It took Courfeyrac a bit of time to find Marius and stay undetected. Eventually, however, he managed to slip over to him.
Psst!!
Seeing his dear friend looking like a sad dog in a cage, Courf couldnāt help but smile faintly in sympathy.
With Eponine leaving not so long ago, Marius hadnāt expected to hear another voice soon after. As he saw Courf, his face lit up.
Courf! I- Howād you get in??
He made his way to the bars of his cell, in total disbelief that he stood face to face with his friend now.
I snuck in.
Without thinking, Courf reached between the bars to carefully touch Mariusā cheek. It was relieving to see him alive and well. He hadnāt known what to expect.
He stared in silence for a moment, then removed his hand to lightly hit Marius on the head.
You scared the hell out of me! Never do that again.
Snuck in?? Courf thatās!-
He fell silent at the familiar touch. He couldnāt help but sort of.. miss it? Itād been far too long since heād been home.
I.. Ouch!-
It didnāt hurt, but god forbid he be dramatic for once.
Iām sorry! I hadnāt meant to be arrested! A formal apology somehow spiraled into- well. This. ..But now that youāre here, Cosette should be paying bail upfront, right?
His face slightly reddened at uttering Cosetteās name.
Sorry- I can assume.. āPonine told me.
Courf crossed his arms and sighed. The fact that Marius had believed an apology to any officer, especially Javert, would go well was unbelievable.
..Yeah. She is. Way to spoil the surprise.
He had been hoping to keep Marius oblivious for as long as possible. Oh well.
Still, I figured it was best not to take the risk of them keeping you. So here I am! Getting you out.. somehow.
Whoops- Sorry.
Marius chuckled, a sheepish smile now plastered on his face.
Getting me out? Iām not sure how you plan to do that since. Well..
He adjusted his grip on the bars of the cell, a small reminder that this cell was in fact still there and solid as ever.
I mean, unless you managed to grab the keys- which is like- impossible..
Hearing Marius mention keys, Courfeyrac couldnāt help but grin. Without a word, he reached into the pocket of his waistcoat and pulled out a key ring. He jingled the attatched keys in Mariusā face before laughing.
They werenāt hard to snatch. Although, I donāt intend on making a habit of stealing from the police.
He looked through the keys for a moment and frowned slightly. He hadnāt a clue of which was the correct one, nor did he know how much time he had to figure it out.
Iām most concerned about sneaking you out of this place.
Marius could only stare ahead at Courf, regretting every word he had said in the last five seconds.
Of course you have them..
He sighed, laying his head against the bars. He couldnāt expect any less from his friend. However, it was a plan. More than Marius had.
Still! This is- I- illegal! Crime with crime?? I mean we went to law school! ..But, if thereās no other way out then I guess you should start trying every key..
He said, smiling as he settled for this highly illegal plan.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, mon cher! No one wants you stuck in here, and I didnāt think they would be kind enough to let Cosette bail you. So here we are.
That being said, Courfeyrac began the painstaking process of testing each key on the cellās lock. He constantly glanced over his shoulder and down both sides of the hall out of fear someone would see them.
Stupid lock. Why wonāt it just-
Finally, the lock clicked. He finally found the right key! Sighing in relief, he attempted to push it open. It didnāt budge easily, causing him to use his entire body to push it open. It swung backwards towards Marius with a loud creak and caused Courf instant panic.
Shit! Why the hell is this thing so loud?!
They surely wouldā¦. No they wouldnāt.
Marius sighed, if bail were truly allowed then he wouldāve been face to face with his beloved Cosette already. Courf had a point, it was now or never.
Oh thank god, you found it!
Halfway through the many keys, he had moved to stand closer to the door. To just his luck, this put him right in front it.
Past the thud of his face colliding with the door, he couldnāt hear much besides his own yelp of pain. He let out a groan as he reached for his now-bleeding nose.
I think- Ow- My nose. :(
Courfeyrac, only now realizing the door hit Marius straight in the face, panicked slightly.
Oh god. Sorry- Here..
He patted himself down in hopes of finding something in one of his pockets. Eventually, he came upon a handkerchief and held it out to Marius.
This is why we donāt stand in front of heavy doors!
// @alouette-cosette & @javert-de-letoiles if yall wanna take notice of these two loudmouths,, go for it
A voice floats down from the main office to the cells.
ā¦The devil was that?
Marius gladly takes the handkerchief, trying to stop any blood.
That was hardly my fault!..
He falls silent as another voice fills the hall. His gaze flickers between where the main office is and his friend, a worried look on his face.
Courf- I- Oh god- What do we do?! What if he checks the cells!!!
You were standing directly in front of it, what do you mean itās notā
Courfeyrac froze. A voice from down the hall in some nearby room. A voice Courf very strongly disliked hearing.
..We need to get out of here.
He scanned the hall, listening in silence. No immediate footsteps or sign of anyone on either side. But who was to say how long that would last? How much time did they have to come up with a plan?
We can, errr.. Perhaps we can go out the way I snuck in. Although, I donāt know if it will work again..
I mean, if it worked the first time then surely itād work a second! ..Hopefully.
As Courf began to walk off, Marius followed. It was only leaving the building unseen that theyād have to worry about now. Well. Thatās what he had thought until a certain mademoiselle crossed his mind. He halted to a stop, turning towards the main office.
Courf- Stop! How will Cosette know youāve freed me? We have to give her a sign or- well- something!
He returned down the hall, dangerously encroaching on the houndās territory. He only needed to grab Cosetteās attention..
Courf! Come on!
He poked his head in the doorway of the office, careful not to be seen.
As Courf began walking, he kept his eyes sharp. Someone could round the corner at any given moment and blow their cover. Upon hearing his name, however, he looked over his shoulder at Marius, who was already moving in the opposite direction.
Marius- Marius, what are youā Oh my god.
He sighed in exasperation. After a moment of contemplation, he followed after Marius. He couldnāt let this fool get himself caught. He briefly poked his head in as well, then stepped away to rummage through his pockets.
Hold on,
Courfeyrac murmured. Eventually, he pulled a crumpled pastry wrapper from his pocket and decided that was their best bet. He silently tossed it into the office and poked his head back into the door way, watching in hopes of it being seen.
Hm?
Marius watched as his friend threw the wrapper.
What if he sees that instead! I donāt take the inspector for much of a pastries person with wrappers in his coat..
With not much other option and a desire to leave soon, Marius decided to do something that was questionable, but felt like itād work in the moment.
Courf.. you may not like what Iām about to do..
He moved to where he now stood in the doorway, gesturing and flailing his arms. A bit obvious, but.. yeah.
Psst.. Pssst!!!
( @javert-de-letoiles @alouette-cosette if either one of you wants to reply to our idiocy /silly)
Pontmercy is right this way, Monsieur. Follow me.
Javert gets up and walks in the direction of the cells. Another man is following behind him.
What are youā Marius!
Courfeyrac hissed, whispering as loudly as possible without completely giving them away. What the hell was he thinking?! Was he trying to get them caught?! The wrapper was one thing, but standing in the doorway flailing his arms?? Christ.
He glanced into the office. There was another man now, one Courf didnāt recognize. Strange, but he was keeping Javert occupied. Perhaps that left more time to catch Cosetteās attention. But of course, a plan could never go so smoothly for the two of them. The next thing he knew, Javert and the man were headed in their direction.
Courfeyrac grabbed Marius by the shoulders and yanked him out of the doorway with a glare.
We need to go. Right now. Come on!
He spoke louder than intended, though it this point, he doubted it mattered. Without another word, he grabbed Mariusā wrist and began pulling him down the hall.

It took Courfeyrac a bit of time to find Marius and stay undetected. Eventually, however, he managed to slip over to him.
Psst!!

Courfeyrac hesitated outside with his hand hovering over the door. Having only heard of Cosette through Marius, he wasnāt quite sure what to expect of her.
I pray her father isnāt the one to answer,
He murmured, finally bringing himself to knock.
Cosette opened the door, a bit surprised to see someone she was unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, she gave him a smile.
Oh, hello. Are you here to see my papa?
Courf looked up as the door opened, relieved to see it wasnāt the old gentleman answering.
Good afternoon, mademoiselle. Um- No, Iām not.
He smiled awkwardly as he bowed in greeting.
Would you happen to be Cosette?
Should she be panicking yet? He knew her name. She subconsciously grabbed her arm that had been broken in the past. Should she run for her papa anyway?
No. She could do this. Besides, she had a knife in her pocket if anything did go wrong. And she could scream loudly. That would probably get Papa or Javert to come quickly.
She very briefly considered lying about her name, but her curiosity won out over her caution.
Yes. I am Cosette.
She still answered cautiously, hiding herself slightly behind the door, just in case the did need to run away quickly.
Courfeyrac blinked once she confirmed her identity. He studied Cosette briefly, noting that she certainly was pretty. It was no wonder Marius claimed to be in love with her. Still, it stung.
Nameās Courfeyrac. Iām a friend of Mariusā, if you recall him.
He knew little about this woman aside from his friend being head over heels. Who was to say she had only Marius in her life? Not that he could judge..
Speaking of, loverboyās gotten himself into trouble, which is why Iāve come to you.
Hearing that he was a friend of Marius helped her relax a bit more. She was still cautious, but she was pretty sure sheād heard Enjolras mention the name Courfeyrac before. And she was worried about what had happened to Marius. Had Montparnasse gotten to him too? Sheād heard he was back.
Oh dear God, what happened to him? Is he alright?
I havenāt been to see him, but he seems alright for now. Canāt say for how long that peace will last, though.
Courfeyrac shifted awkwardly, realizing he would have to explain everything.
Long story short, Marius was arrested. He tried to lie for the sake of our cause and for me and ended up getting caught in it.
He got arrested?! Oh dear God. The poor man. Thatās horrible.
She looked at Courfeyrac curiously.
Why are you telling me this, though? Donāt you have lots of people who can help? Thatās what your whole cause is, is it not?
It wasnāt that she was unconcerned for Marius, quite the opposite. But she was confused why he would come to her instead of just trying to get him out himself.
Ah- Well, the law doesnāt seem to like us very much. And a few of us have.. a history. I myself have been arrested once.
Courfeyrac left it at that for a moment. Then, upon realizing how awful of a first impression it was to say he was arrested, he added,
Not for anything bad-! All I did was protest and pass out flyers.
Courf cleared his throat.
Anyways, we feared what would happen if we sent a person from our circle, so we needed someone from the outside who couldnāt be traced back to us.
She rubbed her no longer broken arm as she processed the information.
And so you thought of me?
She would be lying if she said she didnāt want to see Marius. She absolutely did. Sheād just hoped for better circumstances.
Well, it wasnāt my idea. If it were up to me, Iād charge in there demanding they release him.
Courf snorted in amusement at the thought.
But, considering you were one of the most likely people to be willing to help our poor Marius, yes.
Courfeyrac adjusted his tie before continuing,
The original plan was to have you bail him out. While thatās not too terrible of an idea, it feels too easy to just have someone bail him without any questions. So, I was thinking I would accompany you. Just in case things go wrong.
She frowned a bit, rubbing her arm again.
Are you expecting something to go wrong? I mean, I absolutely want to help Marius any way I can, I just worry.
Do you think theyāre being unkind to him?
Iām just anticipating the worst. Itās difficult to say what may happen when it involves our cause when weāre hardly popular with the law. Better to be prepared than not.
Courf paused briefly. Marius was fine. He had to be..
Iām sure heās alright. They have no real reason to mistreat him unless itās out of their own cruelty.
She chewed on her lip, considering. She couldnāt help but fear the worst, as much as she wanted to believe Courfeyrac.
Yes, well, let us not leave him at the mercy of the police any longer than we have to. We should go now.
Wonderful thinking. Heās been there long enough.
Courf turned and began walking, pausing to make sure Cosette was at his side. After exiting through the gate, he sighed.
Thank you for wanting to help. Itās been dreadful having to worry about him from afar.
She quickly followed after him, grabbing her hat and gloves and then closing the door behind her.
Of course! I do care about him.
Was it too early to say that she cared about him? They hadnāt spoken much yet.
And I worry about him. It must be awful, knowing what happened to him and being unable to do anything about it.
How do you know him? If you donāt mind my asking.
Courf said nothing regarding that first statement. She cared. Of course she did, she wouldnāt have agreed to help otherwise, but it still wasnāt pleasant to hear.
We had a class together, blah blah. I kept nagging him and that lead to our friendship. Weāre currently roommates.
He shoved his hands into his pockets as they walked.
Iāve heard how you two met dozens of times now. Marius likes to talk about you. But Iād love to hear it from your perspective.
Oh, well, he came to my garden. Apparently he had been looking for me. And heād previously spoken to my papa, so Iād heard his name.
Anyway, he came to my garden and we spoke for some time. He really is a beautiful man, and Iām glad he found me.
She smiled at the memory.
He did say we could talk again soon. I will admit I was not expecting a prison break for our second meeting.
She says it with a bit of a laugh, but itās clear she is concerned about him.
He certainly is a beautiful thing..
Murmured Courfeyrac, smiling faintly just at the thought of that freckled face. Upon catching himself, he forced his expression to be neutral once more and cleared his throat.
Iām sure heāll be pleasantly surprised to see you. I donāt think anyone would expect their second time meeting to be a jailbreak.
He fell silent again for a moment after glancing Cosetteās way. He may have envied her, but Marius wasnāt his. How could he call himself his best friend if he wanted his love life to fail?
..Heās been wanting to see you again. Before this, he was constantly pacing our apartment like a madman thinking about you. He kept going back and forth on a time that "felt right".
Cosette couldnāt help but blush a little, hearing how Marius was very much anticipating their meeting again.
Well, it may not be a perfect second meeting, but I will be happy to see him regardless. And weāll find another way to meet for the time after this.
She frowned suddenly.
You do think theyāll let him go, yes? I hate the thought of his being stuck in jail.
Oh, Iām sure heāll want to meet with you again, especially after being heroically saved. No doubt Iāll be hearing all about it. Iāll have to make sure he doesnāt procrastinate it for weeks on end. ļæ¼
Courfeyrac laughed quietly. Marius had a habit of putting things off. He would absolutely wait to see Cosette again simply due to his nerves.
..I hope they do. Heās done nothing wrong, but their spite alone may be the reason they keep him there.
Yes, well, I will convince them to let him go. One way or another. We wonāt leave until heās out!
They arrived at the jail and Cosette took a deep breath to calm herself. She was nervous, but ready to get Marius back.
Are you ready for this?
Agreed. Weāre not leaving empty handed.
Upon reaching the jail, Courf looked up and studied the building. He prayed this would go smoothly. The last thing the revolution needed was to get into more trouble.
Mm. Ready as Iāll ever be.
He sighed, pulling his hands out of his pockets as he looked at Cosette.
I wish you luck.
I wish you luck as well!
She gave him a small smile before walking into the building, hoping for the best.
Courfeyrac waited outside for a few moments as he contemplated his next move. He believed Cosette to be fully capable of getting Marius out herself. And if anything were to go wrong, it would be wise for him to wait.
However, he wanted to be the first face Marius saw. He was the reason the poor man was in this mess to begin with, so surely it was only fair that he was the one to get him out of it. Disregarding logic and his promise to Combeferre to be cautious, Courf came to a decision and searched for another way inside.
Courfeyrac hesitated outside with his hand hovering over the door. Having only heard of Cosette through Marius, he wasnāt quite sure what to expect of her.
I pray her father isnāt the one to answer,
He murmured, finally bringing himself to knock.
