first of all: merpeople have a lot a variety, both culturally and anatomically, depending on where in the ocean they live. this is just what its like where stede is.
"where stede is" being a settlement atop a seamount around 200m deep. they are sedentary -- seamounts are so ecologically diverse that leaving is unnecessary -- but they interact with other societies quite a bit through trading and such.

there is no masculine and feminine (i will get into it more later, but for now just know that they are hermaphroditic). instead, everything revolves around the balance between give and take, finding the middle ground where they cancel each other out. their idea of god is a being who has found such a perfect balance that they are undetectable; think of how noise-cancelling headphones work -- playing the opposite frequency of the sound around you, making it cancel out completely -- thats the ideal.
"give and take" is further broken down into traits. hunting/nesting, cultivating/distributing, fighting/resolving.
children are evaluated from the moment they are born until they are eligible to work to determine which trait they best represent, and are then assigned to it from then on out. ideally, theres an equal amount of people in each category (and if the numbers are too skewed, they have no qualms pushing people where they need them to go). each trait has multiple jobs they can fulfill, but its expected that you stay within that category. later, when finding a mate, you are supposed to find someone from the opposite trait -- again: balance.
it extends to their government, too, of course. there are six leaders, one representing the pinnacle of one of the traits. they all have advisors and such, but decisions are made by the leaders.
^ stedes father is the Hunter, and has been (not at all subtly) pushing stede to become the next one. stede doesnt really fit any of the traits, though; he is always too much of something.
anatomy
merpeople have a lot more variety than humans when it comes to features, size, body type, etc. in the region and depth stede lives, higher body fat is pretty standard.
technically, merpeople shouldnt have hair, but i refuse to imagine bald stede so they have lots of fine, thin fins on their head in place of hair. im gonna bullshit rq and say that this developed as a way to attract sea creatures -- both as food and as a mutual relationship where they keep it all clean by eating the nutrients they need. they can control the “hair” somewhat, like puffing up to intimidate or in cultural ceremonies, or lay them more flat if they need to prioritize speed.
^ i like to think about stede trying to court ed and making his “hair” extra poofy so as to impress him (it works).
^^ also, longer “hair” is common. u can change up the length of stedes however youd like.
^^^ (plenty of features are actually developed for speed, but this doesnt change much about stedes face -- his nose, for example, is already streamlined in a way that i think would be considered a beauty standard among merpeople.)
tail color also matters a lot here. red lights fades very quickly underwater, followed by orange, then yellow, then green, blue and violet. most merpeople where stede is from would have grey, white, or black tails with some green, blue, or violet accents (whether natural or modified). some even have red because it just looks black.
^ stedes orange/gold tail wouldnt be considered flashy, but it would be considered ugly due to the beauty standards favoring colors that appear crisper and less muddied than orange does at that depth. this is where some of stedes insecurity comes from
they dont have lungs, and mouths are only for eating, so language is pretty different. theyre like whales in that they have a specialized voice box, but unless theyre really trying, its not nearly as loud. their language is a combination of that, clicking of gills, and a whole of gestures and facial expressions.

reproductive anatomy!!! merpeople being a weird sort of mix between mammals and fish -- almost ovoviviparity but not quite? because everyone has the capability to carry the young, who carries is pretty much solely determined by convenience and who they decide is better fit to carry. they have a pouch that can carry eggs, and can extend/retract whatever is necessary for internal fertilization. then each egg is either fertilized or absorbed for nutrients. the fertilized eggs develop a bit (about 3-5 months), then theyre laid and taken care of until they hatch a month or two later. usually one 1-3 eggs actually complete the whole process.
^ does this matter? no. but i meant it when i said that i love world-building. and that means ovoviviparity.
self-expression
clothing? not really a thing. there are some meant for major cultural events, but otherwise its just not done. the drag it causes and the risks that can come from it getting caught or covering up gills is too high.
jewelry, however! yes! kinda ironic for a species thought of as half-fish, but piercings everywhere! in their “hair,” in their face, in all of their fins. you might think “oh but wouldnt that get caught and/or interfere with their swimming?” and the answer is. yeah kinda. but if it rips the fin, fins can heal and grow back just fine. and the jewelry they use isnt heavy enough to cause a noticeable difference in their swimming (and if it is, its just for cultural events or parties). bracelets, necklaces, waist beads, rings, etc etc. yes to all of them.
tattoos arent really a thing because they require going to the surface, but they also arent unheard of. but the main form of body modification is scarification, both on skin and on their tails. pretty much every merperson (where stede is from) has at least one piece done, usually of a symbol thats important to the community to signify ones place in it.
there are also ways to dye fins and even scales, kind of walking the line between hair dye and tattoos. sometimes its because scale color has changed with age and they want to restore it, other times its just that they want a cool design or new color. it can be permanent or temporary.
^ i like to play around with all of this a lot. maybe stedes scar looks like an anchor (maybe an anchor is the lighthouse parallel here. it could mean stability but it could also be holding something back). and what if he dyes his little butt heart so that it blends in. :(
transforming??
merpeople can transform both into humans and into fish, but where stede is from, its essentially forbidden. once again, its because of the whole thing with balance.
whenever a story has this, though, i always wonder where everything goes when they change? like, i get that its magic, but still. anyway, my expanation here is that, yes, its magic, but matter is reused as much as it can be, and whatever excess there is forms a physical object that must be kept in order to turn back. sort of like a selkies skin, yknow.
^ i think when stede changes into his human form, the excess matter takes the form of the whale paperweight :)
do humans know????
another thing ive always thought about is like. if merpeople were to exist, how tf would we not know about them? my explanation here is that the idea of merpeople is sort of like the kraken. irl we know that colossal squids exist, but weve only found 29, the majority of which were dead and not entire specimens, and the first ever picture of a living one was only taken in 2005. so reports of the kraken can now be written off as just colossal squid sightings that were exaggerated, but you can also argue that theyre actually separate creatures and that the relatively recent discovery of colossal squids despite their size opens the door for the existence of a kraken.
anyway, all that to say: in this universe, i imagine that the modern mythos around merpeople is the essentially the same. maybe some almost similar creature was found, or maybe even remnants of a very-deep-sea merperson was found but not fully discovered. so while it isnt uncommon to find people that believe a merperson-like creature exists, the existence of merpeople is still mostly denied.
^ you can decide where on this spectrum ed is, i like to play around with it :P
from the merperson side, they def know about humans at least somewhat. most of what they know comes from far away observations, centuries-old naval battles, wrecks of ships and research devices, and the general impact humans are having on the environment. specifics tho probably change based on society, and none of them really trust humans enough to learn more. they do have lots of stories about humans though, its just that the accuracy is. debatable.
^ i think the cliche of “mermaid curious about human world” plays out with stede, but probably more like how stede is curious about piracy in canon. he thinks that what hes been told about humans is correct (specifically the violence and cruelty and so on), and he thinks that he can help in some way. or maybe its even that hes just curious about them as a species, the same way a human might be about insects -- everybody thinks theyre gross but, for whatever reason, some people will feel a kinship to them and want to learn more about them in compassion.
