Breeding at seaworld is not such an important natural behaviour that it would be detrimental to the orcas health and well being of they did not breed. Recently it hasn’t been natural anyways, most calves are the product of AI, Kasatka doesn’t even live on the same continent as Kshamenk so how is Makanis conception a ~natural~ behaviour? And 3 of the natural pregnancies the have occurred recently are inbred (Nalani, Adan, Vicky) so don’t tell me that’s natural. Mothers don’t mate with their sons in the wild.

Seaworlds orca are also not bred on a normal schedule-they are, or WERE, often bred significantly younger than is average in the wild with shorter intervals between births than average.

So there was nothing really ~natural~ about their breeding program in the first place.

If you want to criticize lack of natural behaviours, why don’t you criticize the other unnatural things captive orca deal with? I’ve seen procaps criticize anticaps for supporting seaworld new decision, saying that it’s hypocritical that we are disgusted by unnatural pod structures, calf separations, etc. and not the end of breeding. But are you not just as bad for turning a blind eye to the things we have been against for years and suddenly becoming angry at the end of breeding (probably because you get something out of it, baby shamus)?

Hypocrites, everywhere.

Breeding at seaworld is just as unnatural as not breeding, and there are far more important natural behaviours that have been lost, taken away or are not accessible to captives that are far more important than being impregnated with a tube at 8, or mating with your uncle and ultimately rejecting the calves…

Scientists have a few theories as to why wild killer whales, also called orcas, don’t attack people. One is that they’re exceptionally picky eaters. Regional pods tend to hunt one type of food exclusively, whether it’s salmon or sea lions. But humans are roughly the same size as some sea lions, and are still able to dive near orcas without incident. Some people think that the orcas’ aversion to people might even be cultural, similar to a taboo or unspoken rule.
