.. like he wasn't fully convinced.
The night wore on and still not even one look from his ex, so Leon upped the ante: a hand sliding down to squeeze your ass when he thought she was looking, a slow kiss at the corner of your mouthânever a real oneâthat left you breathless and wanting for more. The line between pretend and real blurred with every passing minute. Your skin felt too hot and you kept pressing your thighs togheter, but you had to remind yourself that this was not real, it was just a game for him, for his ego. At least you'll get a cute designer purse.
Eventually the host banged a spoon against a bottle. âAlright, degenerates! Classic rules. Seven minutes in heaven. No backing out. We're drawing couples so no one leaves heartbroken"
You fought a groan from bubbling up your throat while the circle formed. When Chris pulled the slip with both of your names,he barked out a laugh from across the room.
âPerfect timing,â he called. âYou two lovebirds need a minute to cool off anyway. Go on.â
Leonâs jaw flexed, but he played along, taking your hand and leading you into the small guest room. The door clicked shut behind you. A single lamp cast low golden light over a made bed and a closet full of coats. The lock turned, Chris had clearly decided to play enforcer. Silence stretched for three heartbeats. Then Leon exhaled a low laugh, running a hand through his hair. âWeâre busted. He knows.â
âProbably,â you agreed, pulse hammering. âSo⌠do we just stand here awkwardly for seven minutes?â Leon stepped closer. The fake-dating tension had been simmering all night, his hand on your thigh under the table, the way youâd leaned into his neck and inhaled his cologne, the heated looks neither of you had needed to fake. His eyes darkened as they dropped to your mouth.
âOr,â he said, voice rough, âwe stop pretending.â
Your back hit the door. Leon caged you there with one arm, the other tilting your chin up. The first kiss was testing. Then you parted your lips and he groaned, deepening it instantly. His tongue slid against yours, hungry, years of buried want suddenly unleashed. You fisted his shirt, pulling him flush.
âFuck, youâve been driving me crazy all night,â he growled against your mouth. His hands roamed down your sides, gripping your ass and lifting you so your legs wrapped around his waist. The hard line of his cock pressed against your core through his jeans, and you rocked into it shamelessly.
âLeonâ I thought you still liked your ex" you pant between kisses "isn't that why you invited me in the first place?"
"Fuck no,â Leon growled between hot, open-mouthed kisses along your throat
âI stopped caring about her the second you said yes. I just needed an excuse to finally have you like this.â
"Tell me to stop and I will.â His hand came up, thumb brushing your lower lip. âBut Iâm tired of pretending I donât want this.â
Your hands fumbled with his belt. He helped you, shoving his jeans down just enough to free his cock, already thick, flushed dark, already leaking at the tip. You wrapped your fingers around him and stroked once, twice. Leon hissed, hips jerking forward.
âCareful,â he warned, voice rough. He pushed your dress up to your waist and yanked your lace panties down your legs. He tucked them into his pocket with a wicked little smirk, then dropped to his knees between your spread thighs.
âLook at you,â he breathed, spreading you open with his thumbs.
âSo fucking wet for me already.â He leaned in and licked a slow, broad stripe up your center, groaning at the taste. Then he stopped teasing. His mouth sealed over your clit, sucking gently while two thick fingers pushed inside you, curling just right.Your head fell back, a broken sound escaping your throat. He ate you out like he was trying to ruin you for anyone, sucking until your thighs shook around his ears. The wet sounds filled the tiny room, obscene and perfect.âLeon...fuck, gonna come..â
He hummed against you and pumped his tongue inside you faster. You came hard, hips bucking against his face, biting your lip to keep from screaming loud enough for the whole party to hear. He didnât give you time to recover. Leon rose, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and pulled you to the edge of the couch. He rubbed the head of his cock through your slick folds, teasing your sensitive clit until you whimpered, then pushed in with one deep thrust.
âShitââ you gasped at the stretch. He was big, but you were so wet it didnât matter. He bottomed out with a low curse, forehead pressed to yours.
âBeen wanting this for so long,â he admitted, voice ragged as he started to move. Slow at first, savoring it, then harder, deeper, the couch creaking beneath you. You clung to his shoulders, nails digging in, legs locked around his waist. Every thrust dragged against that perfect spot inside you, building the pressure again impossibly fast. His hand slipped between your bodies, thumb circling your clit in tight, slick strokes.
âCome on, baby. One more. Want to feel you milking my cockâ
The words tipped you over. You came again with a sharp cry, clenching around him so hard his rhythm stuttered. Leon followed right after, burying himself deep and groaning your name as he spilled inside you, hips grinding through the last pulses.
For a minute you just stayed connected, breathing hard, his face buried in your neck when a loud knock rattled the door.
âTimeâs up!â Chris yelled, sounding way too amused.
âYou kids decent in there?â Leon huffed a laugh against your skin. He pulled out slowly and rolled his eyes, but his hand found yours, squeezing once before he unlocked the door.
âWeâre good,â he said casually as you both stepped back into the party lights, your cheeks flushed and a very obvious hickey blooming on your neck. Chris took one look at the two of you: messed-up hair, swollen lips, the way Leonâs arm stayed wrapped possessively around your waist and let out a low whistle. âYeah⌠thought so. About damn time.â
Could use a good 7 minutes with Leon đ

Interlude I â Paper Trails
The academy was a quieter place after sunset.
Not silentânever silentâbut quieter in the peculiar way only government buildings seemed capable of becoming once the day surrendered to evening. The endless bark of instructions had faded into distant echoes. Hallways that spent daylight hours flooded with cadets now held only the occasional janitorâs cart squeaking across polished linoleum or the low hum of fluorescent lights that always sounded louder after dark.
You preferred the academy like this.
There were fewer interruptions.
Fewer eager knocks on your office door asking questions that could have been answered by reading the handbook.
Fewer instructors trying to lure you into one last cup of coffee before heading home.
Just paperwork.
Stacks and stacks of paperwork.
You let out a quiet sigh as you reached for the next folder.
The administration always insisted that the Elite Advance Program maintain detailed evaluations. Every cadetâs strengths, weaknesses, projected placement, disciplinary historyâit all found its way onto your desk eventually.
Most reports blended together after enough years.
Strong marksman.
Average under pressure.
Needs confidence.
Excellent leadership potential.
The words changed. The cadets rarely did.
Your pen hovered over another evaluation before you stopped, rubbing absently at the bridge of your nose.
ââŚCoffee.â
That sounded like an excellent idea.
Your mug had gone cold nearly an hour ago. You frowned into it anyway before taking a reluctant sip.
Terrible. You made a face, then drank the rest out of stubbornness.
âYou really ought to stop doing that.â
The voice drifted lazily through your half-open office door. You looked up to find another instructor leaning against the frame, jacket slung over one shoulder.
âMy coffee?â
âDrinking it after itâs gone cold.â
âWaste not.â
âYou make it sound noble.â
âIt is noble.â
âItâs disgusting.â
You smiled faintly. âIâve survived worse.â
He laughed, stepping farther inside. âStill here?â
âYou sound surprised.â
âI am.â He glanced toward the paperwork covering your desk. âYou know these could wait until tomorrow.â
âThey could.â
âBut they wonât.â
âNo.â
He shook his head. âIâll never understand you.â
âSo Iâve been told.â
Silence settled comfortably between youânot awkward, just familiar. His eyes wandered over the folders before stopping on one name lying open near your elbow.
âKennedy again?â
You followed his gaze down to the neatly printed ledger page.
Leon S. Kennedy.
âHm?â
âThe kid.â
âWhat about him?â
âYouâve had him three months running.â
âHeâs earned it.â
âSo have others.â
âNot consistently.â
Your colleague folded his arms against his chest. âYou like him.â
You looked up, genuinely puzzled. âAs a cadet.â
âMhm.â
âHeâs disciplined.â
âSo are plenty of cadets.â
âHe listens.â You paused, setting your pen down. âHe actually listens.â
That earned another short laugh. âIâll admit, thatâs rare.â
You leaned back in your leather chair. âIt is.â
Most cadets, especially the talented ones, wanted validation more than instruction. They nodded before corrections were finished, defended mistakes you hadnât accused them of making, and routinely confused confidence with competence.
Leon never did.
If you adjusted his stance, he adjusted it. If you pointed out a flaw, he thanked you before trying again. No excuses, no wounded prideâjust quiet, unyielding determination.
It made teaching him⌠easy. Rewarding, even.
Your colleague tapped the corner of the folder. âHe works too hard.â
âI know.â
âGoing to tell him?â
âI already have.â
âAnd?â
You smiled to yourself, remembering the early morning in the tactical bay. âHe apologized.â
Your colleague barked out a laugh. âOf course he did. He apologizes for everything.â
âIâve noticed.â
âSo has he, apparently.â
âHm?â
âI pointed it out,â you said.
âAnd?â
âHe apologized again.â
The memory tugged another smile onto your face before you could stop it.
Your colleague noticed immediately. âThere it is.â
âWhat?â
âThat smile.â
âWhat smile?â
âThe one you only get when youâre talking about teaching.â
You rolled your eyes, pulling the roster closer. âDonât start.â
âIâm serious.â
âI enjoy my job.â
âYou enjoy watching cadets figure things out.â
âThatâs rather the point.â
âNo.â He pointed toward Leonâs open file. âYou enjoy that.â
You looked down again.
The photograph clipped to the inside cover showed Leon exactly as every official academy photograph did: perfect posture, straight face, intense blue eyes fixed firmly on the camera. It wasnât particularly flattering; he looked far younger in photographs than he did in personâalmost boyish. Nothing like the determined, broad-shouldered cadet who insisted on arriving before sunrise every morning.
âYou know,â your colleague continued, âI caught him on the track again this morning.â
âI know.â
âYou know?â
âI saw him.â
âHe was wearing that ridiculous weighted vest.â
âI know.â
âHeâll run himself into the ground.â
âHe wonât.â
âYou sound awfully sure.â
âI am.â
âWhat makes you so certain?â
You thought about it for a moment, then answered honestly. âBecause when someone tells him to stop⌠he stops.â
Not immediately. Not happily. But he listened. That matteredâit was a surprisingly rare quality in a room full of arrogant rookies.
Your colleague pushed himself away from the doorframe. âWell. Iâm heading home. You should try it sometime.â
âI will.â
âLiar.â
ââŚProbably.â
He laughed all the way down the quiet hallway, his footsteps fading into the distance.
The office fell quiet again.
Your attention drifted back toward the folder still lying open before you.
Leon S. Kennedy. Top overall evaluation. Highest academic average. Highest practical assessment. Perfect attendance.
You frowned slightly. Perfect attendance.
You flipped through another few pages. Additional practice hours. Voluntary conditioning. Supplementary coursework.
He really did spend an absurd amount of time at the academy. Too much, honestly.
You found yourself remembering the way heâd looked that morning in the bay. Hair damp with sweat, breathing hard, still snapping instantly to attention the moment heâd noticed you. As though physical exhaustion were something he needed to apologize for.
ââŚEarnest boy,â you murmured to the empty office.
The words disappeared into the quiet shadows. You picked up your fountain pen again.
The Elite Advance roster still waited. Administration preferred instructors to rotate assignments whenever possible; there was practical logic behind exposing recruits to different teaching styles, perspectives, and mentors.
Your pen hovered above the page. One name was all it required.
You considered two other cadetsâboth top marks, capable, and promising.
Then, almost absentmindedly, your pen lowered to the fresh paper.
Leon S. Kennedy.
The ink flowed smoothly across the page. You stared at the name for another second before closing the ledger with a dull, satisfying thud.
Not favoritismâsimply practicality. He absorbed instruction better than most. He challenged himself without challenging your authority. Teaching him never felt like dragging someone uphill; it felt like walking beside someone who was already climbing.
You switched off the desk lamp, letting the office slip into twilight.
Gathering your coat, you headed toward the door, pausing only long enough to glance once through the glass window overlooking the now-empty training grounds. Everything stood still beneath the amber glow of the floodlights.
Tomorrow morning, long before dawn broke over the academy⌠you had a feeling one cadet would already be out there.
You shook your head with a quiet, amused exhale.
âDonât wear yourself out, Kennedy.â
The hallway swallowed your footsteps as you turned the corner, carrying the thought no further.
You never noticed that, somewhere between paperwork, cold coffee, and a name written almost absentmindedly across a roster, Leon Kennedy had become the only cadet you could recall without looking at his file.
And you certainly didnât notice that you had smiled twice while thinking about him.

The parking lot had almost emptied by the time the last camper climbed into their parents' car. The laughter that had filled every corner of the camp for weeks had faded into the distance, leaving behind nothing but the soft rustle of the trees and the gentle ripple of the lake against the shore. Decorations had been taken down, cabin doors stood open, waiting for another summer. The place felt strangely quiet, as if it were taking one long breath before falling asleep for the year.
You stood beside Leon's car, fingers intertwined with his. Neither of you had been in a hurry to let go. His thumb traced absent-minded circles over the back of your hand while the afternoon breeze carried the scent of pine and the lingering smoke from last night's bonfire. It was peaceful.
You look towards the lake one last time. It was hard to believe that only two months ago you had arrived here carrying nothing but a suitcase and a heart convinced that good things never lasted. Now you were leaving with something infinitely heavier. Someone.

The last full day of camp always felt different, like the entire place had realized its time was running out. The usual chaos was still there, only it had changed its shape. Instead of racing towards the lake after breakfast or arguing over whose turn it was to clean the arts and crafts cabin, campers hurried between cabins with half-zipped duffel bags dragging behind them. Clothes hung over shoulders, sleeping bags were rolled with questionable effort, and someone, somewhere, was already insisting they had definitely packed their phone charger despite it being found under another bunk five minutes later.
Every path seemed busier than usual, every laugh carried just a little more urgency. The cabins that had been overflowing with life only days ago already looked strangely bare. Posters had disappeared from the walls, blankets were folded at the foot of empty bunks, the little trinkets campers had collected throughout the summer (friendship bracelets, painted rocks, silly trophies won during games...) were slowly disappearing into backpacks. Outside, you had started dismantling the camp one decoration at a time. The colorful banners stretched between trees came down first. Then, the handmade signs pointing towards the dining hall leaned against the maintenance shed, waiting to be stored until next summer. Even the strings of fairy lights were waiting to be wrapped around the pavilion one last time that night before going back to their safe place for another year.

The morning sun had barely climbed above the pine trees when the last of the breakfast trays was stacked away. The smell of toasted bread and coffee still lingered in the air as campers gradually drifted towards the open clearing at the center of the camp, chatting excitedly amongst themselves. Some carried half-finished cups of juice; others were still trying to wake up, rubbing sleep from their eyes as they found places to sit on the weathered logs arranged in a circle. You leaned against one of the tables beside Leon, absently sipping from your water bottle while watching Carlos unsuccessfully attempt to steal a piece of fruit from Claire's breakfast plate before she smacked his hand away without even looking up. Some things never changed.
At the front of the clearing, Chris clapped his hands together, the sharp sound cutting through the chatter almost instantly. "Alright, everyone! Eyes up here." The conversations slowly died down, replaced by dozens of expectant faces turning towards him. Jill folded her arms with an amused smile while Claire stepped beside Chris, carrying a rolled-up map of the camp. Carlos leaned lazily against a nearby fence, already looking far too entertained by whatever Chris was about to announce.

Chapter Index
Chapter 1 - Gold Star
The mid-September air inside the academyâs main building was always thick with the sharp, industrial tang of floor wax, stale black coffee, and the heavy canvas scent of issued gear bags. It was a loud, echoey corridor, a labyrinth of polished linoleum and exposed brick that reverberated with the relentless thud of heavy leather boots. Every month, the atmosphere changed. Every month, it grew heavier, suffocatingly competitive, condensing into a dense crowd right outside the administrative office where the glass-encased wooden bulletin board hung.
Leon S. Kennedy had been at the academy for months now, long enough to know the exact cadence of its anxieties. He didn't push through the crowd. He stood at the periphery, his large canvas gear bag slung over one shoulder, its worn strap biting into the stiff fabric of his regulation uniform. The cuffs of his blue shirt were slightly frayed at the edges, a testament to the hours spent scrubbing them down after late-night drills, but the creases along his trousers were sharp enough to cut. Around him, the lower-ranked cadets muttered in low, envious tones, their eyes darting toward him before returning to the fresh ink on the printed sheets beneath the glass.
To the rest of the academy, Leon was a prodigyâan untouchable, hyper-focused anomaly. Everyone believed he worked this hard because he wanted the best placement after graduation, a flawless record to hand over to a prestigious metropolitan precinct.
Nobody noticed that immediately after his eyes found the top spot on the ranking board, he didn't look at the career track metrics or the commendation stamps. Instead, his gaze would subtly shift, drifting past the crowded corridor, out the high windows, and toward one specific, isolated training ground on the western wing of the campus.
You.
The academy whispered about you constantly. To the junior classes, you were the Elite Advance Program instructorâa title spoken with an almost reverent caution. Some cadets thought you were intimidating, a stoic force who moved through the barracks with an unforced, commanding grace. Others thought you were flatly impossible to impress, possessing too much aura and a seasoned sharpness that could dissect a rookieâs mistake in a single glance. Everyone, from the drill sergeants to the raw recruits, agreed on one thing: only the best cadet survived your program.
Leon never corrected them. If they wanted to believe he was obsessed with first place because of his career, let them. Good. It was an excellent shield.
The truth was far more embarrassing, a quiet weight he carried behind his ribs. He had memorized your training schedule months ago, tracing the clean, typewriter-printed fonts on the faculty boards until the hours were burned into his mind. He subconsciously timed his morning runs so he would pass the eastern training block exactly when you were walking in. He never broke his stride, never called out, and never attempted to strike up a conversation. He just needed to see youâto catch the casual way your instructor jacket hung over one shoulder, or the focused, mature tilt of your head as you reviewed the dayâs ledgers. He would never, under any circumstance, admit that to a soul.
The sun hadn't even cleared the horizon when Leon found himself alone in the western tactical bay. The room smelled of old rubber mats, iron weights, and dust motes trapped in the dim, pre-dawn shadows. Sweat clung to his forehead, his knuckles wrapped tightly in heavy cotton tape as he drove another relentless, exhausted combination into the heavy striking bag. His breath came in ragged, heavy pants, the dull thud-thud-thud of his fists echoing against the high ceiling.
He didn't hear the side door click open.
You hadn't walked in to check on him. You weren't paying special attention to the academy's golden boy; you were simply arriving early to beat the heat of the day, a ceramic mug of black coffee cradled in your hand. But the rhythmic, punishing sound drawn from the dark corner of the bay drew your eyes. You stood by the threshold, taking in the sight of the lone cadet pushing his body to the absolute limit while the rest of the campus was still asleep. Simply because nobody else was ever there that early, your steps naturally redirected toward him.
"You know, Kennedy," your voice cut through the damp quiet, smooth and balanced with a mature, easygoing amusement. "The heavy bag isn't going to fight back. And regular class doesn't even start for another two hours."
Leon froze mid-pivot. His hands dropped instantly, his chest heaving as he snapped around to face you. His blue eyes went wide, reflecting the faint morning light, his entire frame locking into a disciplined, slightly rigid stance. "Ms. Instructor. Iâapologies, ma'am. I didn't hear you come in."
You stepped closer, your unforced confidence filling the space between you as you took a slow sip from your mug. You set a small paper bag containing a generic breakfast pastry down on the wooden bench beside his gear. "Relax, Leon. I'm not writing you up for excessive dedication. But you look like you're trying to kill yourself before the workday even starts. Eat something. And drink some water before you pass out on my mats."
Leon spoke very little. His throat felt incredibly dry, his voice caught somewhere behind his teeth as he gave a tight, earnest nod. "Yes, ma'am. Thank you."
"Don't mention it. See you at nine, Cadet," you said with a faint, playful charm, turning on your heel to walk toward the administrative offices.
Leon stood entirely still, watching your retreating figure until the heavy double doors clicked shut. Internally, his brain had already locked down, replaying every single sentence, the exact cadence of your voice, and the casual, effortless way you had spoken his name, looping it over and over like a worn cassette tape.
Meanwhile, you walked down the quiet, sunlit corridor, the interaction already drifting to the back of your mind. You took another sip of your coffee, a faint, passing thought crossing your consciousness: Heâs cute. Earnest. Heâs going to make a fine officer someday if he stops trying to kill himself before twenty-five.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
The profound, agonizing imbalance of the story began right there, in the quiet grit of the morning air. One heart was already helplessly, obsessively invested, while the other hadn't even realized the first page had turned.
Late that evening, the academy had fallen into a deep, heavy silence. The high-ceilinged administrative office was illuminated only by the warm, amber glow of a single desk lamp, casting long shadows across the wood-paneled walls. You sat back in your leather chair, a low sigh escaping your lips as you massaged the tension from your temples. A stack of coffee-stained folders lay open before you, the ink-printed names of the advanced cadets blurring together after hours of review.
You pulled the master roster for next month's Elite Advance Program toward the center of the desk. The administrative board expected you to rotate the assignments, to spread the seasoned oversight among the varying high-tier rookies.
You picked up your heavy fountain pen, your fingers hovering over the blank primary slot. Without much thoughtânot out of favoritism, but out of a simple, practical appreciation for a student who didn't waste your time with arrogant bravadoâyou let the nib meet the paper.
In a clean, decisive script, you wrote one singular name.
Leon S. Kennedy.
You closed the ledger with a dull, echoing thud, entirely unaware that the simple ink on that page had just anchored his entire world for another thirty days.
