Pirate flag at the Åland Maritime Museum, one of two pirate flags that are considered authentic. The flag is about 200 years old and came to Åland from the North African Mediterranean coast, where piracy occurred right into the 19th century. It is made of cotton and was once dark brown. Now it is faded by the ravages of time, weather and wind.

A new satirical statue attributed to Banksy appears in Waterloo Place in London, England. The sculpture depicts a person in a suit marching forward off a plinth while their face is completely covered by a large, billowing flag. It is located near the Athenaeum Club and the Crimean War Memorial. | April 29, 2026 | Martin Pope | #GettyImages

Colors that you can connect with national sentiment often form the subject of Willem de Rooij's research on image and meaning. This is how he referred to the color orange in a work. Orange stands for the Netherlands because the color belongs to the royal house. But orange is also the color of clothing worn by political prisoners in Guantánamo Bay, the disputed American detention center in Cuba. So it depends on who 'reads' the color and in what context it happens. Red-white-blue, the Dutch tricolor, also refers to feelings of national attachment. In a society where inequality and exclusion are at the center of the debate, some, however, wonder who the national tricolor is actually waving at. The Red, with its 'Negative Flag', refers to the current moment, in which social and political relations are being minted again. He has turned the red-white-blue into photographic color negative with a reverse version of the Dutch flag as a result. The Red characterizes the image itself as "a nostalgic representation of a symbol of nostalgia. ”

Stefano Calligaro is an Italian visual artist based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. His heterogeneous work plays into play a host of strategies that question with irony and anarchic sensitivity the essence of art and the artist’s role in contemporary society. His current textual work ("Poatry," as he likes to call it) made of textual "Poetricks", "Poetrickal-materializations," and "Self-portraits" challenges established social and cultural codes through visual simplicity and the (meta)use of language. Posters, books, flyers, balloons, postcards, and other ephemeral printed material and wallpaint installations are the vehicles used to convey Stephen's verbal defects to the world and welcome the viewer into a new mallable territory made to be explored. The attempt to engage the viewer in an active enjoyment of the artwork is evident in Calligaro's Poetrickal-materializations (literal print versions of Digital Poetricks) where the physical artwork itself is "materialized" in collaboration with other people such as art publishers, galleries, independent art spaces, collectors, institutions, or simply art enthusiasts. art ai which are entrusted with the task of producing and distributing, without specific instructions given by the artist, the physical work itself. Each "poetic materialization" therefore assumes an innumerable variety of forms and directions, making the digital Poetry of Stefano eclectic and tangible. This participatory quality of the work not only helps to demystify the importance of the artist, but also allows Stefan to explore new visual and conceptual territories by freely questioning the essence of art in a society that constantly provides us with cultural and intellectual models to follow.
