Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah:
Which is more deserving—to treat what Allah hates in your heart, such as envy, malice, rancor, arrogance, showing off, seeking reputation, admiring one’s own deeds, hardness of heart, and the like of filth and corruption specific to the heart?
Or busy oneself with outward deeds such as prayer, fasting, and other acts of devotion?
… Outward deeds are not righteous or accepted but by means of the heart’s action, for the heart is the king and the limbs are its soldiers.
Therefore, the deeds of the heart necessarily influence the deeds of the body. Since it comes first, it is more of an obligation.
