buzzy cohan: a museum storage room full of artifacts.
nikki had always been good at finding her way into place she wasn't supposed to be. it was something her mother found charming, when she was alive, and something her father found irritating, when he was around. now, she didn't have to worry about disappointing anyone with her choice to see if the storage door was unlocked. it was. she couldn't help but to think that some custodian with a large ring of keys was going to be in a lot of trouble when she got caught in the room with all the packed artifacts in it. she wasn't stupid. she wouldn't touch any of them. but the thrill of being in a restricted place and the knowledge that she was surrounded by history was enough to give her a small burst of endorphins. she heard the door open again behind her not too long after entering, but she didn't turn, instead studying a box of something very big as her hands found her waist to rest on. 'can you believe all of this was made by people?' nikki called over her shoulder, still not looking to see who had discovered her trespass. 'no ones fucking creative, anymore. we used to build castles. now all we have are six starbucks on every block of the city. it sucks,' @warplanet.

cynthia hardy: you're more than what he did to you.
it didn't take much to break her, these days. sometimes she cried so often that her eyes burned, water so far gone from the ducts at the corners of her lashes that she was mostly heaving in breaths instead of actually sobbing. she thought she was doing better, given the circumstances. but cynthia's words cut down into a place past her skin, tucked behind a heart that was still too big for its spot in her chest, and her eyes well as if she hadn't been trying to hold herself together. 'i am only what he did to me. that's all that's left. because this sure as hell isn't me, anymore,' the shell of herself, maybe, but certainly not the nikki freeman who was going to be a novelist and show her father exactly who she was. quick hand reached up to brush away tears, though they simply kept coming. 'i'm fucked up. i'm going to be fucked up forever, and it's his fault. i know that. but that doesn't change the fact that my life is still over,' @runeread.
HALLOWEEN 2025 COUNTDOWN: SMILE (3/31)
i think when nikki's mom died, her dad just collapsed into himself. i think his wife was the most important thing to him in the world, and i think he didn't know how to be a dad ( and honestly, i think he never wanted a kid in the first place, and especially not a daughter ). he didn't know how to raise her, so after he fell into the bottle and basically let nikki take care of herself until she was 18, he left her without a word, moved away to a different state, and hasn't reached out in five years. he never realized that nikki loved her mom more than anything and how she was affected, because she lost a mom and a dad, he just lost a wife.

companion.
dialogue prompts from companion (2025).
we see the world, but we don’t really see the world, you know?
we're all just stumbling around, directionless.
goddamn. that was smooth.
i was having the most wonderful dream.
what road is this? it's not showing up on the gps.
i think we might have different opinions of the meaning of the word 'cabin'.
you know you can't lie to me. tell me what's wrong.
i'm gonna do something stupid. i'm gonna say something stupid.
they're gonna hate me. they already hate me.
i'm good. i'm drunk.
smile. act happy.
when did you know that ____ was the one?
my hands are not clean, my friend.
you're so fearless. it's inspiring.
talk me through it. what happened?
it was self-defense. ____ was going to kill me.
there's no delicate way to say this, so i'm just gonna rip the band-aid right off.
this must be a lot to process.
we can get through this. we can go back home.
i don't like surprises. this was not part of the plan.
who's to say what makes people do bad things?
i'm so sorry you had to hear that.
i've never orchestrated a murder before. it's fucking hard.
carrying this huge gun is making me really horny.
it may have never happened, but my memory of it is real.
you know i would never hurt you, right?
do you feel how much i love you?
don't make this any harder than it needs to be.
it's really hard to come back from something like that.
i'm done here. you can clean up this mess yourself.
i really didn't think you had it in you.
you think your life is worth more than ____'s?
i have the strangest feeling we've met before.
why would you make something like that up?
the world's a fucked up place. you'll get used to it.
it feels like pain. it's angry and violent and bright.
you're lying. [name] would never do that to me.
just remember to smile and act happy.
that's not gonna work on me anymore. i'm free.
we both know it's not loaded.
look at that: my very first lie. kinda fun. i see the appeal.
why did you come back here?
you take another step, and i'll shoot you.
your days of controlling me are over.
from this moment on, i control my own actions.
you are nothing to me.
you won't kill me. you love me too much.
say it. i don't care if it's a lie.

theo bennett: you need never be alone again. i will keep you safe.
the definition of safety is no longer one nikki knows. there were times even in her past that safety evaded her, but now it was completely gone, taken with it her confidence and some of her sanity. theo had always been kind. he'd never made her uncomfortable ( on accident or otherwise ), he was a gentleman in every sense of the word. he took care of her then, and he was taking care of her now. the difference was that she was more of a burden currently than she ever had been, before. 'you shouldn't have to keep me save,' nikki murmurs after a moment, running a hand through long, black locks. 'you shouldn't even have me here, theo. if anyone found out you were literally harboring a fugitive, i . . .' she couldn't live with herself. she could barely do it now. 'you're good at keeping me safe, so let me do it for you, just once. don't let me stay,' but she wouldn't walk out on her own if he decided she was worth the risk. @studiodrafts.

addison blackwood: doing little has never agreed with me. it gives me too much time to dwell on things.
she was the same, once. before her life had been taken away from her without her consent. always moving, always needing to keep her hands busy. now she found herself squatting in houses, taking odd, under the table jobs just to get a bite to eat or a dingy motel room for one night. she didn't get to move around, but her body still yearned to. that part of her was envious of addison, because despite what she'd been through, she still chose to do more. nikki didn't feel as if she had that luxury, anymore. 'ever tried sitting on your hands?' the teasing tone fell short, but nikki still gave addison a small smile. 'i get it. sitting around doing nothing is really fucking hard, sometimes. find myself doing it more and more, these days . . .' @starsmourn.
