From an album of photographs taken during the Second Anglo Boer war. While the war raged a group of tourists visited the outskirts of the battle fields, drank cocktails, visited the races, swam in the sea and rode the fairground rides. Girls in nightdresses in the garden. C.1890s. The Black Isle, Scotland. Yes, this is the most terrifying image in my collection. It’s from the same set of 200 half plate glass negatives as the pervious post. When I scanned and then inverted it I had the shock of my life! The girl in the bottom left looks very… striking. At first I though maybe she was deathly ill. But I have images of her later in life. I love how experimental it is for the time. How personal. Child on swing with ghost like mother. C.1890s. Black Isle, Scotland. Around 10 years ago I came across an increase collection of 200 half plate glass negatives in an antique shop in Scotland. At first they looked like pretty standard stuff, but the more I scanned the more I uncovered. They were all taken by one family over around 20 years. They are playful and at times experimental. Here the mother moves to keep the child steady, or is she doing it on purpose to try and disappear in the image? Taking off her hat and coat. C.1900 approx. Found glass negative. All taken on me plate. These series photographs are always rather interesting, almost like a mini movie. You often see people taking off their hat and coat as it’s an easy movement to make when out and about. In line with my pervious post, I think this is the sort of thing you might have taken at the seaside or at a fair. Scarborough, UK c.1890 approx. I love being able to see the set up of the tourist photo studio set up on the beach. You can also see the line of other tourist arts too s on the right inc. another camera. It’s a bit like this is so far from its original intention - to make it look like the child is on a donkey with boats behind etc. it’s a simplified version of it. Found slide 1960s. A bit of ancient humour for your Wednesday. Humour in found photography reminds us that we are similar to the people of the past. It feels more powerful the older the image. The magenta slides. C.1960s. Different brands of slides are deteriorating faster than others. This whole set has lost many of its colour layers and we’re left with mostly magenta. These were taken at a similar time to my previous post and the contrast is striking. I’ve found that sometimes this deterioration can actually make something interesting out of an image which might otherwise have been a pretty standard. They also remind us of the fragility of these images over time. How long till the magenta layer fades on all the slides taken on this make of film? All the images will be lost. Which then asks a bigger question, why where they taken in the first place? Found slides. C.1960s. I found these slides recently in a lot of photography bits and bobs all bundled together at auction. It’s always like finding treasure in lots like this… most of the photographs are ones I’ve seen time and time again. But amongst all the dinners, and standing next to monuments are these moments that seem to have slipped through some how. Beautiful, odd, full of atmosphere. These slides also have the most intense contrast! Hastings pier on fire. c.1900s. Real photo postcard. Now we live in St Leonard’s on Sea, I’ve found a few photographs of the local area which show the drama of that’s happened around the now quiet streets. I love the action of this, the women running on the left adds to the drama… a real paused moment.
