Who was the true antagonist of TADC in the end? Yeah, the characters sometimes rub off of each other but that's your standard conflict. Who is the Big Bad Force that the main characters are fighting against throughout the whole show? If Jax is the 'main character' that makes him the protagonist and therefore not the antagonist. If that's the case then wouldn't that make Pomni (Or Ragatha, or even Zooble if you stretch) the antagonist? Since this is a 'character driven' show, then it's not a man vs self conflict. Yes, the characters have wounds and hang ups to overcome but that is not at the center of things, that's a character arc. I'm trying to come up with the antagonistic force. It can't have been Caine, he isn't a credible villain and isn't really actively working against the main cast. Conflicts don't happen every time he appears outside of Zooble saying they don't want to go on adventures. If anything, the cast goes along with it and has gone along with it for a long time. What are his intentions for the crew? Outside of make adventures it's unclear if he has any imo. If it's programmed in, are they truly his own? He's not some rogue AI. People are still scanned into the Circus and are very much alive IRL. And how does Caine mirror the group? He is as insecure as the rest of them. I'd like to try and argue that the true antagonist was the world, the Digital Circus itself. This is a man vs nature story without realizing or intending to be.
