The implication is that Will's only possible happy ending would be dating Mike because Mike, having lived as a straight man, is therefore "pure" and "less risky" than all those other gross gay men Will would be meeting in NYC. It is putting the straight guy in a pedestal and idolizing Will's repressed childhood while framing his adulthood as a happy, out gay man as inherently tainted. The fantasy of a gay romance completely removed from gay culture and experiences is framed as the superior form of "representation." When people say bylr shippers can be homophobic, this is what they're talking about.

You can hate the epilogue all you want, but you should realize that when you post those complaints about how “they put him in a gay bar!!!!” you are implying that one of the few safe queer spaces at the time is dirty and immoral.
