It’s especially plausible when you remember that Zack is a lot younger than pretty much anyone else in SOLDIER save for the big three. So like. Angeal just sees new recruit!Zack coming in, dirty and tired, from doing grunt work along side a bunch of other older new recruits and is just like “That is the cutest goddess-damned kid I've ever seen. I love him and he's my son now.”
He just immediately starts hovering and checking for injuries and herds Zack back to his residence to feed him actual food and not like. Whatever abomination you know ShinRa cafeteria food would be, and doesn’t explain jack shit to Sephiroth or Genesis the entire time.
(To make it even more interesting: While ‘Geal is helicoptering, people are just like gawking at one of The holy trinity giving them the time of day — meanwhile Zack has not even the foggiest fucking clue who Angeal is other than a really nice SOLDIER offering up real food. Like. Even asks Angeal for his name and is just gloriously irreverent and informal with him while everyone around them is just guffawing by that point — when they leave the rumor get started almost immediately that Zack Fair is about to get the reprimand of a lifetime/is going to run laps until he dies.
Angeal finds it kind of refreshing to be called by his name by someone other than like Genesis or Sephiroth or his mom and is amused at the kid not recognizing him.)
I love having writer friends because I can say ‘I have 2 hours I can write in! I might get a draft finished!’
Then when they ask 2 hours later how I’m getting on I can admit that I wrote a scene that was supposed to be funny but I was in the Zone of just writing straight out what dialogue feels right and I wrote a line then stopped, reread it, realised that particular line hits hard enough that I’ve just hurt myself and cried for twenty minutes straight.
Their response was “I love it when something I write makes me cry, it means I’m going to hurt my readers SO MUCH MORE” and like isn’t that what fic writing is all about?
Real talk though - Zack’s reaction to Cloud’s mako coma in jbswm (idk know how id’d explain it: quiet, confused, shocked, numb?) CUT ME DEEP. I had to stop to process it all and then have a good cry before starting again.
Don’t get discouraged if sometimes the ideas in your mind don’t come out the way you want them to. You’re doing great, bud, and it’s pretty fabulous how you paint pictures with your words, even if your mountains look a little more like hills! Keep on going, you’re doing great my dude.
