It took him a moment to process who – or rather what – the man was talking about. That however was a line of inquiry that took the backseat to the dull pain that arced through his body as he stumbled. A sharp exhale hissed between clenched teeth and in the moment after his mind made the connection. Buttons was the horse. As quickly as the information came it was discarded as unimportant. “Last time I touch a fucking horse,” he grunted as he attempted to right himself. Instead another throb of pain nearly doubled him. The tiny hand clasped in his however kept him standing by nothing other than sheer willpower. His panicked mind flitted through different methods to alleviate the pain before he settled on focusing his breathing.
With each deep breath his thoughts calmed. Rithisak managed to bring himself close enough to the thicker tree and leaned back against its support. At that exact moment his stomach took the opportunity to heave but he swallowed it down. He stared at the man opposite them with eyes glazed in wet tears of pain but his expression was a man aware. It was one of distrust. If it was up to him he’d rather risk it. It wasn’t that he didn’t want somewhere like what the man spoke of but that he didn’t exactly have the room in his head to consider it. His eyes flitted down to where Aiden stood clinging to his hand. He squeezed that hand before righting himself and coming close enough to take the photos and the container of apple sauce in one hand. Aiden would have been too young to remember a time he had ever had apple sauce.
He paused as his hand brushed the jar before at the last second taking only the photos. “You eat some of it first,” he ordered. He waited for the instruction to be followed before giving his attention to the photographs. It was like flipping through a silent movie of another era though he knew all this had once been his own life. Pristine and quaint: nothing like anything the world had become. It was all that he had wanted for his sons; he didn’t trust it. “You know that saying about how if something seems too good to be true? I get that vibe here.” He flipped one of the photographs to show the man. Then these he pocketed before frisking the male. The range of movement had him gritting his teeth but it was well worth it to find nothing on him. “You know the only people that come out here without weapons are the dead ones.”
Aaron watched the male closely, he couldn’t show any signs of fear or distrust since it would only make his reputation worse with him. He looked at the way he eyed the food and the photographs knowing from the expression on his face it wasn’t enough to convince him. Aaron kept a professional expression until the man ordered him to eat some of the apple sauce and disgust flashed across his face. Shaking his head he gulped.
“I can’t, it’s not because it’s poisoned or anything I would never harm anyone I just--” there was no point in lying. “I was forced to eat apple sauce when I came out to my mom because she thought it would make me manlier,” Aaron couldn’t take his eye off of the bottle. The only thing that brought him back to the present and his gaze to the male was when he questioned the pictures. “It’s not a --” he was taken by surprise by the frisk and couldn’t finish his thought.
“I have one person with me, he watches over me but a lot of the walkers around here are mostly gone,” Aaron looked around him. “I also have been in the business of dangerous people long enough to avoid situations with weapons--we didn’t get those in Africa, so we don’t need them now,” he tried his hardest to avoid the apple sauce and the idea of having his pictures gone made him uncomfortable as well.
“I…helped people. I’m still trying to.” It was a simplified truth, one she felt better answered his query in the moment. And thanks to her cousin’s early attempts to keep her more extraordinary traits under wraps, there were nary any noteworthy incidents to attribute herself to.
But she knew he wanted a clearer answer. And thankfully, the truth was all that was needed. “I’d consult for several government organisations. Places most have never even heard of.”
“Government? I used to work for them too until I joined an NGO,” Aaron hoped it made her feel more comfortable, he was happy to see her open up.
“Hopefully it wasn’t anything illegal. Have you had to kill people? Um--not for the government, but now,” he smiled sheepishly.

“um--I’m sorry I have a boyfriend who probably wouldn’t be too happy about that.”
