HI! HERE WERE MY TWO CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE OMORI FRIEND FACTS ( @friend-facts ) MAP PROJECT!!! (which you can watch here... please do... please...)
this project means the world to me... i met so many awesome people through it and getting to see it all come together truly was a treat....... i definitely cried a lot at the end it was a phenomenal experience hehe... thank you so much for having me!!!! i've included some of my process below the cut too hehe now that the project is over so i can show off what i did!!!!
first of all i saw a lot of people in the live chat that liked ace's 3d look (THANK YOU <3) but im here to out myself as a FRAUD!!! HES NOT A REAL 3D MODEL I HAVE TRIED BEFORE BLENDER FRUSTRATES ME TOO MUCH...
here's his lil sketch first of all!!
i sketched out his animation in procreate first before i rendered him in ibispaint,,,, where i do my CHEATING TRICK
then i drew out each frame linelessly. i decided to stay more or less as accurate as possible to his ingame palette... fun fact!! i actually didn't realise the space pirates had... long sleeves... somehow... until doing this project...?! i had always just assumed they had short sleeves, for some reason, but looking closer... yup... those sleeves sure are long... FAKE OMORI FAN HERE who runs a blog for obscure facts about the game but doesn't even know what the space pirates look like. humiliating...
AND THEN RENDER!!1 this is the first render and i cleaned him up since then, hehe... shiny gold coin to anyone who can spot all the stray pixels i caught before sending him through!
the trick for this (if you wanna do something like it yourself and also suck at blender) is that i actually have every individual part of him split up into many, many different layers. some things will require more or less than you think which is why you'll have to experiment with the render a couple times... for example, his pistol and tail are a couple different parts, and the shading on his shorts are also a different layer, but his head is (mostly) one solid object... same with his torso!! only one of his arms is separate from it
thennnn i just go in and mess about with the relief filter hehe... i used a purple here for the environment colour so he looked. uh. headspacey,,,??? and after THAT i go in and do some rendering and editing myself to clean it up!!! andddd then we're done... rinse and repeat for the next couple frames... and that's ace!!
NOW FOR MARI... i put a LOT of thought into this one because of a) how deeply i love mari omori and b) how much i love the mari is home sequence specifically and so i was deadset on doing it justice as best i could!!! i was so honoured to get to be a main cast artist hehe
FIRST OF ALL!!! MY ORIGINAL STUDY SHEET FOR HER!!! i was trying to get a feel for what i wanted to do, and what artistic liberties would be acceptable without destroying the vibe and point of mari is home. here that is....

a couple things i was struggling with... the lighting for one! i wanted the lighting to feel natural and not jarring, but... i also wanted it to feel jarring and... unnatural... um...
so the issue with mari is home is that mari doesn't have a night sprite, and so she ends up defying the lighting of the room shes in. im almost certain that's intentional for a multitude of reasons (general vibe + many of mari's different forms do that a LOT) but that meant i was tasked with striking the right balance between maintaining that and making her look like she was. well. that the piece looked good KJDJJKSJDK
i struggle to draw characters completely from behind, but the mods approved doing an angle like this so i was fiddling with that a little here. YOU'LL ALSO NOTICE THE GRAND "RULE OF COOL EYE" INNER STRUGGLE I HAD HERE
yeah i wanted to give her a cool weird scary eye because that's mari's thing... id go into it a little more but i already wrote all of that on the sheet. in the end i decided against it because... as cool as it is, logically it had no place on this specific variant of her and felt like it directly defied the point of mari is home to me
in the end, i ended up with this final sketch!! i decided to just lineboil for her, since again, part of the point to me felt associated with how static she is... only moving to turn further away from you when you try to get a look...
anddddd my rough colour block!!! i have a lot more wip images for this entry since i was, again, very hyper focused on doing her justice... this was my eventual solution for the lighting issue!!! to do something like this, where the lighting of the room kinda goes through the middle, but you can still see the edges of the original colours
andddd some rendering wips... looking back on this you can DEFINITELY tell its a little old and unfinished atp HEHE <3 said lovingly... its very june-cleg-art-core you can tell
eventually i decided to tint the colours a little so she fit in the environment just a tad more. see its tricky because as i said, her defying the lighting is part of the point, but the message of the area is... mari IS home... and now she's gone... i felt it was symbolically fitting to have her match her environment justtt a little because, well, she IS the environment... shes meant to stand out but also fit in at the same time and AUGHHH it was so tricky!!!
HOWEVER near the end, very last second i thought it would be REALLY cool if i gave her a lil vhs effect... its a thing ive been doing in my spookier works for a while and since i was selected to draw her based on those, i thought it would be neat, as well as fitting for the variant of mari she is... childhood memories... sigh..... mariiii... :(((
heres what that looked like early on. i muddled with the colours and cleaned her up of course....
...AND TADA!! THE FINAL
so what i did to get from the earlier application of the effect to here was honestly just play with colours a lot... namely the hue, saturation and brightness. honestly, THAT really made it! i felt the initial values of the piece without filters were a little weak, and this really helped strengthen em and bring them out!! i also ADORE all the little neons that ended up coming out... AAA... theyre so cool...
youll notice theres bits of colour and whatnot poking out at certain parts, and i'll actually say thats entirely intentional!!! i removed the background manually with the eraser tool, and initially i was going to clean it up completely, but i ended up... REALLY liking how messy it felt as the parts that jutted out shifted between each frame, so i kept some of that in!!!
and VOILA!! those were my friend facts contributions and how i made them <3 please check out the project if you haven't already!!! so many talented people worked on it and its probably the best thing ive seen come out of this community in the five years ive been in it!!
