Living a blessed life. This beautiful garden, Hilltop Gardens, is just a half an hour drive from home, and so worth it. Praise our Father in heaven for His beautiful creations.
Still falling short...
There are moments when I think I'm making real progress, in terms of obeying the Heavenly Father's law and abiding by the teachings of his son, the Messiah. There are moments when I fall short of these goals. And there are moments when I confuse these instances for lack of discernment and wisdom. This makes me fear that I'm hardening my heart each time I fall short, terrified that my prayers for repentance and forgiveness are not reaching Him because I've separated myself from Him too many times. I fear this not because I'm of the mind that my Father would forsake me; after all, He gave His only begotten son that I might have life, and have it more abundantly. I fear this because knowing the glory and love of my Father even to the tiniest degree is enough to make me turn from the path that leads me away from Him. And yet down that path I continue to walk. What I forget, and this is the purpose of this long-overdue blog entry, is that our Father does not give us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. Fear is of our enemy, the devil. My only shelter and shield from the enemy is my Father in heaven -- the King of kings, to whom I send all my fears, afflictions, debts, sins and the wickedness that causes me to sin (friendship with the world) for Him to handle. If you're beaten down and emotionally exhausted because you too fall short and fear being separated from our beloved Father, remember that as long as we earnestly seek Him out with faith made alive by works, He'll always be with us. -Michael
As a journalist in the border region of Texas, it's not uncommon to witness citizens express fears of cartel violence hitting closer to home than they're comfortable with. But there's a church in Weslaco, Texas that has taken James 1:27 to heart, and transcended that fear into an earnest calling to help a nearby Mexican orphanage whose monetary support has experienced decline over the years due to the aforementioned cartel violence.

I interviewed this man today for a feature story I'm writing. He seemed more interested in me and why I do what I do. I found myself finally conceding and sharing a bit about myself; after all, journalists ask sources and public officials to reveal all. Now I could set the example. During this brief conversation about yours truly, I noticed that many of my answers were rooted in the Father, and my wanting to be right by Him. What I didn't know was whether I was sharing as much for my Father's glory, or for my own. If you find this true for you, either in another or in similar cases, repent now and turn away from pride. Praise the Creator, our Father in Heaven, for who He is and for what He has done in your life, and not to appear Godly for stature's sake.
My sister in the Messiah shared this recently. I had to repost. Sometimes a little perspective goes a long way.
Bedtime thought
If I can easily remember the lyrics to my favorite songs but struggle to remember Bible passages, it’s time to reconsider my priorities.
Midday thought
My Father gives me strength when weak, wisdom when confounded, and intuition and discernment when apprehensive and indecisive. It’s just my decision whether I put it all to use, and for reasons that are right with Him, and not me. I have to remember that failure to do so, means failure in all I’m attempting to apply it to.

A man ministers the Word of our Father in Heaven on a subway car.
Dying to live — Pt. 1
I’m someone, like anyone, who loves to be entertained. Consider that my first love was action movies before I committed myself to mainstream music. My earliest childhood memories are of watching Die Hard and dressing like Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crüe. There’s a photo of me, somewhere, “throwing up the horns” at age 5, and even as I write this now, it’s difficult not to get side-tracked with thoughts of what new movie or music I could become obsessed with next.
Until just a few years ago, I was among the many who believed this to be harmless behavior — an innocuous fascination with guilty pleasures, if you will. But that was before a nagging feeling that I’ve always had, warning that what I valued was actually of no value, became more than just my conscience’s way of keeping me grounded. It was a voice that called out to me, and that voice belonged to my Father in Heaven.
I believe that intuition is hard-wired in all of us as a means of self-navigating the deceptive world we live in, where any wrong turn could mean spiritual and physical death, and where you constantly hear the advice “just follow your heart.” A wise man once told me that our hearts are deceitful, because we are born into wickedness and live in a world that promotes evil and sin, so following your heart, in essence, means to walk a path of destruction. And if you think back to all that our heart’s ever desired, so little of it would have actually made us better people if obtained.
Still, while I chose not to listen to my intuition before, I’m listening now, and as a result I’m slowly able to identify in me all that is not of my Father. Understand that before Him, before I began reading the Bible three years ago, what consumed me was the world. The aforementioned lusts and desires of mainstream entertainment — it led me to a dark place of greed, envy and covetousness. A slave to sin, my heart was wicked, because it was filled with the world’s lies — that what we should live for is personal joy and gratification, and not that of our Creator. As a friend once explained to me, any art form, if not rooted in Scripture, can be of the enemy. So yes, the artistry and talent exhibited and the luxuries and revelries my former heroes lived represented my initial goals, and it was their glory I sought for myself. But that person is slowly dying, and the world’s deceits with him. What I live for now is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and what I glorify now is my Heavenly Father.
This is the first of what I hope will be many posts. I don’t have an audience, and this will likely only be shared amongst friends of like-mind before I even think to share it with others. Simply call this a living testimony of a man who struggles daily with sin in a world that breeds and promotes sin as a way of life. Scripture was also not included in this my first post, because I’m not confident enough yet in my knowledge (or lack thereof) of the Bible, and fear I would mislead if used inappropriately. But do expect all that I write here in the future to be rooted in the Truth.
P.S. Below is video of a man ministering to a group of people on a subway car. He shares a great message that moved me more than any music or movie ever did. And I’ll leave you with it as a good analogy of what the world offers, and what God offers.
