A soft hum passed her lips before her own bottle was lifted for another drink. It was partly as a way of letting herself intake a little more alcohol, and also a way of swallowing down her words a little longer before they eventually spilled out anyway. âOur versions of making it count are pretty different. Youâre taking classes and I⌠wouldnât even know where to begin. Between you and me, Iâm thinking me being back here wonât go over so well with anyone other than you and maybe Luna. My version of making it count might just have me taking off before anyone realizes Iâm even here.â
âClasses that no one besides you and Luna know about for reasons that... Iâm not sure anyone would even believe are actually going to do me any good,â she interrupted the other before she frowned. âItâs not that youâre not wanted, but youâve got to see if from their point of view. They want to know why you left in the first place, why youâre back, âcause as far as I can see it... what youâre saying is that youâre already gonna leave?â She shook her head. âI donât think thatâll help anything if you do leave again, and itâll only hurt my feelings. You wouldnât want to go and do that, now would you? Iâm a mother. Youâre a godmother. Suck it up and get to know your goddaughter and maybe that boy you left too.â Though as she spoke the last part, Devin put up her hands in peace to stop an argument before it even began. âAnd thatâs the last Iâll say on that âcause from where I was standing, you left of your own free will. I wouldnât know what thatâs like.â
@thckingdcmâ
As she went on, a brow was quirked with the corner of his lips twitching ever so slightly while offering a nod of his head. âYes, ma'am.â Things had changed plenty while he was locked away, yet there was enough that was still similar to the eye. âNo more horror movies and just one cookie,â he mumbled before pressing on to push his luck. âTwo on the weekends.â
      Devin rolled her eyes. âIf there is ever so much as a hint of a horror movie or more sugar than one cookie near that kid, youâre on babysitting duty while she rides the high and crashes from it. And trust me, not as cute of a kid when she crashes than when she was on top,â Devin told him with a slight twitch to her lips before she reached over to take a cookie herself. âShe gets that from her momma.â
@thckingdcmâ
âYeah, well maybe we could use her help then,â he offered with a shake of his head, not letting the words sit between them long before Adrian pushed on. âGive it a little time and maybe sheâll tell you why she left and why sheâs back. I hate to break it to you, but Luci was never all that easy to handle to begin with, so you canât expect it now. Either she tells you or she doesnât, but you canât go around punching holes in shit just âcause sheâs back.â
       Rafe shook his head. He couldnât imagine asking Luci to help them once again not after sheâd left them, left him when the hurt was still lingering about as if it were a fresh wound. Still, Adrian wasnât wrong but it was hard enough to hear it, let alone accept it as his gaze fell back on the hole in the hallway. It didnât do anything to change how he felt. Or the raw feeling inside. âIt never felt like this, not with her.. I donât know,â his voice trailed off as he hit the counter with his backside, his hurt arm cradled against his stomach as he stared at it like it would be able to make sense of everything. âEverything is wrong now that sheâs back and it... it shouldnât be that way.â
@thckingdcmâ
âWhat I decided to do.â The words were nothing more than a whisper passing her lips, slipping out just seconds before the nurse came back in the room and that had the both of them practically silenced. Her stomach twisted into knots over the years that had passed and how it all happened to begin with. Coming back had been a mistake and one she undoubtedly knew would be just that, yet Luciana found herself there anyway while knowing the heaviness that would settle from her being back. While she shouldnât have gone back and told herself that over and over again, it had been the closest thing she had to a home with most of them practically being family. However, nothing could stay the same and she knew that the second she got on a bus to leave. With her head ducked down, she felt the nurse move away after her hand was wrapped up, gaze still down on the floor a moment longer before she pushed herself up with her good hand to stand. Lips parted to say something before they were quickly pressed back together as she glanced back at him, feeling the need to reach out and make the nurse set his nose once more, though she only pushed her way out of the room instead, hoping to get out of the place before he was finished.
      Rafe knew that heâd said the wrong thing again. He could feel in the shift in the tension in the room, making everything heavier and worse for wear but he couldnât do anything about it when she made him feel as lost as he had in the moments after sheâd left. Yes, it had been her choice and one that sheâd made for the both of them as he opened his mouth to say something before she was gone but it was too late. He couldnât even push himself off the table before the nurse was back with a syringe and the ability to set everything back into itâs rightful place. By the time that she was through with him, Rafe wasnât sure that heâd be able to do anything at all other than lay down as he moved slowly like through quicksand. âItâll take a few hours for the side effects to wear off but take it easy and let yourself rest,â the nurse called out to him but his mind was only on seeing Luci again, before she left even if he couldnât find anything else to make sense of it all -- only that he wanted to see her as he made his way down the hall with the help of the nurse towards the possibility of someone waiting for him. Or not.

âWhat if safe isnât good enough?â Near death experiences and loss of life was not something he could tolerate any longer. Things were supposed to be in synch with Adrian home and in many ways they were. They were stronger and better with his older brother back in the fold but as long as they were under their motherâs thumb, danger was the only thing theyâd know. Right now they were scrambling for gigs that would fill their bank accounts. Secret missions that it wasnât necessary to bring her in on, just so they could have money of their own and plan for a future. What happened when she found out about the night. That Adrian quickly and willingly pulled the trigger, not to save the score but to save the girl.
Looking up at Devin, Santiago knew he couldnât put her or Birdie through what he had before. Leaving wasnât an option. Pushing her away wasnât an option. âI gotta know I can take care of my brotherâŚmy familyâŚâ His arm moved instinctively to wrap around her waist. Holding her closer, pulling her tighter until he was unwilling to let go. He needed the realization that she was here. That what he was feeling right now wasnât a dream. That in spite of his current mistakes, she still loved him. âI canât put Adrian in the position again. I canât have Rafe calling you and giving you a rundown so you wonât be worried. LunaâŚIâŚnot again.âÂ
Pushing himself up from the seat, Santiago turned and faced Devin. Wrapping his arms around her and holding her close to his body. When he thought he could communicate his thoughts coherently, he pulled back, staring down at her. âGive me a timeline. Iâm getting us out of this and away. This wonât be Birdieâs life. I wonât have you scared or herâŚI wonât explain to her why family is gone or worseâŚdeadâŚWeâre getting out of this.â
Safe had to be good enough, because there wasnât much else that Devin could hope for at the end of the day even on the worst when they didnât see eye to eye. Safe meant that he was home, that he would be able to tuck his daughter in at night and live to see another day, no matter how much trouble it meant or the fights they would endure.because they had another day to figure it all out. Another day, another night, and another chance to right the mistakes they continued to make when her stubbornness matched his own. âSafe is good enough tonight,â she murmured. It was good enough for now.Â
âThat wasnât your fault,â she told him, wanting to believe it wasnât when Smurf was running the show behind the scenes whether she was present there or not on this job. She was the reason they were all a part of this life, having not only led them down the path but given them all the tools to continue down it when they could have been someone else. âIt wasnât. Itâs never been your fault.â Her words were barely brushing against his skin, knowing that most of what she said these days were taken with a grain of salt with all the animosity and disconnection between them, but she never blamed him for everything. Just enough to make her heart ache.Â
Her fingers ran along the back of his head, feeling him pressed against her waist as she let him process and feel everything that he neglected when they were out in the field and couldnât feel a damn thing. Not if they were all going to make it back, even if she cursed him constantly -- the last thing Devin wanted was to never see him or any of the rest make it back. âLuna, Rafe, Adrian, theyâre all alive.. youâre alive.â Her voice was low, caught somewhere in the mix of emotions when he pulled her in tight against his chest but didnât want to trust all that she felt when it could have so easily been manipulated by Smurf the next chance she got into his head. She wanted to believe him, that this wouldnât be their life but Devin never knew the strength of his motherâs hold as she gaze up into his dark eyes and wanted so desperately to know the truth. âAre you... do you mean that?â
thckingdcmâ:
âNormal,â she repeated his word with a bitter taste on her tongue as well as a humorless laugh that wrapped around the words. As far back as she could remember, nothing had ever been normal around there, and yet that was still their very own sense of the word that she once remembered being her own as well. It was far from anything that could truly be considered the word, yet she remembered living in it with him as best as possible without the need for anything else. With him by her side, Devin there with her as well, Luna and Adrian always nearby, and even Santiago there when they couldnât stand one another â it was still a sense of normal that she tried pushing away the thought of when Luciana first left. That became her family more than anything else that she made her way back to, then she left and it was all gone in an instant with no returning. Holding her hand out in front of her while curling her fingers as best as possible and biting back the pain, she knew there was only one option at this point for her. âDonât worry. You wonât have to put up with me much longer.â
âAs normal as things can be after you did what you decided to do,â he threw back at her, unable to even stomach the thought of her leaving again or combat it with the anger and frustrations that rose up every single time that he saw her. So many questions rose up his throat but got stuck behind the pain that disguised itself as anger when he kept to his area in the small room. âThatâs not,â he shook his head, dropping it between his shoulders slightly as he winced from the pain. âThatâs not what I meant.â His voice was defeated, lost somewhere between the anger in his bones as the exhaustion in his veins that wanted to stop hurting and pushing but couldnât understand anything going on between them when there was supposed to be nothing there. But before he could say anything else, the nurse was back in the room and doctoring the two of them without affording them a chance to say another word at each other. When the nurse was looking at Luciâs hand, he was struggling to keep from staring at the two of them to when they came over to deal with his nose -- Rafe could only see stars that shifted when the nurse had to help set his hand that had a broken finger or two. He stopped listening, knowing that Luna would remember it all for him when he wanted to speak to Luciana but couldnât find the words.
thckingdcmâ:
âThereâs plenty worse,â he mumbled while knowing it was true when he had done his fair share of what very well could have been considered worse. Pushing Luna away when he got locked up would fall under that category and he was still trying to figure out a way of fixing it. âI know thereâs worse, so just.. donât be a fucking moron, okay? Donât go punching holes in the wall to figure out your shit. You wanna know why sheâs back? Ask her.â
âEasier said than done,â he muttered, considering dropping his head into his hands except for the pain radiating off the one that had gone through a wall recently. âShe wouldnât tell me why she left in the first place, why would she tell me why sheâs back now? Itâs not like the timing could be any better either. Not with Santiago wanting to go hard and Smurf wanting everything to feel like it used to be before you were gone.â
thckingdcmâ:
There might have been a split second where he thought to maybe get a dog and he shook it off as soon as he heard her words. âYouâre being a real buzzkill, Devin. Iâm pretty sure there used to be a time when you would have said yes to the idea of having another dog around here.â Even if that was a very different time when they were all younger and less aware of everything that was really going on. âFine. Iâll cut back on the cookies and just stick with the horror movies that keep her up all night.â
âOf course I would have. I would have been the one by your side and in your ear, everyoneâs ear but things have changed. More than any of us like to say,â she admitted to quietly before she set aside her mug and set it in the sink to be cleaned later. âI donât think about myself first anymore, or what I want unless it has to do with that kid. And so help me, if she comes screaming to me about a horror movie keeping her up at night, this whole place is going to turn into a horror movie after what I do to you.â She finished a faint smile, letting him know that she was only somewhat serious before she was filling the mug with water from the tap. âOne cookie.â
thckingdcmâ:
âNo.â Actually letting it out to tell someone she was leaving the way she had couldnât have changed a damn thing when there might have only been one person who could change her mind and that hadnât been the case. Things happened the way they did for a reason and maybe it all had her coming back here for reason, no matter how much she hated it. âIt wouldnât have.â
âYou know what this means now though,â she started to say, picking her words carefully when she knew how close they came to her own thoughts and concerns with allowing herself to come back to this world again. Her heart. It was going to get her killed one day and that would have been the best case scenario. âMaking sure you make it count now that youâre back before youâre gone again âcause I donât know about you, but this should be no oneâs long term.â

It wasnât supposed to go that way. It should have been a done deal. In and out without tipping off the mark but it didnât work that way. In the end, Luna was hurt and Santi was sure Adrian had destroyed his room by the steady sounds of destruction that rang out through the house. One thing he did know, his brotherâs aim was still precise. It took one round to send the man to the ground. It was a mess. One he was left thinking through to clean up. Heâd gone back to the scene. The house was spotless. There was no sign of their entry or larceny. The body was gone and buried but the guilt remained. He wasnât a saint. Heâd never claimed to be, but heâd hurt his family. He knew what Luna had fought through in her youth. Just like he knew the promises, Adrian had made to her. This job was his idea and everything had gone wrong.Â
The what ifs rang out loudly in his mind. Had they been thirty seconds later, Luna would have been hurt or worse. If Adrianâs aim would have been off, death would have been the only option for them. That would leave Birdie without a father and Devin filled with regret for even coming back to him. Santiago didnât say anything. He took a seat at the counter. She was there waiting for him. Sheâd seen everything play out since theyâd returned home.Â
Burying his face in his hands, Santiago didnât allow himself to cry. Exhaling loudly, he lifted his head again, âI fucked up Dev. I fucked up so bad.â This made it clear to him. There was only one option for him and his family, out. They needed to work to get out.
@fortifiedkingdom
Devin hated this part. She knew it came with the territory of loving a man that was meant for war, but the one that he fought wasn't only with others but within himself as she clutched the counter until her knuckles faded towards white. Not quiet there, not yet. And not this time would she be the one with knees knocking and pushed out the door with a baby in her arms, sent packing because things got messy once before. He promised that it wouldn't be the same again, even if her heart struggled to believe him completely -- it still loved that damn man, more than her mind could logically tell her to cut tail and run with what money she'd stashed up and finish her degree anywhere else with Birdie in her arms once more.
Word had reached her immediately, Rafe calling ahead to alert her to what happened which she knew was slightly in turn to make sure that Luci knew too despite their walking around on eggshells around each other. Devin didn't believe it would stay that way for much longer, not when Rafe was stuck behind the rest when it came to clean up while Adrian got Luna out and Santiago finished what they'd started; another job. Still, she wasn't completely sure she knew how her reaction was going to be when he came back until he was seated on the other side of the counter while she watched him slowly come to terms with what happened.
But what he said, it wasn't what she was expecting which caught her as off guard as how she reacted when she moved around the counter to wrap her arms around his head and hold him gently against her stomach without a word. They stayed like that for a moment, the palm of her hand running along the curve of his head and brushing through his short hair before resting against his cheek as she tilted his face to look up at her. She knew what his mother would tell him, to pick himself back up and strike back until others bled as her way to fix it but heâd come to Devin, not Smurf. "Youâre safe. Theyâre safe."

âWhereâs your head at?â Santiago didnât really need to ask. He knew the answer to that question. Weeks had passed since the whole uprising that resulted in a hole in the wall. Damaged hand and nose had healed but did anything else. âMaybe a job will help take your mind off things. Or at least give you a different way to focus your energy.â He was a hypocrite. He spent just as much time sulking and angry but at least he had the shop as a distraction. Then there was Birdie when he was home. He had a way of appearing like everything was fine but there were still moments that got under his skin. Especially when it came to the frequency that Devin wasnât home at night, at least not until late, and Luna was the one picking his daughter up from school on those days. âMight be risky. I just finished three cars for a customer. Full customization. Weâre talking a couple of grand. He paid me in cash. You only use cash when you donât want your moves tracked.â Taking a seat next to Rafe. âAddress is on file with his paper work. I say we scope it for a week or two. See if itâs worth the hit. Break the safe. Take some stacks. Maybe pick up a few things worth selling to get more cash. Reset expectations around here and let everyone know weâre still in the game.â
âGone.â The longer Luci was around, the less he was able to keep anything on straight when it came to his entire world until she was gone again. A time that didnât come soon enough but neither did it have him wanting to see her for the last time again. All Rafe wanted was some clarification to all that left him confused, but it was never there. Always out of his grasp. âMaybe, youâre right,â he managed to get out with a clenched jaw and a shake of his head when it came to realizing what heâd actually said out loud. âI still canât believe I said that out loud.â He wanted to laugh, wanted to care enough, but struggled to find anything at all as he leaned back in his seat and let Santiago take the lead, something that theyâd worked together at over the past few years as Rafe was the one that stepped up as much as he could. Without his brother, Rafe wouldnât have made it this far at all. âYou want to go after someone who does business with you?â He pressed his lips together, going over what Santiago was presenting with as the pros and cons were in balance when it came to choosing a job that could eventually be linked back to them if anyone else found out. âItâs not bad if we take our time with it and donât rush anything.â

For : Anyone, Open
It was time. The family had taken a few months off, allowed things to fall back into place since Adrianâs release and Devinâs return home. It wasnât that money was drying up. They were smart. Laundering and cleaning movie through their respective legitimate businesses. The bar was doing better than it ever had since the renovations had been completed in the spring. The customs shop that was Santiagoâs baby had a wait list for vehicles to service. They looked like they were doing things the right way and that made Saint or anyone like him angry that they couldnât catch the JimĂŠnez family in anything. It didnât stop them from showing up, especially Saint.Â
Smurf, however, was tired of playing it nice. She wanted more, especially now that all her boys were reunited. The pressure to pull another job, started two weeks after Adrian returned home. Santiago had managed to keep her at bay. He even sent her away for a few weeks to give them all a chance to settle. To wrap his mind around having his family back and how he could avoid screwing it all up again. He had to figure out Lucianaâs place in all of this too. She was a contact. An asset. But she definitely wasnât his biggest fan and Santiago wasnât sure she could be trusted. Heâd spent enough time thinking and now it was time to get back to business.Â
âWe need to pull a job.âÂ
He didnât start the conversation with hello. Hi. How are you. Nothing. Just straight to business. âSecure enough of a bag to keep her quiet until the New Year.â It was dangerous. They all had something to lose some more than others. âIâve got a few ideas but I want to know how you feel. What youâre thinking.â
âIâm thinking that Iâm not the person to ask about this, not â â Not when he felt the way that he did lately, confused and angry at every turn without a real way to get it all out of his system that he could focus back on the jobs they would eventually start to pull again when the dust settled around Adrianâs release. Sure, heâd became the man with the plan in the otherâs absence but all he felt since Luci came back was the same kid that didnât his ass from a hole in the ground until his focus became sharpened and put to work. His confidence was sorely lacking, along with his ability to focus anymore, and with it â he looked to either one of his brotherâs for some semblance of normalcy to bring him back. âNot anymore, not lately; take your pick. But, Iâm here. Iâm willing to listen to what youâve got.â
thckingdcmâ:
It was one thing to practically get dragged out of the bar and tossed into the car by Luna and something else entirely when finding herself making her way into a room with him and no one else. The nurse was in and out in a second, barely staying long enough for it to feel like anyone else was there and that had once been a feeling she welcomed when Luciana hardly ever wanted anyone else there. If it was a world with only the two of them, she would have been thrilled when Rafe had been all she ever wanted in life, or that had been the case four years ago before the truth was thrust upon her and had her taking off the first chance she got. There was no waiting around for someone who didnât want her there and didnât want to follow along side her, not when she learned the truth and it still stuck with her to this very day while she paced only a few steps throughout the room. They could have been tossed into separate spaces or even something with a divider so she didnât have to look over at him, though that wouldnât make a different when she refused to look his way now and still felt him there. As if that wasnât enough, his words cut through the silence and had Luci biting down on her tongue to bite back the venom that eventually slipped out anyway. âStill canât wait for me to be gone, huh?â
Every time Rafe opened his mouth to speak, nothing came out the right way or any way that would seem to work at closing the gap between them. Harder to do when he could barely look at her without feeling the pain flare up in places that she hadnât hit. Still, the other choice was staying silent and wait for her to leave again before he ended up where he was four years prior when sheâd left the first time. There was nothing that he was able to do then, just as well as now when he simply felt helpless as the nurse who was their own way around each other was in and out and left them to the stagnant silence that was suffocating. He couldnât breathe. He couldnât think straight. He couldnât even remember what it was like to say the right thing or make her smile, replace the pain that heâd put on them with something else, or even know how it felt to be with her. âYou were the one saying that you were ready to leave,â he shot back with an exhausted sense of self as he slumped back down onto the cot in the middle of the room with his arm cradled in his lap. âIâm just wondering when that is so that everything can get back to normal again.â
thckingdcmâ:
âItâs what big brother does best.â Not that he would have known with the years he was locked behind bars, but that was something he could change and fix now, even if it just came to little things like this. âI got it, so donât worry. Just⌠figure shit out with her before itâs really too late and before you do something even worse.â
A big brother that he had been without for a few years now, Rafe reminded himself as he swallowed the words that would only push away another person. âWhatâs worse than what Iâve already done and said? I.. the way she looked at me, it wasnât good.â And heâd done that.

âShe knows better than to feed me after 9 and sheâs still there with something for me to taste test anyway. Iâm not blaming Luna completely, but Iâm not saying itâs all my fault either.â Even if it was more his fault than anyone elseâs. âRight â give Birdie the option of a carrot or a cookie and which one would anyone pick? Iâm just working my way to become her favorite uncle and itâs my duty to make sure that happens.â
âYou could do that without sugar though I know itâll be difficult when Rafe has that damn dog. Birdie loves it but donât you dare get a dog for that girl, I can barely handle the animals that live here as it is. We donât need another one,â she shot back with a sigh and a tease. âI blame both you and Luna, which suffice to say is something I havenât been able to say for a long time. Itâs nice, except when it means that Birdie isnât sleeping for the night.â
thckingdcmâ:
âIâm not the tease here.. â usually,â she spoke around a smile curving at her lips that felt natural and perhaps it wouldnât last long, but it always seemed to come with easy when Luciana found herself around Devin. Whether it was now or when they were younger, there was always the woman before her that made things a little better. A few moments passed before she pushed on without glancing at the other beside her. âI should have told you I was leaving.â
âUsually,â she repeated after the other with a tap of her fingers against her cheek before her hands fell once more. The silence wasnât uncomfortable, not between them when Devin knew the other well enough to remind herself that some things needed to be kept while others needed to be said out loud. âIt wouldnât have changed anything if you had.â
