upside-down
Regarding the discussion about the number of people present during Will's coming out, I think people have a right to dislike it. But that number made sense. Especially when you look at the series as a whole, because it's clear that the show is about a group of people in which everyone is an outcast and marginalized in some way. Will knew everyone who was there during his coming out very well, and they all share an incredible friendship. The fact that he came out and everyone accepted him and showed him they wouldn't look at him differently because of his sexual orientation, that it didn't change anything, that they are still friends, is wonderful. Meanwhile, people act like they want to see someone reject him. I have a feeling some people would even like to see someone being homophobic towards him, which, while it might be historically based, I consider cruel. I definitely wouldn't want to see anyone being homophobic towards him. If someone wanted to see Will suffer because "it's the '80s", I think it's very strange . Was anyone in their group of friends racist towards Lucas? No. Was anyone in their friend group ableist towards Dustin? No. Was anyone in their friend group misogynistic towards Max? No. Was anyone in their friend group mean to El because she had powers? No. So why would anyone be homophobic towards Will?
Most of these characters fought tooth and nail to find Will in s1. The Upside Down itself is often interpreted as a metaphor for trauma, isolation, closet or even living in a homophobic town. Will is stuck there!!! In e1, Joyce implies he was bullied for being perceived as gay, we hear Troy’s comments, Will describes where he is as “like home, but dark,” Joyce can’t see him when he says “right here” and so on…..Love, hope, and the people who refuse to give up on Will bring him home. So is it really that crazy to think s5 is doing something similar, just more literally? I might not be explaining it perfectly, but the idea is that the story has already shown acceptance of Will in a metaphorical sense (s1), and s5 just makes some of that subtext text. Soooo why would they suddenly be homophobic?
I don't really understand why people say Will Byers is a bad representation or that he wasn't handled well. I completely disagree. His story is complex and beautiful. He's a character who exemplifies what a gay teenager faced in the 1980s in a small town in the US. His story is filled with suffering; it's a story about growing up, gaining self-confidence, fear, trauma, friendship, overcoming fears, self-acceptance, and ultimately, happiness and love. I think his story is incredibly powerful. It's even weirder when someone writes that he was a good representation before Season 5 Volume 2. What? So just because he didn't end up with Mike mean he's a bad representation? Or maybe it's because he came out? Does that mean he's a bad representation? I agree that he deserved an even better ending, even more, but WILL BYERS IS A GOOD REPRESENTATION AND HIS STORYLINE WAS NOT HANDLED TERRIBLE.
I understand that byler wasn't endgame, and everyone has the right to feel disappointed by that, but (and I say this as someone who believed in byler from 2022 until the credits rolled in the final episode, and then believed in conformitygate and shipped Byler until a certain point in January), let's stop saying that the problem is how Will's character was written. The real problem was how Mike's character and his story were written.
What is your opinion on this?
Hello 💗 sorry for the late reply, anon
There’s a lot to criticize about how Will’s story was handled, but we’re soooooo lucky that this character exists 🤍 If people stopped obsessing over Mike’s nonexistent queer arc and realized that it’s actually healthy for Will to move on, the conversation would be way more productive. But 🤷🏻♀️
being in a fandom long term: urrrrrrrrrrgh not this shitty argument again we’ve covered this

People think that just because Finn is skinny and Noah isn’t particularly skinny that he’s somehow the bigger one when Finn is just generally huge in stature. Like have you seen the size of his hands??
They’re ignoring s5 Mike and just keep thinking about long-haired s4 Mike + Finn’s photoshoot pics 🤷🏻♀️

them claiming will has “noticeable muscle” is so funny when mike is like, significantly taller and broader than him in almost all of their scenes together. the only scenes where they look similar in size are the ones in the first couple episodes where they’re both wearing bulky oversized jackets.
You’re right, dear anon 🫶🏼
“he has visible muscles!!!!!!!!!!!!fjdhd”

Season three Will Byers makes me so emotional in such a deeply personal way. If you insult season three Will Byers you insult me. If you hate season three Will Byers you hate me.
His bunny teeth. His cutesy long bouncy mushroom bob. The adorable way he walks and makes everyone else do manual labor for him. His imagination. My baby.
will finding himself in very close proximity to his crush (maybe in a group setting and without meaning to 😵💫), enjoying them almostttt brushing against each other and having to crane his neck a bit to talk. which is also difficult because he wants to look at his face up right there and it’s overwhelming and very nice. wowwwwww
