āIf you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day; if you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime,ā but you have done neither. You have stood before us and eaten fish after fish, and chided us for our greed as you have done so. You have cast aside their offal and simultaneously chided us for our waste. You then told us that, coincidentally, you owned the river, and our parents should have gotten us the same if we wanted fish. You gave a man a fish to murder us if we step too close to the river, or speak too loud, or eat a fish from another river. Youāve copyrighted the fishing net. It costs us fish to leave.
current thoughts while trying to be social
Ā to It would be easy to say this is āyet another example of how boomers destroyed culture,ā but it would be more apt to blame how capitalismās exploitation of baby-boomers destroyed culture. In the first couple hundred years or so of the middle classās existance, young people grew up inside an extended family and learned social roles by emulating their elders. Being a good host or hostess, and a good guest, were values that society recognized as skill-based. Hence, elders actively taught those skills and young people actively learnt them. But come along the baby boom, with an unprecedented combination of wealth and relative numbers, and corporations rushed to define aĀ āteenagerā market segment that they could profit from directly by separating their demographic off from the more stableĀ āmiddle class familyā demographic. SoĀ āteenage cultureā emerged, and they myth of theĀ āgeneration gapā, and baby boomers never learned the more sophisticated skills of being good guests and good hosts. And hence, many of those skills are only available to people who like hiding out in the HM435-HM477 sections of the library stacks. So here are two little hints from my time in the UBC main library, tested and proven over nearly half a century:
1) When you host a gathering, you have a duty of care to your guests. You have a legal duty of care to keep them reasonably safe, and you have a social duty of care to help them be reasonably comfortable. So try to greet each guest as they arrive, remember their name and something interesting about them, and --> introduce them by name to someone else at the party who might find that thing interesting too.<-- Sample script: āBill, I want you to meet Emma. She is restoring a ā65 Barracuda, similar to the one you restored.ā After your guests are mostly finished arriving, keep an eye on your guests and when one is backed into a corner behind the potted palm looking miserable, go fetch them and introduce them to someone else. Sample script:Ā āOh, Phyllis, there you are! Have you met Toby yet? Toby! You should really tell Phyllis about your pet tortoise!ā 2) When you are a guest and you get buttonholed in this way, help out your host by at least pretending to be interested in ā65 Barracudas or pet tortoises, and asking the other guest something. Ask them anything. Or if you see the guy moping behind the potted palm before your host does, approach them and ask them something. The key is, use the words āwhatā or āwhereā or āhowā to ask the question, rather than ādo/did ...?ā That way they cannot simply, desperately, answer āyesā or ānoā and have to tell you something you can build on. And donāt worry about ānot wanting to pryā. People tend to really like to talk about themselves, provided you give them leeway to decide what part of themselves to talk about. Sample script: āLucky you! How did you manage to get your hands on a ā65 Barracuda/pet tortoise?ā Or if you didnāt get a prompt from your busy host, āWhat canapĆ©s are the tastiest?ā or the old standbys Sample script: āwhat school do you go to/what are you studying/what do you do in your spare time when youāre not at a cocktail party?ā
You can actually memorize just one of these open-ended questions and use it in nearly every circumstance; and then follow up by noticing what the answer makes you curious about, and asking that. Enjoy.
I asked my kids if theyād prefer a secret garden or a secret library and my son shook his head and was like āI donāt trust the secret gardeners and librariansā
Me: what if there arenāt any gardeners or librarians.
Son: thereās always a librarian. Just because you canāt see them doesnāt mean they arenāt there. And itās a garden, there has to be someone taking care of it or it isnāt really a garden.
Me:
Me: this was supposed to be lighthearted
Daughter: donāt trust the secret librarian.
Son: any librarian who hoards a library to themselves is hiding something.
Daughter: /nods seriously/
Me: why are you two talking as if from experience should I be concerned
The kids are right Jazz
But what if I want to be the secret librarian?
Me: what if you were the secret librarian?
Son: wouldnāt be a secret library. I have nothing to hide.
Daughter: so not a secret librarian. A good librarian.
Me: you two are on a wavelength I canāt understand
What a way to find out your kids went on a whole-ass portal fantasy adventure at some point.
people with bad taste are always like āyurr hurr The Beach is about zuko and mai and how theyāre a great coupleā while intellectuals know that Actually The Beach is about mining any and all of the untapped friendship potential of this striking exchange
One of the best twist moments in Avatar is when Ty Lee suddenly and dramatically turns against Azula at the Boiling Rock. Azula was completely convinced that Ty Lee would obey her without question forever, but Azula wasnāt the only one fooled. Mai is just as shocked when Ty Lee rebels as Azula is. Ty Leeās survival instincts were so sharp that she never let anyone know what she was thinking, not Azula, not Mai, and certainly not Zuko.
Zuko really believed that Ty Lee didnāt understand who he was at all. He completely bought into the act that sheās just a puppet for Azula, who lives in her ālittle Ty Lee world where everythingās great all the timeā. But the thing is, Ty Lee is one of the most perceptive characters in the show, and sheās excellent at keeping that on the down low, but she sees a lot more of Zuko than he thinks, and a lot of what she sees is very familiar to her.
Overshadowed by prodigious siblings?
Wanting to be acknowledged for the talents you have rather than the talents you donāt?
Kept in line by fear?
Spending your whole life bending over backwards to fit the persona the royal family has set for you?
So yeah Zuko. She knows you.
This characterization is definitely emphasized with Ty Leeās acrobatics, flexibility, and ability to hit pressure points. Thereās a level of subtlety and precision that is required for such skills. She had to know her own body to be able to bend it in such ways, and she has to know other peopleās bodies to be able to disable them.
And pretty much from the moment you meet her, itās fairly clear that thereās more to her than her lighthearted, bubbleheaded persona, long before she uses her battle skills. Look at what happens when Azula recruits her.Ā
Azula used blatant intimidation tactics to get Ty Lee to comply, ordering the net to be set on fire and all the animals released (which, for the record, would not only have endangered Ty Lee but the circus creatures themselvesāI bet Ty Lee was attached to them, and that wouldāve been a double threat in itself). Ty Lee is visibly terrified, but instead of calling her out or letting Azula see that she was intimidated, she says this:
Instead of endangering herself by pointing out that Azula crossed a line, Ty Lee falls back on her talk ofĀ āthe universeā andĀ āauras,ā talk that canonically gets her indulged or dismissed but never taken seriously.Ā
She knows that Azulaās dangerous. Thereās no way she doesnāt know that Azula is threatening her. But if she can keep Azula from realizing she knows that, sheās a little safer.Ā
Because sheās one of maybeĀ two people Azula never considered as potential enemiesāeven (especially, but thatās another thread) Ozai is a threat in her mind, but Mai and Ty Lee are the closest thing Azula has to trusted friends, right up until their betrayal.Ā
Ty Leeās spent a lifetime cultivating a personality that not only allows her to stands out among her siblingsāit protects her from being treated as a threat. When youāre friends with Azula, that is an essential facade to maintain.Ā and she does it consistently enough that no one ever sees through it.
All of the Fire Nation kids are so messed up. Zukoās just the one who gets in the most trouble, because heās the only one who doesnāt have a mask.
Amazing discussion and thereās one more thing to add to it, specifically in the context of the episode with The Beach.
Azula gets jealous of the male attention that Ty Lee is getting. Itās not the same as being a threat, but it does put Ty Lee in a dangerous position because she has something Azula wants. It doesnāt take much for Azula to turn dangerous and threatening when thereās something she wants and perceives an obstacle in the way, and Ty Lee knows this. And with just a few words, a compliment to Azula, she sets her at ease and makes herself seem vapid (ājust laugh at whatever they say even if itās not funnyā) while giving advice. Which means Azula can take or leave her advice but wonāt perceive Ty Lee as a real threat to the attention she craves because Ty Lee is getting attention for ābeing vapidā and not because sheās naturally beautiful and charming.
Its a simple, efficient, and incredible manipulation of a very dangerous and volatile person. Again the agility and flexibility, and no wonder Azula didnāt see her betrayal coming. Every time Ty Lee has entered even the possibility of being a threat to Azula in any realm, sheās immediately flipped the situation to put Azula seemingly back in control and put herself back into a nonthreatening role. Right up until her betrayal.
Enkanomiyaās beginning(or āThe Serpentās Bowelsā in the map) and its beautiful shining flora~
