You Got The Love and Your Love: Deep House Classic
You Got The Love was my ‘gateway drug’, my path into Deep House and electronic music as a whole. I still think of it as Deep House, even if the rest of the world doesn't. Extrapolating further, it was this record that set me on a course to start writing about music, DJing and later exploring the nightlife centred around my favourite genres of music. Although, it always comes back to listening to the music and feeling the emotions it brings. Today, as much as ever. I'm unashamed to call this record, appreciated by so many, as the record that changed my life!
Over the years, it has been covered by Florence and the machine (remixed by Jamie XX), Mamacita and others!
Electric Chair saved my life
A Manchester basement party in the 90s and 2000s with an amazing atmosphere.
Luke Una met fellow Yorkshireman Justin Crawford in Manchester in the 1980s. In 1995, they formed the Unabombers DJ duo and started the Electric Chair club night. The Electric Chair ran from the mid 1990s until 2008 and it was very influential musically, both in Manchester and in the UK as a whole. I was lucky to catch the final few years in person at the Music Box.
Luke and Justin weren’t the best DJs technically, but they played the best records. They came from a culture of musical open-mindedness and somehow made very disparate records fit together. Be it Soul to Techno. Some people complained they were crowd pleasers and played the same record too often. However, they were crowd pleasers because they made obscure records their own. The atmosphere at the Electric Chair was unrivaled. The night was built on the music that Luke and Justin played as residents and they brought many of their heroes to play at the club. Everyone from Larry Heard to Lindstrøm played in their Manchester basement. And they ended the party whilst still on a high in 2008.
Watch Theresa Hill's Rare Interview With Moodymann
Watch Theresa Hill's rare sit-down interview with house legend and label owner Moodymann. They talk about Detroit's dance music history, Prince, and more. One highlight of their conversation is when they talk about the Electrifying Mojo and how influential he was in helping Prince's career in the early days. Their exchange is an inside look at one other part of Detroit's music legacy that threatens to become lost.
Hill has spent the past four decades as a fan, DJ, and documenter of the dance scene in Detroit. As a frequent guest on terrestrial radio, she can be heard co-hosting The Old School House Party on Mix 92.3, as well as championing underground global talent on her own T Hill Detroit radio show. Beyond the airwaves, as a co-founder and producer of the annual Charivari Detroit Music Festival, Hill continues to be a driving force in preserving and elevating the city’s rich electronic music heritage. Hit the link to lock into a masterclass on Detroit music history from two individuals who lived it.
Fantastic interview with Moodymann by T Hill Detroit Radio
Basement Jaxx Deep House Latin House
Basement Jaxx ruled the '90s underground with their fusion of House, Latin and Ragga. Samba Magic and Fly Life were their biggest hits, before they signed to XL and went stratospheric with Red Alert, Rendez-Vu and Jump N' Shout!

Moodymann Detroit KDJ Deep House Legend
No one does it like Moodymann!
Larry Heard Deep House Legend
Larry Heard is a Deep House legend.
He made Can U Feel It that basically invented Deep House. At the same time, he made Acid House bangers like Washing Machine.
Through his career, he has continued to make classics like The Sun Can't Compare.
In 2003, he played in Sheffield and his DJ set blew my mind.

My Favourite Reissues of 2016
There’s been a hell of a lot of reissues in 2016. Many of them were pointless ‘deluxe’ (unnecessarily expensive) versions of albums that were already easily available. We can blame the monster that ‘Record Store Day’ became for starting this, but many others have joined in the unnecessary reissue game. You have to question really how valid many of these are in the post-discogs age, when an original pressing (or previous reissue) in available at the click of a button. Or a rummage in a thrift/charity shop/market stall. Who needs a carbon copy of an old record? Creative reissues please! Other reissue labels seem to aim to make a quick Euro out of whatever’s currently fashionable before moving onto the next trend (Surinam Funk anyone?), whilst others focus on releasing music of poor taste under the excuse of it being ‘Balearic’.
All that said, the three releases below, were very deserving of a reissue. The Dip In The Pool single is impossible to find, as it was only released on a Hong Kong promo in 1989. Barbara Mason’s You Better Stop It has not been on a 7” since the original outing in 1969. Manuel Gottsching’s E2:E4 may still be relatively easily available according to discogs, but most of those copies are bootlegs. This official 35 years anniversary pressing does something to redress the balance!
Dip In The Pool - On Retinae - Music From Memory
Enthralling late 80s Japanese pop rescued by Amsterdam’s MFM.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Barbara Mason - You Better Stop It - Athens Of The North
Heart wrenching late 60s soul.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Manuel Gottsching - E2-E4 – MG.ART
A blissed out and ever mutating early 80s composition that helped to shape the development of electronic music.
Listen/Interview/Discogs
3 amazing reissues of 2016. Still enjoying all of these in 2026!

Vinyl Discoveries of 2016
Barcelona is not famous for record shops like Berlin or Manchester. But the city does have some great music on sale, if you know where to look. Barcelona’s vinyl offering has been buoyed in recent years by records becoming trendy again worldwide. New record shops and stalls at markets seem to be popping up all the time now, after a few barren years when only the strongest survived. I gave vinyl buyers a helping hand by starting the Barcelona Vinyl Guide. Check it here. There are a number of new shop profiles on the way.
Vinyl collecting has never been about buying expensive or rare records for me. It’s always been about getting amazing records, regardless of their availability or value in monetary terms. The whole of my Top 10 of Vinyl Discoveries cost me all of 24 Euros, and many of them were found for 1 or 2 Euros. These records were mostly sourced from trendy ‘flea’ markets, record fairs, metro stations etc, in and around Barcelona. A couple were even picked on a trip to Valencia, a city which proved to be a relaxing counterpart to Barcelona’s at times frenzied way of life (at least by Spanish standards).
This 10 represents some of the most interesting records I picked up this year. 80s jazzy pop sounded unexpectedly refreshing, which brought me to Anna Domino and Isabelle Antena, among others. I found some brilliant old Catalan records this year. This was in part helped by Vinilissim, as well as lots of good old fashioned digging in shops. I found some very different but brilliant Latin records, from Frankie Ruiz’s ‘hot’ salsa, to Wara’s mystical psyche and Les Maxel’s summery grooves. The other two in this chart were an uplifting mid 80s New Jersey effort from Wayne Johnson and a powerful old Dillinja record that I’d never heard until this year. I also picked up some other great records along way the way (and lots of rubbish).
Anna Domino - Anna Domino - Grabaciones Accidentales
Beautiful jazz influenced 80s pop.
Listen/Discogs
Enric Barbat – Quatre - Philips
A really surprising find. Early 80s experimental electronic grooves from Catalonia with prog overtones.
Listen/Discogs
N'Gai N'Gai – Sunglasses - Blau
Disco influenced new wave jazz rock from 1986. Released on Joan Bibiloni’s Blau imprint. In Catalan with English title and refrain. Thanks to Ultra Local Records for the tip. Vinyl sourced elsewhere.
Listen/Discogs
Frankie Ruiz - Mas Grande Que Nunca - TH Rodven
Magical late 80s salsa from the late Frankie Ruiz. Puerto Rican pressing. Muy caliente!
Listen/Discogs
Enric Hernaez – Set PM – Fonomusic
Mid 80s earnest pop with jazzy and funk overtones from Barcelona. Killer cut is the brass assisted Aquesta Ciutat. Red Vinyl. Sealed.
Listen/Discogs
Wara - Quimsa/Hichhanigua Hikjatata – Lyra
Impressive 70s Bolivian Psyche. Strong melodies, wind sounds and mystical vibes.
Listen/Discogs
Wayne Johnson - The Power Of Love - Sure Sound
The Power Of Love is real. Fantastic mid 80s New Jersey grooves.
Listen/Discogs
Capone - Soldier / Massive – Hard Leaders
Catchy G-Funk flexing mid 90s D&B from Dillinja. Sourced on a trip to Valencia.
Listen/Discogs
Isabelle Antena – En Cavale - Grabaciones Accidentales
Isabelle of Antena fame. Camino de Sol might have been the big Balearic track, but this album is fantastic. Not sure what’s she’s doing on the cover, though!
Listen/Discogs
Les Maxel’s - Le Retour De Toto - Disques Debs International
Uplifting colourful music from Guadeloupe.
Listen/Discogs
My favourite vinyl discoveries of 2016. I still love all of them!
My Favourite Singles of 2016
In our current age of digital releases and limited vinyl pressings, there seems to be a never ending onslaught of new music. It’s impossible to keep up with everything! But it has never been easier to digest high volumes of new music digitally. I listened to a lot of terrible new releases in 2016, but also found some brilliant new stuff. It was mostly dancefloor orientated music that caught my ear this year, despite not spending that much time dancing!
Carla dal Forno - Fast Moving Cars - Blackest Ever Black
Haunting booze soaked darkness.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Mr Fingers – Aether - Alleviated
The master returned to remind us just how emotive House music can be.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Villalobos – Alterverwalter - Raum…Musik
Villalobos at his boldest with a fantastic guitar assisted winner.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Mark Seven - Never Leave - World Building
Retro futurist prime time business. Satisfaction guaranteed.
Listen/Review/Discogs
JMII – Thrills - Hivern Discs
This kicks more dancefloor ass than the limited 10”s or the velvet covered Quentin release.
Listen/Review/Discogs
San Laurentino – First Love EP – Aficionado
A hopelessly romantic EP. We need more music like this in an age of such darkness.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Willow – Workshop 23 – Workshop
Understated bumping grooves. It pays to listen closely.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Maayan Nidam - Looking Through A Glassy Mind - Perlon
Circling keyed hypnotic stuff.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Spacetravel - Time To Wake Up EP - Melliflow
An energetic outerplanetary winner.
Listen/Review/Discogs
Ricardo Villalobos & Argenis Brito - Amnesia - Melisma Limited
An unforgettable track about forgetting what you’ve forgotten!
Listen/Review/Discogs
What I was listening to in 2016!
