Being away from you for so long made me realize that I can live without you, but seeing you after having been away from you made me realize that I hope I never have to.

I need you to promise me one thing, no matter what. When we’re happy and when we’re fighting. Even if we decide to be together forever. I don’t need extravagant gestures or expensive gifts or fancy words. There’s only one thing I need you to promise me. When I’m sad, when you’re sad, when I say I’m going to leave, and if I actually leave. No matter how in love with each other we are, when we’re so comfortable with each other we feel like the same person. I still need you to promise me one thing. Promise me you’ll never stop trying.

I’m imagining a day, 10 years from now. I wake up and see you sleeping next to me. I go into the kitchen quietly without waking you and I start making coffee and I sit at the kitchen table. And eventually, I feel you come up behind me and wrap your arms around me and kiss me on the cheek and you grab my coffee and I just smile. I’m happy because I realize I could be doing anything or I could be doing nothing but just having you there would make me smile.

You need someone who wants to be there when it’s messy and when it’s hard, not just when it’s fun and when it’s convenient. And you need someone who chooses you when it might not be the easiest choice. And you need someone who would rather do nothing with you than anything in the world with someone else.

Talk to me. Tell me about how much fun you had yesterday, the joke that made you laugh until you cried, the dumb thing you're too embarrassed to tell anyone else.. Talk for hours about the things you love because there is nothing I'd rather be doing than listening.

Because then, no matter what, there’s something that you’ll always still have, that will always be just yours. Inside jokes with yourself, secret places that you never take anyone. This keeps you sane and this keeps you real and this ensures that the most important person in your life will always be yourself.
