There seem to be a lot of people who donβt understand why Lobo was in the movie, so Iβm just gonna say it: Lobo is who Kara is at risk of becoming.
Kara is at a crossroads, and one road leads towards Clark and one leads to Lobo. Or rather, one path leads to embracing the responsibility of the life and powers her parents gave her, and the other is continuing to drink her life away, not caring about anything or anyone but her and hers.
Lobo is immensely powerful, and the last of his planet. Just like Kara. And when we meet him, heβs passed out drunk in a bar, oblivious and uncaring of violence and exploitation around him. Just like Kara was trying to be when she first met Ruthye.
Lobo is Karaβs future if she gives up on trying to be good. Drunkenly stumbling through the galaxy not helping anyone or anything and only caring about herself. Maybe not mindlessly cruel, but not kind or good or caring of the pain of the people around her.
Itβs why they both get Ruthyeβs spiel, itβs why Loboβs whole introduction mirrors what Kara was just doing demanding to know about the Brigands, itβs why theyβre both βthe ditz from the barβ, itβs why they both have the gag with the space suit collar.
Itβs why Lobo crops up each time Ruthye and Kara are faced with choices, sometimes acting as a devil on their shoulders, sometimes just a big lurking ominous warning of their bleak future if they make the wrong choices. Itβs why Lobo says βlet Ruthye have her revengeβ, uncaring of how the violence might haunt Ruthye for the rest of her life. Heβs a big constant reminder why Kara cannot let this thirteen year old girl be consumed by violence, and of who her parents didnβt want her to be.
Lobo is Karaβs foil and shadow.
I donβt think the movie always executed this well, it could have been done better, but I donβt think it was subtle either. The parallels between Kara and Lobo are right there in every scene and always highlight the choices Kara makes to be kind, and I do wish people would take the time to actually think about them before writing Loboβs presence off.
So sorry for how long i took but I'm back!

Forgot to post this new artwork here, but disclaimer first:
this is just something l've learned to worry about after "You & I Can Never Be Holy," but this isn't ship art or glamorization, just depiction. lt's just about Dex's North Star thing & him putting that person on a pedestal because in a way, the song I referenced ("Just Pretend" by Bad Omens) reminded me of him based on Wilson Bethel's description of how Dex only ever viewed this character as the epitome of pureness. I'II anecdote why this song reminded me of him just to be careful after the art slides yall are interested.

after 3 years of him knowing about my art, this is the first time I'll be showing Charlie Cox one of my Daredevil artworks myself... I was so scared that he's already seen my best artworks so I wanted to make something extra special... so it's going to be my first ever moving print.
Matt Murdock means so much to me. You all already know that, but I always saw him as what everyone saw Superman as last year & I wanted to make a piece about that. While I see Clark as "hope," I've always seen Matt as "hope despite." So in my mind,"Mr. Brightside" was his "Punkrocker."
(Ik "Lithonia" is the marketed song, but I perceive "Lithonia" to be more about the character of "New York" & not just Daredevil)
His suit slowly going back to red always looked like him coming back out of the dark, like hope visualized so I wanted my piece to do that, I was worried that aspect would get lost in physical prints so I just had to make them lenticular... I hope y'all like it. I hope Charlie also likes it.
& please get the prints!! They're super cool & were very expensive for me to get made π
No one talking about how Charlie Cox has the brat tamer voice down pat...his condescending and intimidating voice for Matt is so π€€

the number of people who seriously believe frank would have encouraged karen to further traumatize herself by killing dex, proves that they don't actually get frank's character and only care to glorify his violence without understanding it. frank would have stopped karen and killed dex himself, that's the only difference. whether that would have been better or worse, is honestly debatable
