jess misses her hit on purpose btw. if you even care,
i'm talking about this moment here, where lupe tells esti to do a double steal. now whether jess heard or understood what lupe said i don't know, but you can see that she still catches on to what they're doing before the pitch is thrown. so i think that when jess swings, she misses that ball intentionally, here's why.
some context for those not as familiar with baseball, jess is the team's shortstop, which is a position well known for having very strong all around players. meaning, there's a really really good chance she's going to hit whatever comes at her. especially this late in the season. the other team knows this, especially because jo has no doubt told them, and jess knows that they know this, so she uses it to her advantage.
now if jess were to hit that ball then she puts herself, lupe and esti all at risk of being out. if she doesn't swing then she's not in the way of the catcher, who will then have a much easier time throwing the ball out to jo at third base to tag lupe out. so instead, jess swings. and in the time that the pitch was thrown the other team would've had to go from covering the areas closer to their bases to prevent a possible steal, to then covering their wider fielding areas in the likely event that jess would hit the ball that she is currently swinging for. and then when jess misses, the other team has to quickly rush back to again try and cover that double steal, while their catcher also has to get enough space around jess to make a clean throw to third once jo is there to catch it. and they of course were unsuccessful.
if you watch jess' swing carefully you can see that it also just looks... really weird. it's too slow, her swing scoops down and there's just no power behind it. it looks fake tbh, which is strange for such a strong player. and when she misses she doesn't look upset or frustrated in the least, despite having just struck out. she's excitedly watching the double steal play out and cheering on her teammates when they pull it off. she sacrificed herself and an out to move her teammates further along, leaving them in the capable hands of shirley, who then brings lupe home before the inning is over.

âDo I need to record your voice and play it back? Full offense, you sound like shit.â
âI sound fine.â
Eva crosses her arms, giving Kate that look that she both loves and hates. The one that means Eva is seeing right through whatever new bullshit Kateâs come up with, which she didnât buy for even a second. Kate crosses their own arms and glares at her, trying valiantly to stifle the cough thatâs creeping up her throat.
âLook, can we just go already?â they ask. âWeâre gonna be late.â
Eva pulls her car keys out of her pocket and locks her car. âHa. Weâre not going anywhere tonight.â
âWhat? But youâve been dying to see this movie-â
âAnd you sound like death.â Eva steps into the house, closing the door with her foot and shooing Kate a few steps back. âNo wonder you didnât pick up when I called you on my way here.â
âIâm fine,â Kate protests. âPlease, can we just go?â
âI already told you no.â Eva kneels and starts untying her shoes. âCâmon, thereâs no way you actually want to go anywhere tonight. I know you probably feel like shit, right?â
Kate wraps her arms around themself, biting the inside of her cheek. The thing is, Eva is totally right (like always). Theyâve been coughing all day, it feels like someone scrubbed her throat with steel wool, theyâre exhausted despite having done nothing today, and sheâs pretty sure that by the end of the night, they wonât be able to breathe through her nose anymore. The thought of sitting through a movie feeling like this isnât exactly the most enticing thing in the world.
But Evaâs been so excited for this movie. Sheâs been looking forward to its release for weeks. Kate wonât ruin that for her, just because of a stupid cold. They can muscle through it.
âEva, please,â she tries again. âI know how bad you wanted to see this movie-â
âOkay, stop.â Eva stands up and puts her hands on Kateâs shoulders, sort of forcing them to look her in the eye. She has that expression again, the I know youâre lying, so cut the bullshit already expression. âLook, I know what youâre doing. You feel bad about being sick and us not going out tonight, so youâre pretending to be fine even though you feel like shit.â
Kate looks down, unwilling to look her in the eye, because Eva always sees right through them. Sheâs still wearing their high tops, and Eva is wearing dark blue socks with white dots like stars.
âBut the whole point of going on a date,â Eva continues, âis going somewhere together, not whatever it is weâre going to do. And if you need a rain check, you are completely allowed to take one, even if I have to force you, because Iâm clearly the only person in this room who gives a shit about your health.â
Kate canât help smiling a little. âToo bad you donât care about your own health a little more.â
âOh my God, are you really bringing this up now?â
âThere is no way the amount of caffeine you consume on a daily basis is healthy, particularly not for a teenager-â
âAnd you can yell at me for that later, like you do every morning.â Eva lets go of Kateâs shoulders to take both her hands. âBut right now, please, let me make you stay home and rest. Weâll go see the movie another night, I promise.â
Kate sighs, faking exasperation. âOkay, fine.â
âThank you.â Eva shakes her head a little. âGod, youâre so fucking stubborn.â
âSays you.â
Eva kisses Kateâs forehead, then jerks back with a gasp, almost like sheâs been burned. Kate starts to ask whatâs wrong, but Eva drops their hand to feel her face with the back of her fingers, her expression alarmed.
âJesus fucking Christ, weâre definitely not going anywhere any time soon,â she says. âDo you know where any thermometers might be? Youâre burning up.â
âI really doubt itâs that bad-â
âNope, shush.â Eva slides an arm around Kateâs shoulders, guiding them towards her room. âYou look so cute, by the way, and I love your outfit and appreciate that that is my t-shirt, but now you need to go put on comfy clothes and get the fuck into bed right fucking now, and I am going to go make you hot tea and try to track down a thermometer. Maybe a number for your concerningly high temperature will finally convince you that you are, in fact, sick.â
Kate leans into her. âYouâre bossy.â
âI am actively taking care of you, you little shit.â Eva takes her arm back and pokes Kateâs shoulder. âShoo, go change.â
âYeah, Iâm going.â Kate glances back with a teasing grin. âBossy.â
âUgh, and I canât even get mad, because youâre sick.â Eva throws her hands in the air, starting to turn to leave. âIâm going to go make you tea, because Iâm a good girlfriend even when youâre being mean.â
Kate leans in the doorway, crossing her arms. âHey, Eva?â
Eva looks back, one hand on the stair railing. âHm?â
âI love you.â
Eva softens, a genuine smile creeping onto her face. âI love you too.â
Kate closes the door behind her, unable to hide a smile as they grab a pair of sweatpants from the basket of clean, unfolded laundry in the corner, and one of Evaâs hoodies from the back of their desk chair. She can hear Evaâs footsteps in the kitchen, and even though thereâs still a tiny part of them that feels guilty, itâs being drowned out by the part of her that loves Eva so much for stubbornly taking care of them, no matter what, even when it means skipping a date that theyâd been planning for ages to sit at home and let a sick Kate sleep in her lap for most of the night.
yall say euphoria is unrealistic but at my high school this girl literally killed two of her teammates because they werent good enough cheerleaders for her liking, pinned the murders on a freshman, and then a few weeks later locked the rest of the cheerteam in a room where she stabbed another girl in the leg and admitted to the murders before being knocked out and arrested
I think there are people that help you become the person that you end up being, and you can be grateful for them even if they were never meant to be in your life foreverâŚIâm glad I knew you, too.

GO đ THE đ FUCK đ OFF. Also, the American educational system is trash. I applaud this childâs parents for giving her a voice and standing up against bias authority.
Classroom full of mostly black and brown students:
Black student: [unintelligibleâand then]  âŚand then throwing everything away beneath it because it doesnât pertain to you. Iâm sorry â
White teacher: âyou know what, Iâm sorry -Iâm sorryâŚ
Black student: âNo, no, noâŚI let you talk -I let you talk, youâre gonna let me talk.
[Other students gasps]
White student: Go ahead. Finish.
Black student: Iâm sorry that this is the way that it is. Youâre right, it is fucked up. But white people control everythingâŚand thatâs not fair. And when anybody, any other minority tries to say anything about it or change it, weâre complaining or weâre ungrateful or all this other stuff because we still have this or that. But then you say something about âOh, I donât wantâthereâs too many Latinos and thereâs too manyââ
White teacher: I didnât say thatâ
[Various students disagree]
White teacher: I said I want to control the border!
Black student: You said you donât want this to turn into a Latin country because thereâll be too manyÂ
White teacher: I did not say that.
[Various students disagree]
Student 2: You said you want to preserve the American culture.
Black student: There is no American culture. American culture is EVERYTHING.
[Various students agree]
Random: Mayonnaise!
[Students laugh]
Black student: And because you are white and so closed-minded, you refuse to accept that, you refuse to acceptâ
White teacher: Donât tell me Iâm closed-mindedâ
Black student: Everything youâve said to me is closed-minded.
White teacher: Just because I donât agree with you doesnât mean Iâm closed-minded.
Black student: You donât need to agreeâI -Iâve had conversations with people that donât agree with me, but if they at least listen and try to acceptâyouâre not accepting the truth.
White teacher: Why do I have to accept what you think is right?
Black student: You need to accept the truth! Not what I think is right, what is actually happening rightâ
White teacher: Well, let me tell you what I think. You said white people have been in control of everythingâŚ.who is the president of the United States right now?!
Students: A black man!
*Various sounds of incredulity*
Black student: WITH A WHITE CONGRESS! WITH A WHITE SENATE! WITH WHITE EVERYTHING ELSE! HE DOESNâT HAVE THE CONTROL OF EVERYTHING!
Random: GO OFFÂ
Other Random: GO OFFâ
*The class is in an uproar*
Random student: YOU ARE SO PRIVILEGED THAT YOU JUST DONâT SEE IT!

Itâs worse than that. That wasnât a rubber bullet, that was another tear gas canisterâyou can see it a few seconds later in the footage when the camera pans over to the advancing cops.
And they shot him in the crotch with it.
If I were feeling charitable Iâd say that the cop who fired the shell was aiming for center of mass and miscalculated the distance and hit the guy low.
But Iâm not feeling charitable. Itâs clear that was a deliberate malicious attack designed to hurt the guy as badly as possible with the weapon at hand. The goal was to cause him pain and intimidate bystanders.
Also get to know your street medics and maybe buy them a drink later. Theyâll often be the ones picking you up and making sure youâre good after this shit happens
Allow demonstrators to take action without fear of immediate identification. If you choose to wear a mask, wear it right.
Cover Up
It is not enough to half cover your face. Even if you get away, the police may use photos or videos to charge you later. Cover your hair, face, arms and hands. Cloth gloves are the best. Take out piercings. Make sure there are no identifying features on your clothes, shoes or backpack. If you bring any materials with you, wipe them down first with rubbing alcohol first to get the prints off. Donât bring anything you donât need.
Stay Tight
If possible, come to a demonstration with a small group of people you trust. Choose your crew based on shared intentions, not just friendship. Youâre here to have each otherâs back in the streets and follow up if one of you gets arrested or hurt. Strangers needs to protect each other too. Stay physically close, do not spread out, so that if police try to enter the crowd, you can âaccidentallyâ get in their way. The front of the march might need to slow down while the back catches up. Stay moving, though: a tight, mobile crowd is difficult to surround or disperse.
Plan Your Exit
Always wear âcivilian clothesâ under your hoodie so you can de-bloc and blend in a crowd or smoothly walk away. Keep an eye out for danger zones and escape routes. If things heat up, stay calm and act decisively. Commit to your exit when you decide youâre done. Sometimes you have to sprint and hide; sometimes you just step onto the sidewalk and remove your mask. You can de-bloc in the middle of a friendly crowd if youâre sure you are well-screened.
Keep It Quiet
Bragging and storytelling are natural but they are easy to use against us. If you have to talk, choose someone trustworthy who was with you in the streets. Donât post anything on facebook you wouldnât show to a cop. Same goes for Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr. Remember the police will read your texts and call-log if they arrest you.
Never, Ever Snitch
If arrested, invoke your right to remain silent. Name, address and no more.
Captioned under request.
Ok, hereâs a thing to remember: the cops do not give a shit about anyoneâs rights. They hate your right to remain silent. They despise your lawyer. The only thing cops give a shit about is getting *caught* violating your rights⌠And then, only if it has consequences.
Do not trust a cop. Do not give them anything. Ever.
iâve been doing my homework on how to break into a writing career and honestly. thereâs a Lot that i didnât know about thats critical to a writing career in this day and age, and on the one hand, its understandable because weâre experiencing a massive cultural shift, but on the other hand, writers who do not have formal training in school or donât have the connections to learn more via social osmosis end up extremely out of loop and working at a disadvantage.Â
like, i didnt know about twitter pitch parties!! i didnt know about literary agents and publishers tweeting their manuscript wishlist, in hopes that some poor soul out there has written the book they really want to read and publish!! this isnt some shit you learn about in school! you really need to know the ins and outs of the writing community to be successful!Â
for anyone interested, hereâs what iâve learned so far in my quest for more writing knowledge:
1. Writerâs Market 2019 is a great place to startâ it gives you a list of magazines and journals that you can send your work to depending on the genre as well as lists a shit ton of literary agents that specify what genres they represent, how you can get in contact with them and how they accept query letters. this is a book that updates every year and tbh i only bought it this year so i dont know how critical it is to have an updated version Â
2. do your research. mostly on literary agents because if you listed on your site that you like to represent fluffy YA novels and some asshole sends you a 80k manuscript about likeâŚgritty viking culture, you will be severely pissed off. always go in finding someone who you know will actually like your work because theyâre the ones who will try to advocate for you in getting published.
3. learn how to write a query letter. there are slightly varying formulas to how you can write an effective query letter. youâre also going to want to get feedback on your query letter because its the first thing the literary agent will read and based on how well you do it, it could be the difference between them rejecting you outright and giving your manuscript a quick read
4. unfortunately, youâre gonna want to get a twitter. Twitter is where a lot of literary agents are nowadays, and they host things like twitter pitch parties, where you pitch your manuscript in a few sentences and hashtag it with #Pitmad #Pitdark, some version of pit. a lot of literary agents and publishers will ALSO post their manuscript wishlists, which is just the kind of books theyâd like to represent/publish, and they hashtag this with #MSWL (it is NOT for writers to use, only for agents/publishers)
5. connect with other writers, literary agents, publishers at book events. you will absolutely need the connections if you want to get ahead as a writer. thats just kind of the state of the world.
UPDATE: so i just got signed by an agent bc of twitter pitch parties. for any aspiring writers, you dont HAVE to go the twitter pitch party route, its just another way to get noticed a bit fasterÂ
