Been a minute! Work was crazy and I didn't play too much this week or weekend. Still getting through Janthir's story. I'm on chapter 14 of 17, I think; just saw the memory of Mabon. I think reusing the fractal mechanic of agony for an in-universe plot beat is cool as fuck. I wonder what happens if you walk into the valley with max agony resist.
Got April to 40! Honestly looking forward to doing Claw Island again in ten levels just because it's been so long since I've done it. Will be interested to see if anything's changed in like. Ten years lol. Same with the Zhaitan 80 story stuff. I have it in my head that they made it a little less tedious at some point but I don't know if that's true? We shall see!
Picked up the War-Torn Marauder warclaw skin since it's back in the store and wow I really like, even more than I thought I would! I like very few of the warclaw skins and ive been waiting for that one since I picked the game back up. I love its big dumb bear roar. I hope eventually we get more journeykin skins, that's one of the few models I like.
Need to pick up a name change contract for Cyrus because they're going to be Cicero instead! My little play group got together and fleshed out our warband backstory this weekend which was super fun. I have a better bead on Cicero (any pronouns) now: she was the black sheep of her warband and not trusted with anything important due to her necromancy, and eventually jumps ship to the Red warband, where she's surprised to find she's taken seriously and treated like an equal member. I think I will try to sketch her after my stuff at work is handled. Her bandmates both have sick fullbody art already and I just have the one headshot sketch!!!
What else. Stuck some zerker trinkets on Foxglove to complete his WvW build and called it a day. Actually went and tried to do some WvW the other day and was Very Lost, but I had fun following a commander around and trying to figure out what was going on.
Going to make an asura out of another OC of mine I think, I've got the design down and just need to pick a class. Need a new slot too, probably, unless I can talk myself into deleting one of the characters I don't use At All and have no interest in trying lol. Turns out if you have a lot of characters all doing different things it gives you a lot more to do in the game. Crazy

Not too much to report; mostly just been leveling April (pleasantly fast, it's been years since I last leveled a character) and some Janthir story.
Me and partner Payne agree partner Kris would probably like WvW, so I'm gearing up a character for that. Simple, you would think. NO. I'm following a metabattle build and my toxic trait is wanting to follow builds as closely as possible. My build is from when all Zerker was meta. I had to get completely new armor, and of course the armor the build calls for are rare selectable pieces, and no one told me I could get a full set from the WvW vendor for like 12g and some WvW currency. I wasted. Lots of time. BUT Foxglove has his WvW armor now. So I just need to get his trinkets. Fuck

I finally looked into jade bots a bit more and got my core up to rank 6. I kind of rushed through EoD's maps so I'm missing a huge chunk of the masteries. Would be a good one to redo with another character and actually do the events and things. Currently rocking the glide boost and the jade slivers one.

In my hubris, I cleaned out my bank and shared inventory slots recently, and with all the confidence of a dog running into a glass door I used up my *three* instant 80 boosts. "I don't need these!" I said, like a fool. "I'm not making anyone new any time soon!"
Then I immediately made my norn ranger.
The good: a lot of my character development comes during leveling! I'll hear an ambient line on a map I haven't been on in months and go "hmm, what does this character think about that?" Plus I haven't really explored core Tyria since I got my skyscale, which makes traversal a lot less intimidating.

Still working my way through Janthir's story, about to do the open world Titan meta in it I think? Waiting Sorrow is pretty well written, and has an excellent voice actor. Partner says he's heard the tail end of the xpac is divisive in terms of the map so Im at least curious to see what it entails.

More fun dev with Fray! We got more details of his backstory and history with partner's characters and I think it'll be a fun space to explore. Looking ahead, I think Janthir will be a good place for him to get some unambiguous Do-Gooding, which he'll need to get his sense of self back. (For context, Fray's original inspiration was BotW Link, so heroing is in his DNA.)

Roller a few times on mount licenses and got good picks for once! Got the broken-horned warclaw and one of the cobra skyscales, both of which immediately went to April. I'm looking real heavily at the gyro roller as a universal skin for the beetle across all my guys. I just don't care for the bug. The hyena warclaw is also coming back to the shop soon... Send help

Me and the partners three-manned Swampland for my legendary! I also found out one of them had started HOPE a while ago and got burned out on the same step I'm at. We're going to try to work on it together :)
I've been trying to get the Tyrian Service Medal, for... something. A title, I think? I've just got the Orr events left but man I forgot how janky some of the old maps can be. I'll get em eventually though. I'm also trying to get ahead of the time gated pieces I'll need for HOPE, though I'm very intermittent about it lol.
More excitingly I got some good dev in on Fray's gw2 iteration! I wanted him to have a more engaging arc, and partner suggested returning to a kind of forgotten theme he has, which is approximately "if I'm not a hero, what is the purpose of me?" I think it'll lend itself to some really fun storytelling and I've already got a few short stories cooking with the new premise. I kept looking for ways to hook Lyre in and I think she has the same base problem of not having any real conflict or thing she Wants. Need to think on what her driving factors are. Foxglove's has traditionally been "put Iomadh to rest" but that kind of gets resolved early on. I don't know him very well outside of that is what I am realizing.
Oh, and to my shock and surprise I tried making another OC of mine, April, into a norn and it actually worked pretty well. I suspect getting a non-boobilicious outfit together for her will be a Trial, but I'd like another character to work on and April makes for a really fun character to play off partner Payne's character Baj, who is uncannily similar to her in a lot of ways. Plus! Had a cool premise for tying her to some Norn stuff, and I've never really explored that part of the game and lore.
Anyway I've now got a sylvari Fray playlist and it's very woe is me. I have to work overtime instead of having a weekend, so having a new chewtoy for my ADHD brain is helping a lot.
Finally finished the story dragon strike missions UGHHH. Along with Dragonstorm, which probably would have been cooler had I not already done the open world version. Whatever, nbd. I will say this: Rytlock apologizing to Ryland as Ryland died was probably the most affecting cutscene I've yet seen in the game. Very small moment but really well delivered.
I also Attempted the griffon race in the festival and man! I am just not built for repeated attempts at difficult tasks. Part of it is certainly that I simply do not have a lot of practice maneuvering the griffon in the tricky ways it wants me to and I don't fully understand the mechanics of the griffon. (Why do I run out of Go Up Juice halfway through going Up?) I think it's the same reason I have so little patience for jumping puzzles. Precision is not my thing.
Trying to decide if I want to buy the Zafirah's Rifle skin for fray. In our lore he learns to shoot from my partner's deadeye who has a very elegant and specific aesthetic and I thought it would be fun to reflect that in his rifle skin. I also need to start working on Infinite Light for him. I wonder what the mystic forge guy does with those 250 orichalcum sword blades
Will hopefully be doing the Swampland fractal tonight with my partners, which will mean I can proceed onward with HOPE. I should probably also look into what the next section will want because you KNOW it'll be insane
In the interest of trying to maintain my interest in the game longer term (instead of my usual two weeks of hyperfixation followed by completely dropping it for two years), I shall record my goings-on in gw2 as it occurs to me to do so. Gameplay diary continues below.
Currently, I'm rotating between three toons in a bid to keep my interest up. I've got some long term goals I'm using each one for, so hopefully that will help.
Toons include:
Fray Bladesaint, m sylvari holosmith, newest addition and based off the OC I'm currently most unwell about
Lyre Lifespring, f charr deadeye, my first character and newly returned to her original name
Shackler Foxglove, m sylvari necro, another of my old guard GW2 guys who I have never felt a single desire to change anything about visually. I got it in one.
Currently, Fray is hopping between Janthir's story, and the back half of the Jormag/Primordus LWS, because I can only do so many dragon strike missions and maintain my sanity; Lyre, who uses that hilariously broken pistol/pistol deadeye build, is working on HOPE; and Foxglove is "working" on the PVP track for the Glorious Brigandine skin, which I want for Fray. By "working" I of course mean sit in custom arenas that just let people get their dailies.
While doing all this I'd also like to start picking at their stories again. Lyre and Foxglove both have had their stories fully overhauled at least twice each, and I'm about to do it a third time. Most of the core background beats are the same for both, but the in-game timelines need some shaking up as I talk with my partners to integrate our characters' stories. Fray is also involved in this, but as an external OC brought in, I've had to find ways to translate his usual themes, motifs, and arcs into Tyria.

I always play through the story in GW2, even though I don't think all that much of it most of the time, and sometimes I'll skip over something for a while if it gets too mind-numbing or irritating. (I got so sick of Braham during A Crack in the Ice.) I'm not sure why. I think they tend to have strong ideas and sometimes they have interesting or novel execution, and this tends to improve as the story goes on. There's also the fact many things are gated behind the story, like easy map access and mastery tracks. I have no strong opinion on this. It's fine.
As someone who has a low grinding tolerance I think the story also helps to keep me engaged. I'm currently just starting to fight titans in the Janthir story and seeing where ANet has taken their threat sources from after EoD has been interesting enough. I like the idea of bringing titans into play, though as Dagonet says in one of the Alliance meetings, it's certainly odd how many new threats are showing up post-dragons. Obviously this is because they need that antagonist force, but I'm sure we'll get an in universe explanation as well.
My partner critiqued that much of the story now just seems to be "remember this from way back when?" which I can understand. It's been somewhat annoying to me as someone who goes through long gaps between playing and has a poor memory. Zojja's wizard storyline was really interesting, but was undercut because I had forgotten she had kind of disappeared, and didn't really look at her much after its conclusion. I'm a nut for voluntary memory loss storylines and the fact this didn't clothesline me is a real shame.
Janthir itself is beautiful. It reminds me a bit of Ascalon and particularly Drizzlewood, which I'm both nostalgic for and genuinely find to be some of the loveliest art direction in the game. The lowland kodan are pretty interesting and I like the warclaw a lot more with the journeykin lore behind it. I've not yet dove much into house decorating but I'm looking forward to it.

HOPE is a second-gen legendary, much like the only other legendary I've crafted, Astralaria. I really like the gen 2 ones because they actually lead you through things that make sense for such an allegedly powerful and rare weapon. Doing astronomy tasks for the axe was fun, and I really like collections that require you to properly explore and engage with the game. That said, I kind of wish it was entirely limited to PvE tasks. I'm currently stuck on a step that requires me to do a low-level fractal, and as someone with a full time job and not much time to play it's frustrating to have my preferred play style (zerging and open world) taken away from me. I don't like being gated behind "can you get four other people willing to do the same thing at the same time?". But it is what it is, and HOPE is a legendary. I can also understand asking the player to engage with all aspects of the game for it.

PVP intimidates me. I do not like it and I always feel like a burden on the team, because I don't know my rotations very well and I tend to lack situational awareness. It's much easier to just sit in a daily arena and just do something else for a while, but that's hardly playing the game. I tried a real game with Fray, but the sustain I've enjoyed so much with that build in PvE seems to be nothing in front of another player. I may try it again with Lyre, as I have some memories of sneaking around stealthed and back capping points long, long ago. I have no plans of getting good.
It does irritate me that, again, the skin I want is exclusive to game modes I don't enjoy. I wish wvw and pvp shared their reward tracks, but they deserve to have special items too. It's definitely a point of pride to have a rare item from a game mode you're really good at and I wouldn't want to remove that aspect from an MMO.

Story-wise:
- Fray is a sylvari targeted by Jormag, who pretends to be the voice of his Wyld Hunt. He's the third or fourth one they've tried this with; the others died on their "quest," which is to take a sword that was used by a fallen Pact lieutenant to kill an icebrood champion. He travels for a few years in preparation for this quest, training his combat ability, alongside my partner's charr bard. Later, another or my partner's characters, Marco, is sent to stop him in the midst of Marco's own jormag-fueled doubts about what the Pact is doing. Ultimately Fray takes the weapon but turns against Jormag up on realizing he's been manipulated, but only with Marco's help to realize he's been lied to all this time. He then becomes a soldier under Marco's command, and things are a bit wobbly from there.
- Lyre followed the personal story as an Ash charr joining the Order, with Tybalt for a mentor. She eventually becomes a Lightbringer and is heavily wounded during the fight in Maguuma, leading her to be out of action until around the end of End of Dragons or thereabouts. She's brought out of retirement when the kryptis become a problem, roughed up but good to go. She's also a soldier adjacent to or beneath Marco, not sure yet.
- Foxglove is the least developed. He's a second- or third-generation sylvari, and for a time worker as a ranger in Orr. A magical incident resulted in his pet, along with the bodies of several of animals and humanoids, being merged into a single necrotic entity that he names Iomadh. Feeling responsible, Fox cares for this creature in secret and with resentment for many years before ultimately accepting that he's a necromancer now, not a ranger. He joins the Vigil, and the flavor of his mounts and minions is meant to be that they're all Iomadh, who can sculpt itself into various undead forms. Im not sure what the caralyst of his change of heart is, and I'm not sure why he joins the Vigil. Im not even sure what if any relation he has to my other toons. I really, really like him, though, and I want to use him more.

I'll have you all know this screenshot was much more impressive when the only modes of transportation were running, jumping, and portals. It was my wallpaper for a long time.
It was a really formative memory for me as a new player, actually. A complete stranger got my attention at a random part of the city and proceeded to lead me through a hole in the map, ultimately putting us on top of the then-inaccessible roof of the Divinity's Reach bank. We chatted a little and they just said they enjoyed finding this type of thing. It's really the most magical thing about MMOs to me, encountering a real human person committing to finding things like this!
