Daniel Zehner is the featured poet for the month of August in the Mad Poets Society Local Lyrics Interview blog which is now available on line. The wide ranging interview by poet John Wojtowicz (No Light Sabers in the Kitchen) highlights Daniel's upcoming chapbook "On the Outskirts" by Finishing Line Press due for release on October 30, 2026. Daniel talks about what drew him to writing poetry, his process for generating new poems and the poets who have influenced him. "On the Outskirts" contains poems that were written independently of one another over a twelve year period. He then realized that they fit the theme of childhood trauma, recovery and beyond recovery. The first poem in the book, "The Worst of Winter," refers to his mother's "madness" which is the source of the trauma and damage. Many of the poems deal with the damage, his recovery from that damage and the wonderful relationships he has been blessed with in the later years of his life. What happens after everyone leaves? Least moves room by room through an emptied house a family once shared, finding in each abandoned object—a wrinkled pillow or a rusted razor—codes about lives no longer there. These poems notice what remains after unexplained exit: light sieved through window shades, dust admixed where fingers once brushed, a daughter’s dress draped beside her mother’s. Written in a radically compressed “drip” line often just one word wide, Least recalls Objectivist tradition where what often matters is precise seeing. But these poems push beyond hyper-realistic perception into wordplay and buried story. What emerges is a family’s household archaeology, carried out with the patience needed to document what can’t be saved. The final poems edge toward erasure, finding corners where light and language reduce to their smallest possible unit. Robert Tobias recently appeared on A Book Finds a podcast sponsored by the Maryland Writers Association. He discussed how he began writing poetry late in life about a yearning for his Dad to “tousle my hair” and tell me I “did a good job.” That memory opened the door to a series of autobiographical poems that became What Lives in Me, about a son driven by the fear and judgment inherited from his father, until he confronts the cost of masculinity, ambition, and shame to reclaim his own voice.

Dr. Mercilee Jenkins is a poet, performance artist and playwright.
