“[‘It’s What You Value’] all came about because a friend of mine [Jim Keltner] had this, we did this tour [the Dark Horse Tour, 1974] and everybody got paid really well on the tour, and there’s this friend of mine who — I was trying to get him to play on this tour, he wouldn’t do it, and I really needed him to play: 'Come on, come on, please play.' And he’s saying… finally I bugged him to death until he agreed to play, and he said, ‘Okay, but, look, I don’t want to be paid for the tour but I’m sick of driving that old Volkswagen bus.’ And I said, ‘Oh, well, okay, maybe I’ll get you a car.’ So we got him a car, a Mercedes 450 and then some of the other people I heard later said, ‘How come he got a motor car, I only got…,’ you know… It was one of them.
