I started with compact cameras and point-and-shoots because while riding a motorcycle, I needed equipment that was small and not too expensive. When I started teaching dentistry courses, I bought a Nikon FM and a 100mm macro lens to document clinical cases. That was my first experience with a larger camera, and it completely changed the way I saw photography. From that moment on, I generally used longer lenses, and that 100mm permanently shaped the way I see. Today, my favorite lenses are the 50mm F2, the 56mm F1.2, and, for travel, the 35mm F2, along with Fujifilm mirrorless cameras.

What makes photography important to you today? (philosophy)

Photography has always been an outlet for me, a way to cope with problems. Unfortunately, my second son was born with respiratory failure and a very difficult prognosis. I remember documenting everything we went through with a compact digital camera, and the act of photographing kept me focused on the happy ending I wanted for that sequence, helping me support my whole family.

Obviously, the ending was exactly as I imagined it. Today, my son is 22 years old!

That is how photography has been throughout my life. I went from documentary photography to street photography and motorcycles.

Today, I always carry a camera with me, whether it's my Fuji or a Kodak Pixpro FZ, which is just like the ones I used 25 years ago, for everyday life. Besides publishing some of the photos I take with the Kodak, I keep most of them stored on memory cards, like albums that we will be able to look back on in the future to remember our lives.

I reached a turning point in the way I photographed while doing documentary photography. Unfortunately, I couldn't bear showing problems without seeing them resolved, and after living it firsthand during my son's birth, I left documentary photography and started making portraits, showing people in an epic way. The world of motorcycles and street photography was exactly what I liked, and it fitted perfectly! Later, I added motorcycle travel photography, and that's how I found what truly inspires me and makes me happy.

Photography bags and backpacks are generally unattractive or they obviously look like "camera bags." Besides drawing attention and becoming a security risk, they don't fit with my everyday life because there's no way to make them look good with the clothes I usually wear. Back then, I always ended up adapting regular shoulder bags for photography, but they never really did the job.

Twelve years ago, while walking through a camera store in New York, I saw the ONA Bowery on a shelf. I bought it, and there was no going back! Besides keeping my camera within easy reach and everything organized, it's beautiful, perfect for everyday life, and it doesn't look like a camera bag to other people. I own almost every model! The only thing I'm missing is one of ONA's backpacks, which I'll definitely buy on my next trip.

Personally, I like everything I use to avoid shouting the brand. I prefer little or no visible branding. I like everything I use to be consistent with the way I dress, and that's exactly what ONA is for me. It's my everyday bag. It goes well with everything, and people usually say, "What a beautiful bag, where is it from?" It attracts attention, but it doesn't shout.

When riding my motorcycle, it's extremely practical, especially the Prince Street. I carry everything I need, the weight rests on the motorcycle's passenger seat, and the cross-body strap keeps it securely in place. Whenever I need to take a photo, I simply swing the bag to the front and have quick access in just a few seconds.

What's NEXT for your career, your art, and your passion? (anything upcoming? Seasonal trends, shows, travel, area of study, area of teaching, industry evolution, topics of interest)

Before answering, I should mention that I'm a dentist, and today, with the digital revolution, being a dentist is incredibly exciting. That means I divide my time between constantly improving in both disciplines, and fortunately they have a lot in common.

In photography, especially in my case since it isn't my profession, the greatest challenge is continuing to improve without being influenced by social media. Of course, adapting to change without losing my own personality and vision.

I don't really have an average day. Since I work independently, I organize my schedule as I go. I usually work at my dental office from Tuesday to Thursday. Since I live in Buenos Aires, a beautiful city, and I take public transportation to my office, I always carry a camera because there are always opportunities for street photography.

After work, I either go out on my motorcycle for a coffee or take my dogs for a walk, always with an ONA bag and my camera.

And when I travel, whether by motorcycle or by car, well that's a story for another article.

Comencé con cámaras compactas y point-and-shoot, porque al andar en moto necesitaba un equipo pequeño y no muy caro. Cuando comencé a dar cursos de odontología, compré una Nikon FM y un 100 mm macro para documentar los casos clínicos. Ese fue mi primer contacto con una cámara grande, que me cambió por completo la visión. Desde ese momento, en general uso lentes largos, y ese 100 mm me marcó para siempre la forma de ver. Hoy mis lentes favoritos son el 50 mm F2, el 56 mm F1.2 y, para viajar, un 35 mm F2, junto con cámaras sin espejo Fujifilm.

¿Qué hace que la fotografía sea importante para vos hoy? (Filosofía)

La fotografía siempre fue para mí un cable de descarga, una forma de apoyo para enfrentar los problemas. Lamentablemente, mi segundo hijo nació con insuficiencia respiratoria y un pronóstico complejo. Recuerdo que, con una cámara digital compacta, fui documentando todo lo que vivimos, y ese acto de fotografiar me enfocaba en el final feliz que quería para esa secuencia, y así poder apoyar a toda la familia.

Obviamente, el final fue como lo pensé: ¡mi hijo hoy tiene 22 años!

Hoy llevo siempre una cámara conmigo, ya sea la Fuji o una Kodak Pixpro FZ, que es igualita a las que usaba hace 25 años, para la vida de todos los días. Las fotos con la Kodak, además de publicar algunas, en su mayor parte las guardo en tarjetas de memoria, como álbumes que vamos a poder ver en el futuro para recordar nuestra vida.

Tuve un punto de quiebre en mi forma de fotografiar cuando hacía fotografía documental. Lamentablemente, no podía soportar mostrar una realidad sin poder ver que las cosas se resolvieran y, al vivirlo en persona con el nacimiento de mi hijo, dejé la fotografía documental y comencé a hacer retratos, mostrando a las personas de una forma épica. El mundo de las motos y la fotografía de calle eran justo lo que me gustaba y encajaban perfecto. Después incorporé la fotografía de viaje en moto y así encontré lo que me apasiona y me hace bien.

¿Por qué elegiste un bolso ONA y cómo impactó esa decisión en tu trabajo?

Los bolsos y mochilas para fotografía, en general, son feos o son demasiado "de fotografía", lo que hace que, además de ser un riesgo por llamar la atención, no pueda alinearlos con mi actividad de todos los días, ya que no hay forma de hacerlos ver bien con la ropa que uso habitualmente. En esa época terminaba adaptando bolsos de vestir para fotografía, pero nunca terminaban de cumplir la función.

Hace 12 años, caminando por una casa de fotografía de Nueva York, vi en un estante el ONA Bowery. Me lo compré y fue un camino de ida. Además de tener la cámara a mano y todo ordenado, es súper lindo, va muy bien para la vida cotidiana y no parece un bolso de fotografía a los ojos de la gente. ¡Tengo casi todos los modelos! Me falta solo una mochila de ONA, que seguramente adquiriré en el próximo viaje.

¿Cómo acompaña tu bolso ONA tu imagen personal?

En lo personal, me gusta que todo lo que uso no grite la marca, que no tenga branding a la vista o que sea mínimo. Que tenga coherencia con la forma en que visto, y eso es ONA para mí. Es mi bolso de todos los días. Va en armonía con todo y, generalmente, la gente dice: "¡Qué lindo bolso! ¿De dónde es?". Llama la atención, pero no grita.

Para usarlo sobre la moto es muy práctico, sobre todo el Prince Street. Llevo todo lo necesario, el peso va apoyado sobre el asiento trasero de la moto y la correa cruzada lo mantiene en su lugar. Cuando necesito hacer una foto, paso el bolso hacia adelante y tengo acceso rápido en segundos.

¿Qué sigue para tu carrera, tu arte y tu pasión?

Aclaro antes de responder que soy odontólogo y que hoy ejercer la odontología, con la revolución digital, es apasionante. Eso hace que reparta mi tiempo entre mejorar constantemente en ambas disciplinas, y lo bueno es que comparten muchísimo.

En fotografía, sobre todo en mi caso, que no es mi trabajo, el desafío más grande es seguir mejorando sin dejarme influenciar por las redes sociales. Obviamente, adaptarme a los cambios sin perder mi personalidad ni mi propia visión.

Describí un día promedio en tu vida como fotógrafo/videógrafo…

No tengo un día promedio. Como mi trabajo es independiente, voy acomodando los días. En general, trabajo en mi consultorio de martes a jueves. Como vivo en Buenos Aires, que es una ciudad hermosa, y voy en transporte público al consultorio, siempre llevo una cámara, ya que siempre hay motivos para hacer fotografía callejera.

Después del consultorio salgo en moto a tomar un café o a pasear con mis perros, obviamente también con un ONA y mi cámara.

Y cuando viajo, ya sea en moto o en auto, ese ya es tema para un artículo aparte.
