These frogs grow up to 45-53 mm (1.7-2 in) as females and as the smaller males between 36-39 mm (1.4-1.9 in). Their habitat, which they are named after, is the Bale Mountains National Park, Ethiopia. They are listed as an endangered species due to habitat loss. You can help protect these and other endangered species by donating here.

Their natural habitat is in the lower tropical forests and montane cloud forests in Limón Provience (Costa Rica) and adjacent parts of Panama, as well as Columbia and Ecuador. These frogs are unusual because they are part of a family (Hemiphractidae) whose babies, instead of undergoing the classic tadpole-to-frog cycle, directly grow as froglets in the brood pouch of the female Frog. They are critically endangered due to habitat loss and a disease (chytridiomycosis) caused by an invasive kind of fungi (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis).
