Giggles and warm smiles, sunlight peeking through the blinds into the kitchen casting a warmth over the lovers. This was what he looked forward to, what he found himself chasing after in the back of his mind— even while patrolling as the protector of the city. He sighs, eyes half lidded as he stares down at the girl who grins up bashfully, blue eyes sparkly and her face casted on a soft pink glow from the setting sun.

This was what he wished for. What he wanted.

“Leaving again,” Her voice echoes throughout the apartment, there’s a pout in her tone as she asks. Her brows knitting together for a moment as she looks at his figure by the door. Ah, he’d hoped she were still in bed but it seemed that wasn’t the case. The look on his face is guilt, brown eyes struggling to hold her longing gaze. Gosh, it hurt to leave her.

He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, the words “I’ll be back,” echoing in his head, as if taunting him. “I promise.” Follows after, his own voice bouncing off the walls of his skull and when he opens his eyes, he finds it rather difficult to take in. Ash clings to his hands, the promise ring on his digit dirtied by the debris. It’s cold. He sighs through his nose as his chest pangs with a feeling he wished he didn’t know the name of. Before him stands a building, all too familiar —one he wished he didn’t recognize —half gone, crumbling down and sending vibrations on the level of an earthquake throughout the city’s grounds. A rift ripping through it, fabric of time, slicing through the building. The sole reason it’s falling apart before him now.
