Momo Misconceptions
For the longest time, Momo has been one of the more scrutinized figures in My Hero Academia. While no one seems to really hate her, she does seem to create a lot of opinions. Whether that be her character, her Quirk, and especially her costume, many fans have voiced their dislike for how she has been handled or how they think she should be a certain way. So I thought I would address at least some of the more prevalent issues people have with her with my own arguments and reasoning. I would bring up her costume, but I already discussed that at length in Duds and Duds series, both in her own Duds and Duds and in the Second Cut.
Why doesn’t she build up fat?
The whole deal with Momo’s Quirk can be boiled down to this: Momo burns through fat faster than her body can make it. Whenever she eats and makes fats, she uses them for fuel or for her Quirk, meaning that there isn’t much chance for her to gain weight in any meaningful way. She’s similar to an athlete. Yes, certain athletes eat more than the average person, but that is only because they regularly do more strenuous activities and need to fuel their body which is then burned through when they do exercise. She’s like the Flash in that way. Yes, both of their abilities rely heavily on what they eat, but they just burn through it so fast that they don’t have to worry about gaining excess fat.
And I have heard some people say that it could work as a reserve, but I don’t think that would be good either. Momo needs fats, but she doesn’t need to BE fat. She and her Quirk work perfectly fine without her going over her healthy weight limit. If anything, Momo would be hindered by being fat consistently, as that would harm her ability to do physical activity. Heroes need to keep themselves physically fit to do the kind of job they do, similar to military personnel, as being unhealthy would hamper their ability to work. The exception to this would be Fat Gum. Fat Gum is someone who needs to be fat, as how well his Quirk functions is based around how large he is and he doesn’t seem to be that hampered by it, likely as result of his Quirk. Even if that wasn’t the case, having more fat on her body would, at best, a crutch. If anything, Momo needs to learn to use her fat better, not have more fat to use.
Why doesn’t she work with Fat Gum?
I honestly think that is not the best place for Momo. The first thing I’ve heard people bring up is that it would be a good place for Momo to train her Quirk, but I don’t think that is the case. The most they have in common is that their Quirk requires them to eat more than normal, which I still see people say but is a flimsy connection at best. But the main thing is the character’s differences in roles. Fat Gum is meant to be in the frontlines, tanking hits and capturing villains. It’s why Kirishima was so good with Fat Gum, as Kirishima is a natural fit for the same role that Fat Gum plays. But Momo’s Quirk and abilities makes her better suited to a supportive role, making equipment and plans to best counter an opponent. Momo needs to be with someone who will help her train her natural leadership abilities and intelligence, such as Nezu if he was a working hero. The most she could learn from Fat Gum is how to eat a lot without vomiting.
There has also been the argument that Momo needs to be with Fat Gum because of her confidence issues, like what he did with Tamaki. That may have been true back during the sports festival and the exams, but Momo has gotten much better since then. After her fight with Aizawa, she is confident again, able trust in her own abilities and taking a defeat without becoming an anxiety ridden mess like she was after her fight with Tokoyami. Unlike Tamaki, who can barely speak to people he doesn’t know, who most certainly needed the kind of comfort and confidence that came from being Fatgum’s sidekick. And it is honestly more insulting to her character and the growth she has gone through to suggests that she would need something to boost her self-esteem.
Momo is wasting her Quirk/Why doesn’t Momo make X?
This is a sentiment I don’t agree with. In fact, I would dare even say that no one could use Momo’s Quirk as well as Momo can. “Creation” is such a multi-purpose Quirk, that it’s almost impossible to waste. But Momo is probably one of the only characters smart enough to really take advantage of it. The only real difference is that Momo is acting in more of a supportive role, which isn’t a bad thing. That is something that fits her overall “kit” as a hero. She’s very smart and has talent as a leader, staying in the back in order to make plans and provide materials on the spot. Which leads to the other issue of why Momo doesn’t make certain items like a gun.
I think this comes from a misunderstanding of the issues related to Momo’s Quirk, and that is the limitations of fats her Quirk has. We’ve seen Momo make very simple items. A bo staff, a blanket, a machete. The most advanced stuff we’ve seen her make is a cannon and the tracker. So it may just be that trying to make more complex items would take more fat to make due to their various components and trying to make them would just be a waste. The cannon, while big, is a very simple weapon that only requires a few parts to it, so Momo can make it easily. But the tracking device, while small, is extremely complex, so that is why Momo faints after using it after everything else. So yes, Momo could try to make a mini-nuke, but it would probably kill her before she was even a tenth of the way done.
do you have any tips for writing mermaids? i love your work ^-^
How to Write Mermaids
-> Things to Think About and Consider When Writing Merpeople and Mer Fiction
-> How to Write a Mermaid (anc writing resources)
These are just some suggestions! Feel free to pick and choose based on what best fits your story.
Physical Appearance
Tail Variations: Instead of a uniform tail type, consider different adaptations: sleek, dolphin-like tails for fast swimmers; large, strong tails with iridescent scales for deep-sea mermaids; or frilled, flowing fins like a lionfish for camouflage. Some might have tails resembling eels or sharks, giving them a menacing or streamlined look.
Scales and Coloration: In deep-sea areas, mermaids might have dark, bioluminescent scales with patterns that mimic the stars or the sea floor. Shallow-water mermaids might have brighter, coral-like colors to blend in.
Scars and Symbols: Scars from battles with sea creatures, markings from coral, or even bioluminescent tattoos could add depth.
Eyes Adapted to the Ocean: Mermaids’ eyes might be unusually large, with reflective layers to enhance night vision. They could have vertical pupils like a cat’s or even multiple layers of eyelids, including a transparent one to protect them from salt and silt.
Webbed Hands and Clawed Fingers: Webbed hands would enhance their swimming ability, and clawed fingers might be used for self-defense or hunting. Some might have retractable claws or spines to protect themselves from predators.
Culture
Language and Communication: Consider how sound works underwater; it travels faster and farther but differently. Maybe they use gestures, a sign language, or even musical calls to communicate. Their language might be melodic or full of trills and hums that are difficult for land creatures to understand.
Beliefs and Myths: Mermaids would likely have their own stories, rituals, and superstitions. Maybe they worship ocean gods, the moon, or view shipwrecks as holy places. They might believe in omens from ocean currents, the arrival of rare sea creatures, or changes in the tides.
Social Structure: Decide if they live in schools, pods, or solitary. A royal family, councils of elders, or a group of shamans could govern them. Do they form alliances or rivalries with other sea creatures or even human sailors?
Hierarchy and Elders: Older mermaids or those with powerful magical abilities may hold significant respect and authority. These elders could be responsible for rituals, storytelling, and maintaining the balance of magic within their community.
Seasonal Gatherings and Ceremonies: The ocean has its own rhythms—tides, moon phases, migrations—and mermaids might gather for ceremonies tied to these events. For instance, they could honor the arrival of certain fish schools or perform rituals under a full moon for strength and unity.
Jewelry and Artifacts: Mermaids might decorate themselves with jewelry made of shells, coral, pearls, and items retrieved from shipwrecks. Certain pieces may symbolize rank, magical prowess, or family lineage, with specific stones or materials believed to channel energy.
Tattooing and Body Art: Many mermaids may tattoo themselves with ink made from squid or octopus, using markings that indicate status, clan, or achievements. Bioluminescent tattoos or body paint could glow at night or during important rituals.
Magical Abilities
Special Senses: Consider heightened senses, like echolocation, the ability to detect changes in water temperature, or a heightened sense of smell for tracking prey or sensing danger. These would add to their unique oceanic identity and give them a slight advantage over surface dwellers.
Control over Water and Weather: Some mermaids can call storms, manipulate tides, or create currents. This might be a rare gift, often feared for its destructive potential. Using such magic could leave them physically or mentally drained.
Healing and Transformation: Certain mermaids could have powers to heal wounds or diseases with seawater, or transform sea creatures into protective spirits. However, each healing might weaken them temporarily or require offerings to the ocean in return.
Song and Illusion: Siren song is a classic power; mermaids could enchant, hypnotize, or create illusions through melody. Overuse might leave them voiceless or mentally scarred, with some even risking losing themselves to the song forever.
Shape-Shifting: For those able to take human form, transformation might come at a great personal cost. Perhaps they can only transform for a limited time, or their time on land drains their magic, forcing them to return to the water to recover.
Physical Depletion: Magic use might be physically taxing, aging a mermaid slightly or sapping their strength. Frequent magic use could make them appear older or leave permanent marks on their body, like scars or discolored scales.
Price of Blood or Offering: Magic might demand a price—whether in the form of a personal sacrifice or a blood offering to the ocean. For powerful spells, mermaids may even need to leave behind something they value, such as memories, emotions, or treasured artifacts.
Risk of Transformation: High-level magic could alter a mermaid’s physical form temporarily or permanently. They might grow extra fins, become partially transparent, or even lose their voice after certain spells.
Mental Toll and "Ocean Madness": Overuse of magic could lead to a condition known as "Ocean Madness," a state in which mermaids lose touch with reality, becoming isolated or forgetting their own identity. This is particularly feared among mermaids, as it might mean permanent exile or being lost to the ocean.
Forbidden or Dark Magic: Some magic forms might be considered taboo or forbidden due to their dangerous nature. Practicing dark magic, like curses or soul-binding, could bring severe consequences, both in physical tolls and social exile.
Character Motivation and Conflict
Relationship with Humans: Decide whether mermaids are fascinated by or wary of humans. Some might be drawn to them out of curiosity or romantic allure, while others might distrust them due to pollution, fishing, or old tales of betrayal. Their interactions with humans can reveal a lot about their personality and worldview.
Desire for Land or Home: Consider what might tempt a mermaid to leave their watery home. Do they long to experience human life, seek revenge for an oceanic wrong, or retrieve a lost artifact from a shipwreck? This longing could add depth to their character.
Struggles with Transformation: If your mermaids can shift between human and mermaid forms, consider how this affects their identity and relationships. Transformation could be painful, rare, or come at a high price, adding dramatic tension and giving their character arc extra weight.
Quest for Authority: In a hierarchical society, some mermaids might crave power or authority, seeking to rise through the ranks or challenge an elder. Such ambition could lead them to take risks, learn forbidden magic, or ally with powerful sea creatures.
Personal Pride or Legacy: Some mermaids might want to establish themselves as legends, known for feats of bravery or wisdom. This could involve dangerous quests to recover lost artifacts, hunt rare sea creatures, or explore dangerous parts of the ocean. Their pursuit of legacy might set them at odds with their peers, especially if it leads to recklessness.
Torn Between Worlds: A mermaid who can transform and walk on land might struggle with a dual identity. If spending time on land slowly diminishes their powers, they could grapple with the desire to stay connected to both worlds, fearing losing either part of themselves.
Conflict Between Duty and Desire: Many mermaids might feel a sense of duty to their family, tribe, or ocean gods, conflicting with their personal desires. They could be pressured to fulfill a prophecy, protect a magical artifact, or avoid contact with humans, even if it clashes with their true passions.
Past Mistakes or Betrayals: A mermaid who has broken societal rules—whether by consorting with humans, using dark magic, or violating clan boundaries—might feel guilt or face exile. Redemption could become a strong motivator, pushing them to right their wrongs, often at great risk or personal cost.
Haunted by Family Legacy: If a mermaid comes from a family of notorious outcasts, warriors, or traitors, they might struggle with the burden of redeeming their family’s name or rising above that legacy. This could lead them into difficult choices about loyalty and personal integrity.
Hunters and Captors: Humans might hunt mermaids for their scales, powers, or knowledge, forcing mermaids into hiding or guerrilla-like resistance. A character driven by a desire for vengeance against humans could lead to morally complex actions and choices.

Petition to remove tumblr’s nsfw filter
We’ve all been disappointed so many times by tumblr’s updates, and some of us have put up with them in the past, but their latest nsfw filter is, by far, the worst.
Whilst I can understand tumblr’s efforts in implementing this type of censoring system, it isn’t helpful at all, not to mention their algorithm is inaccurate and 99% of the posts that get marked as nsfw are in reality, SFW. Whereas images of nude photography aren’t even flagged as sensitive.
We don’t need an apology on what was happening/what tumblr is “working on” to improve things. What tumblr should really do, is remove this function. Because it’s been affecting nothing but innocent posts, for instance photos/gifs of people holding hands, a character’s face, etc; and it’s also affecting communities like lgbt folks and anime/animation fandoms, where anime/disney edits are getting flagged as NSFW for no logical reason.
if there are people who want to have a clean dash, by all means they could just easily turn on the safe mode on tumblr to avoid seeing [the real] sensitive posts.
I don’t think tumblr @staff understands the severity of how it’s affecting a lot of people, especially those edits/graphics makers and tumblr artists who depend on tumblr to post their work online. On top of that, the sensitive review would take days, and it’s exasperating. Instead of launching an algorithm that doesn’t work right, they shouldn’t launch it at all until and unless it works in the right way, or find other solutions that DOES NOT affect graphic makers who post their art/edits online. Rolling out such a flawed algorithm is simply unprofessional imo. Honestly we all love spending time on tumblr but please @staff fix this issue soon so that it doesn’t affect people like this.
Hey. Minors following me. Internet safety is key!! NEVER include these in your bio/byf:
Medical diagnoses - this is nobody's business but yours. You don't owe anyone an explanation for why you are the way that you are
Trauma - same reason as above
Triggers - people can use these against you! Don't give people tools to hurt you. No one has to know what tags you block. Just block tags to stay safe!
Age - age is okay for adults to include but is iffy when you're a teen. Predators want this information, don't give people more than they need. Just state that you're a minor, that's all that anyone needs to know.
In general: stay safe. If you're not comfortable with every stranger out there having access to this information, you shouldn't post it on the internet.
Play devil's advocate and ask yourself about what would happen if someone searched for your information with intent to hurt you. You do NOT owe anyone an explanation!
adding on to this post, i agree w all of OPs points, but i also highly advise against super young teens posting their face on the internet, its so easy to take peoples selfies + name and find stuff out like your school and then figure out the rough area in which you live. same with your phone number. be super careful about what you put out there. once you post it, it really is here forever.
OP already said this so I’m just reiterating to emphasize:
The golden rule of information sharing on the internet is: What would happen if someone saw this who wanted to hurt me?
If the answer is that it would make it easier to harass you, identify you, contact you, or god forbid find you, don’t put it online. You can’t fully control who does and does not see that information--not even with privacy settings.

🎀 happy birthday to marilyn monroe ♡
june 1st, 1926
i know everyone always posts her photos and calls her an icon (which she is), but i think people forget how soft she was. how deeply she felt things. how much she just wanted to be taken seriously, to be loved for who she really was underneath all the glam and gloss and camera flashes.
marilyn was the kind of girl who read poetry in bed and wrote in her diary and had so many dreams people couldn’t even begin to understand. she made being feminine look like power. and she taught me that it’s okay to be delicate and driven. to be a little sad and still shine. to be beautiful but also broken in places.
she’s one of the first girls i ever saw who was both adored and misunderstood. and that always stuck with me.
so today, in her honor: wear the perfume. curl your lashes. read something romantic. believe that being soft doesn’t make you weak. and please don’t let anyone tell you that you’re “just a pretty face.” marilyn wasn’t. and neither are you.
💋🕯️ happy birthday marilyn. you changed everything for girls like us.
an angels guide: my ideal summer morning routine ˚ʚɞ。⋆
hi angels! it’s finally starting to feel like summer, my exams are almost done and the suns shining practically everyday. summer is the perfect time of year to work on yourself, the days are longer, it’s easier to be outside and everything feels so much brighter and more optimistic. with that in mind here is my ideal summer routine! for me this is perfect when i have the time and energy - not every day looks like this but i try and incorporate aspects of this routine as much as possible when time doesn’t permit me to do the entire thing. hopefully it gives you some inspiration and guidance for your own routine!
wake up and open the curtains and my windows. let as much natural light in and feel the warmth of the day on my skin.
drink a glass of water as i sit and look outside, do some deep breathing and feel the possibilities in this new day.
do five to ten minutes of yoga and stretching (id be happy to do a list of my favourite youtubers/routines!).
do ten minutes of gentle pilates, just to help me feel more awake and ready for the day. getting my body moving first thing helps me feel so alive.
make my bed and tidy anything in my room that’s messy or needs sorting. dress in something cute and summery that helps me feel prepared for the day ahead. i love to wear jewellery or little accessories even when i dont have much planned just to remind myself that every day is special.
brush my teeth and gently wash my face with some cool water to help depuff it and wake me up.
pick my book of the day - especially in the summer when i have more time for pleasure reading i like to read a book a day!
make a delicious summer breakfast. my favourites tend to be a yogurt bowl with fruits, coconut and almond flakes and puffed oats, chia seed pudding/overnight oats or a beautiful smoothie bowl. i aim for at least five different fruits/veggies in summer, i want my breakfasts to be as varied and colourful as possible while being wonderfully nutritious! if possible i eat my meals outside in the summer especially first thing.
fill up my water bottle and make a cup of herbal tea. i always drink tea after eating to help me digest and for all the other benefits. my favourites in the summer tend to be either a green tea, a raspberry hibiscus and strawberry tea (my current fave) or a peach tea!
clean teeth again, mouthwash and use my water flosser to help my mouth feel as clean as possible.
do skincare and bodycare. i use a thick lotion on my body twice a day, wait a little then spray perfume as well as applying suncream on my face always and on my body depending on the UV/my activities for the day.
spend fifteen or twenty minutes journalling and using my hands to write down my feelings, mood or any other journal prompt.
read a little of my book, try and be as thoughtful as possible and really absorb the meaning. treasure what a gift literature is.
go on a little walk! i like to aim for twenty minutes, just something short and brief but allows me to spend some time outside and really moving my body.
do something with my hands. bake something, write something, craft something, anything that requires me to focus and engage in a hobby. im always in the process of creating something and im guilty of having hundreds of half finished projects - hoping to finish some this summer!
prepare and plan for the day ahead. write my to do list, organise things with friends or for myself and get ready to enjoy the rest of my day having spent a delightful summer morning caring for my body and soul.
thank you for reading angels! hope you enjoyed, summer is such a brilliant time of year to prioritise yourself, your needs and develop new hobbies and skills. this routine reminds me to treasure it and take the time to appreciate it before it slips away for the rest of the year. hopefully this time of year is treating you all wonderfully! to anyone who has exams, take a deep breath, drink some water and remind yourself that you can and will get through this.
from, m.
