Instant Citizen by Singaporean Artist and Architectural designer Fiona Tan in collaboration with Artist Yang Jie
"There once was a place called Gentlefolk County. Its citizens were known throughout the land for becoming ideal citizens instantly, thus creating the perfect society. Well, almost." Instant citizen is a first-time collaboration between artist and architectural designer Fiona Tan and artist Yang Jie. The installation explores the themes of citizenship, identity and belonging. The intersection of top-down social control and inter-individual/ communal friction and the complex relationship between personal freedom and the greater good of the collective is explored through a series of 7 implausible yet ostensibly everyday furniture(s). A table that folds on itself when an impolite dinner guest tries to leave prematurely, a desk that guarantees optimal study equipped with a flap door towards a miserable cactus, a closet for the strategic planner, a staircase which requires one's neighbour to run up and down in order to operate a single lightbulb.. It posits that in order for society to function as a well-oiled machine, a degree of inconvenience and discomfort is required to force one into tolerance and good behaviour. Through the use of humour and detournement culminating in the make-belief nation of Gentlefolk County, the strangely familiar and the familiarly strange setting aims to provoke visitors to reflect upon its real world parallels. The work is intended to inspire further dialogue and appreciate the value and mechanisms that make any country a liveable and lively home.

Grimm City | Flea Folly Architects | BLDG BLOG
Later this summer, London’s Flea Folly Architects—Pascal Bronner & Thomas Hillier—will be running a workshop in what they broadly call “narrative architecture” at the Tate Modern. "What would a town inhabited by Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder and Man Ray look like?" they ask. "Taking inspiration from works in the Tate collection, in particular the speculative etchings by architects Alexander Brodsky and Ilya Utkin and paintings by the Surrealists, our objective is to design and build a fictional miniature village made entirely from paper." Their own project, Grimm City, is perhaps an example of what might result.

Album Covers - The Bigger Picture
“We all have a favourite album. One that means something to us more than others. Album cover art used to be meticulously created to portray some kind of message that the band or artist was trying to convey. But in this digital age, buying an album has become less about buying a physical package to buying a digital version out of convenience. So in honour of a once coveted industry standard, we take a look at some of the most iconic album covers over the years and put our own spin on them by revealing ‘the bigger picture’.”

The greater thickness makes it possible to achieve surface treatments such as mirror polish, multi-level engraving and different material finishes and textures, which were until now unthinkable with the thickness of 3.5mm.
