I cannot believe how well people write. I want to fight them, sometimes, take away their words. I never heard of people fighting for letters, though. For black ink smudges on paper and skin, for a pattern of sound to make sense in the din.
I wanted to be a writer, I never knew why. They asked me to try, try and tell them the reason. Looking at the panel, my throat dry, eyes twitchy, something itchy, I couldnât form words. I couldnât remember my name, I didnât feel the same as I did when I entered the interview.
âI want to reach out to people, to make them see,â that was always one thing it could be. Except, I hated humans. I couldnât stand the stench of their impermanence, the reek of their egotistic conceit. It made me want to run to the hills.
Now hills, I remember so many dreams where I was stranded on a mountain, the snow clawing at my skin, no one in or around. The ground was frozen, and all of my toes and fingers were blue, but my heart flew, just like the wind. Howling, shrieking, screaming, freaking people out. But it was happy where it was.
I donât know what dreams are made of, some say itâs only what you want, some, what youâll one day get. If so, I never dream of pets or sleeping with the fear of waking up to find tears on my face, and a taste of odd hurt; the smell of MAN all over my body. And everyone knows I always wanted a dog.
Iâm easily confused at times, words jumble up and lines intertwine till one of the vines snaps and I ricochet through my fears, tears free flowing, glowing in the streetlight at night. I like taking walks alone in the dark, makes me an easy mark for snipers. In my head thatâs the worst of the lot, I try not thinking of reality.
Sitting under taps, water flowing over clothes and salt and cracks has become a habit. If I donât do that, how else will I wash myself away, fingerprints and tongues, the smell of another, âHey! No!â Itâs only natural that the swirling brown heat, slapping meat, eclipsed the mirror on the shelf, while washing away my self.
They took us for movies, in the cold outdoor theatres, and the murmurs overshadowed the actual thing. Hushed conversations still bring that back to me. In front of screens of coffins, pyres or trains, it always pains me, to not understand the words. Speak up, I scream in my head, and until I go to bed, I keep replaying the scenes, to gather some more meaning.
Maybe if I could write, I could bite down my scream, and give one for the team when ink splashed on white and trite things became life, strife ridden, hidden under flowers, blue skies, butterflies. Maybe I could save the dark alley from snipers, and lead the girl away from the piper. Save the dreams for my own head and let them sleep in beds not drenched with tears and fears and blanket forts.
I cannot believe how well people write. I want to bite, claw, fight till I gain the right to weave words like them, hem the sides off my inadequacy, and make something like art - smart, tart, complete crippling heart of jewels and feelings.
Until then, I keep scribbling.
