What are some of your favorite things? Family time, lunching with my girlfriends, Snickers blizzards, exploring new towns, shopping until I drop and traveling. 

What did you frame with us? A print that my husband and I purchased while on our honeymoon. 

Why is it special to you? My husband and I went to Greece for two weeks on our honeymoon. We spent time in Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. We both fell in love with Mykonos- especially the town. We purchased a piece of art from a local gallery so that we could take a little slice of heaven home with us. The print hangs in our bedroom in the Georgetown frame. It’s clean, classic and really makes the blue and pink tones pop!

What are you excited to frame next? We plan on selecting a few of our favorite prints from our wedding. It's time to get this accomplished as our one year anniversary approaches next month.

As you might imagine, we style and photograph spaces all. the. time. Beautiful styling plays an important role in showcasing beautifully framed pieces, because it shows how they give life to spaces. It's a really fun part of what we do here at Framebridge, but it's harder than you might expect!

So, we thought we’d share some tips and tricks we've picked up along the way on how to get your #shelfie game on point. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our trial-and-error styling process. 

Our first try: We loved the arrangement of the objects on the shelf, but this one didn’t feel right because the blue blanket clashed with the other blues in the scene. Something about the heaviness of the chair seemed to throw the balance off a bit, too. All in all, things were just looking a little heavy on the right side.

Our second try: We swapped it for this black and white one. (Which is actually a scarf. Hint: scarves work really well as accents in your decor!) This looked better, but we still didn’t feel like it was “there.”

Third time’s a charm. This one was our winner. Isn’t she pretty?! Swapping the chair for a stool duo, and the frame for the scarf helped to lighten up the right side. We realized in this case less was more.

Here are some tips for striking just the right note:

1. Balance: With our first two attempts the right side felt too heavy with the hanging frame and chair. Try to keep things similar in weight to ensure that no single object is dominating the scene. 

2. Vary textures and sizes: Incorporate a mix of books and decorative objects to keep things interesting. Play around with grouping objects together, stacking books, and placing frames in different areas. 

3. Something green: A small little succulent, an aloe plant, or cute little bouquet of flowers provides the perfect natural punch for your display. 

4. Something fun: In this arrangement we included our dog and human model forms. We had a lot of fun moving them around in different positions, and dressing them up with jewelry.

5. Instagram Minis: Shelfies are the perfect home for your Insta Minis. Lean them in different little nooks throughout your shelf to keep some rhythm in your display. 

6. Step back: Working up close only gives you part of the picture. When in doubt, take a few steps back to get some perspective. Or, try snapping a photo to diagnose what isn’t working. (We do this all the time! Sometimes it’s easier to see what’s missing in a photo than it is in real life.)

Who? Alexandra Sklar

Where’s home? I live along the coast in beautiful (and foggy) Pacifica, CA. 

What do you do? After years as a corporate buyer, I now run my own merchandising agency (The Merchant Home), where we provide product sourcing, assortment strategy, and art/creative direction to a select group of design-oriented retailers. Every day is different, and I’m fortunate I get to spend my time searching for beautiful, truly special items to bring into stores.

What are some of your favorite things? My family, of course! As well as heading to the beach, painting, learning to garden, and generally dabbling in creative pursuits. My eldest daughter is almost three and I am really enjoying starting to do little “projects” with her (jewelry-making, planting flowers, cooking, etc). 

What did you frame with us?

I framed two original watercolors I painted for my youngest daughter’s nursery- I started with a technical drawing done on my drafting board, layered that with watercolor, and then played around with a gold leaf application for the first time. 

Why is it special to you?

After a long hiatus from making art, painting these was my first step back into painting, and there is a special feel attached to these pieces because of it. For each of my girls, I wanted to make art for their first room that they could take with them. For my older daughter, I resist-dyed a huge wall hanging that is still in her room. The new baby’s room is much smaller (and more charming!), so I wanted to make her something that was more appropriate in scale but equally as special because of the technique.

I chose the Marin frame, I loved the simplicity of it, and it was a modern, well-designed style I knew I could not find in-person at a frame shop. I sent special instructions to the Framebridge team to float the art over the mat, so that the beautiful deckled edge of the paper was still visible, and they did it just perfectly. It is so professionally done, and looks incredibly custom. My husband and I joked that it looks so adult, we need to upgrade the rest of the house.

What are you excited to frame next?

I have some incredible, dreamy photographic prints that I purchased from a street vendor last time I was on a sourcing trip in Paris. Right now I just have them tacked up on my wall with copper tacks, but now I’m thinking they need to be framed. I also have a marriage certificate from our wedding that is still rolled up in a mailing tube- it has our vows and the signature of every guest from our wedding on it. That should probably be my next priority!

This dreamy photo has us singing Florence + the Machine and dreaming of all rose gold everything. The antiqued silver of our Newport frame and the bluish tones in the print make it a treat to style. We’ve mixed and matched rose gold and bronze tones for a thrift store vintage look, but also threw in a fluffy throw and a marble topped side table for a hint of glamour. It’s feeds like Lauren’s that inspired us to start the #frameyourfreed movement.

We love any opportunity to knock the dust off old pieces and really make them shine. So, this project was a real treat for us. We worked with our friends over at Move Loot to curate and frame a selection of vintage pieces. The best part? We’re giving them all away. From the Move Loot team: “The minute we saw this vintage 1946 movie advertisement, we knew it was the perfect piece for this project. We went very tropical when styling this piece. It’s a perfect place to sip a Mai Tai and watch Ginger dance straight through Happy Hour.”

The dust has settled from New York Fashion Week and we’ve all been brought back down to reality. So, we thought this would be the perfect moment to remind you that all the wonderful looks you saw on the runways should inspire both your closets and your walls.

Here are a few of our ideas for how to translate all those oh-so-fabulous trends into your home decor.

The Trend: Back to Basics

Designers stuck with muted palettes like white, black, beige, and taupe. This clean and casual ensemble from Michael Kors turned our thoughts to our Clean Collection: a mix of modern, minimalist frames perfect for ensuring a sleek silhouette to mix and match with any accent.

Get the Look:  Select a collection of neutral pieces and pair them with our clean, sleek gallery frames.

The Trend: Soft Fabrics

There was no shortage of thin lace, chiffon, and very thin cotton. Designs felt soft and natural to enhance and highlight the figure like we see in this airy Ralph Lauren design. This aesthetic translates perfectly to float mounting.

Designers featured cuts that highlighted shape and form, like this feminine ensemble from Tory Burch which showcases the model’s curves with clean lines and a tight cut, accented by a wrapping feather design.

The Trend: Chic and Classic

High waisted trousers and feminine blouses. Hallelujah. We couldn’t be more excited that designers have validated the classic closet staple for another season. This look from Derek Lam exudes chic simplicity.

We were thrilled to return this season as the Official Framer of the New York Affordable Art Fair. While we were there, we got a sneak peek at the art and framing trends that will be emerging over the coming months. Here are a few of our favorite looks and how you can get them!

Step 1: Trace and Cut

Carefully trace your frames onto kraft paper (or newspaper). Cut them out- be sure to label them so you know what’s what!

Step 2: Lay It Out

Play with your frame layout until you find something that works for you and your space. Don’t be afraid to try different arrangements!

Step 3: Hang Templates

Hang your templates up according to the layout you want. Make sure to use removable tape so you don’t damage your walls. (Blue painter’s tape works really well for this.)

Step 4: Hang Frames

Nail your hanging hardware. (Note: If your piece has hanging wire, nail your hardware according to the distance from the top of the frame to the center of the wire when pulled taught.)

Step 5: Enjoy!

Finally, a long overdue ode to our most recent framing obsession: wallpaper. Forget any preconceived notions you may have. Wallpaper is your friend. (Especially for all you renters out there!) Where’s home? New York City

What do you do? I work in the financial services industry during the day and am a photographer on the nights and weekend. I’ve had my photography business now for 8 years. 

What are some of your favorite things? Entertaining friends/family, and traveling  to New England coastal towns and the Fingerlakes region in the fall. I also have a newfound passion for interior design and am having so much fun trying to figure out my style and adding special touches to our NYC apartment. 

What did you frame with us? 

An Instagram image from my recent trip to Paris with my husband, and an image from a road trip along the northern California coastline.

Why are these pieces special to you?

Something about roman numerals runs a theme in my relationship with my husband - the first gift he gave me was a silver necklace with roman numeral clock on it. I returned the favor a few years later with a special pair of similar cuff links. His wedding band also has the same design on it, and so it continues. Paris is one of our favorite vacation destinations, and this clock at the Musee d’Orsay echoes that visual theme of roman numerals and is a reminder of all of our wonderful memories there. The frame is hanging just above our bar cart in the living room - perfectly complementing the other pieces in our gallery wall collection and the bar cart. Plus, the print has a bit of a nod to the old adage ‘it’s five o’clock somewhere’ and fits nicely next to the barware.

The beach scene at sunset was truly a chase to ‘find the light’. I had heard about this black sand beach a long time ago and it had always been on my bucket list to visit and photograph. We took a road trip from Seattle to Napa a few years ago, and as the afternoon turned into evening, we decided no matter what we would try to get to the tucked away beach before sunset. Little did we know the roads to get there were fairly remote and winding, and I am one to get carsick on such rides. A grueling 1.5 hours after getting off the main road, and this amazing scene opens up to us - not a single person on the beach, and the most perfect golden hour light possible. It was a magical site and I feel lucky we were able to witness that sunset in that location. The frame is hanging on the wall opposite the bar cart above a painted chest of drawers. It is a favorite little corner of mine where I display little souvenirs from our travels.

What are you excited to frame next?

Earlier this year my husband and I took a long-awaited trip to India so he could meet my extended family and see the country where my parents grew up. It was an amazing, colorful trip and I was able to capture some great moments and scenes. I would love to frame some of those images next!

Last night's Emmy's red carpet was full of design inspiration—classic silhouettes with heavy metal details, rich jewel tones and yellows, strong suiting for men and women, lots and lots of rich textures. We’re always looking for new sources of inspiration so today we’re sharing a few of our favorites looks re-imagined as framed art. Kerry always looks so beautiful and ladylike, even when she's rocking something a little harder, like this glam chainmail Marc Jacobs piece. We love that Kiernan is a risk taker when it comes to fashion. This dress, which could read as saccharine-sweet in a different context, is funked up over a pair of black pants and pumps. We love Lisa Golightly's "Yellow Beach Girl" (we even have it hanging in our office!) and would typically show it in a clean, modern frame, but today we’re pairing it with our Newport antiqued silver frame in honor of Kiernan's Dior look.

This geometric Naeem Khan look is so fresh and interesting, but still has a fun vintage, Missoni-inspired vibe. We love how Michelle Armas's "Zap Zap" pairs the same earthy and bright tones together, and are all about the fact that it looks a little dressed up in our Richmond antiqued gold frame.
