It was a positive thing, this, being able to move about more freely outside. Knowing that Wren was acting out in a more teenage fashion rather than the whole âbeing consumed by flames due to my phoenix heritageâ one. The type of fever that couldnât be accurately diagnosed, which had sent them to try and find more answers as to who they were. How to handle themselves.
He glanced at the person sitting opposite him, hesitant, before speaking up for the first time in probably too many minutes of near complete silence. âIâm... thankful for your company. Youâre - You seem to be fairly knowledgeable of those around, not that Iâm using you for intel or anything of the sort, but...â A slightly shorter pause, lips pursed. â...a friend is a good thing to have. Even at my age.â Lips pressed again at the self-deprecating tone in the latter, eyes peering at the other cautiously. This much, friendship, even coffee, he could allow for. He thought.

So, what does this mean? That weâre both staying in L.A.? Is that a problem?âŚNope! No, itâs great.

â Suits you. â Emil wasnât slow to back down when he noticed his prey getting defensive, smiling at the other while pointing towards the total. â Itâs probably not every parent that would indulge their children like this. Of course itâs not bad for my particular business. â He smiled again, his fingers touching Robinâs palm as he gave the debit card back. His suspicions confirmed on the natural warmth they both seemed to share he took a step away, resuming the proper position for a store clerk. â Donât be a stranger. We thank you for shopping with us. â
...
âI, uh -- yes. Thank you.â He hesitated, fumbling a little as he picked up his groceries and tried not to blush again after having made eye-contact. His priority, as heâd mentioned in the past, was Wrenâs well-being above all, so... there really was no time to let himself be distracted by anyone else. No matter how much someoneâs teenager might sometimes resent having all of that attention piled up on his own person. Heâd almost jerked away as his hand was briefly brushed - which wouldâve only brought upon further embarrassment - unaware at first of the similarity between their bodily temperatures. âYes, I-- Iâll see you again. Thanks.â He was oddly aware of his own size - again - as he made his way out the store, only briefly pausing as he touched the door and its far-too-cold metal handle. Eyes flickering back to look upon the clerk, who was by now focused on his next customer, before he shuffled his way out of the store entirely.

â Ah. I should concede to you then. â A smile showed on Emilâs lips as he scanned the next few items, gaze flickering towards the man in front of him once again. Sure he couldâve let the moment pass on by but it was much more fun seeing another person blush in front of him. â Does this mean that these arenât your favorite brand? It could be useful knowledge. â
...
Robin froze momentarily, his expression betraying his confusion. Truthfully, he didnât spend a lot of time thinking about his own preferences - one way or the other - and being asked about them by the clerk at the shop heâd been visiting so frequently was... something he wasnât sure he could put a name to. At the same time, it was something he was pretty definitely sure he wouldnât want to make a fool out of himself for. âThatâs -- Market research?â he managed to squeeze out, head tilting to one side. A large part of him longed for his past occupations, of looking after others whilst in a safe place of his own. âIâm more partial towards home-cooked meals,â he confessed, after a pause too long to be considered normal. âIt canât... hurt to have more frozen pizza or poptarts around the house, though.â

â Wouldnât it be simpler to get more on one go? â The werewolf wasnât judging but lately it seemed like he would get to see the other on a daily basis. Hard to forget the oh-so-healthy diet built on frozen food and ready-made microwaveable meals.

...
âI canât say that there is any fault in your logic, of course,â Robin excused himself quickly, heat rising to his cheeks, then gave a quick shake of his head. âUnfortunately, logic doesnât necessarily align with a 17-year-oldâs stomach.â Not with Wren growing hungrier any passing minute, the forces he was dealing with stranger than they couldâve foreseen. Thankfully, his bank account could more than settle this particular need.
I love you, man.
Wait, tomorrow is Christmas Eve, though. Thanks for the reminder. I still gotta shop. You still need to shop?

âIs there a reason theyâve been lost?â Hagen wondered, his mind immediately coming up with a million different scenarios as to why. âOr are we just working with a mysterious disappearance that no one knows about or at least that no one talks about. Glossed over town histories never seem to turn out that great.â There hadnât been any that he could think of.Â
âOh you donât have to worry about that, I have plenty of time on my hand.â The money part not so much, but he already had said he wouldnât if it involved an investment. âI donât really do much. I just kind of exist. Float along like a thing that floats in life. Whatâs that song? Dust in the Wind? Yeah, thatâs it. Thatâs me. Dust in the windâ
He listened as he spoke about the time coming in the future being enough, hopefully. Time was a thing Hagen wasnât sure most people appreciated enough. Maybe it was because some people had all the time in the world that it no longer meant anything. âI think it is perfect evidence that itâs a possibility. Just donât - donât think youâve failed if you mess up. People mess up. Youâre going to mess up, but that just means you keep going and you keep trying.â He could still remember his dad telling him this. Of course heâd been told them as an eight year old who had accidentally scored on his own teamâs goal during a soccer game, but it still seemed fitting. âItâs like Aaliyah said, âif at first you donât succeed, you can dust it off and try again.â â
âThe fact that we canât find them is just the tip of the iceberg, really. There have been many theories put forward - and we devote a fair amount of time to each and every one.â Robinâs smile returned slightly as he pointed it out, knowing that that was at least one topic that could catch otherâs attention. At least a solid 20% of the time. âOf course, it could simply end up being a case of the archivists being less than proud of some parts of the townâs history, thus trying to erase them. Which is, at the same time, intriguing.â
Some concern showed in his eyes as he looked at the young man, who seemed to have described himself accurately - or was adapting himself to said description as time went on. âItâs a shame that you would consider yourself dust, really. I think youâve got a lot of interesting thoughts to share with the world.â He smiled, again, hoping to express the sincerity of his words.
âI donât believe I know her work. Is she a poet?â Not that he knew poetry, either, but still. âI appreciate your saying so. Itâs... taken me a few bumps in the head to figure out just how wrong-footed I was about a lot of things. Though figuring out the steps to fix things is a slow process.â Slow, but hopefully steady. âWill you come by my pub sometime, Hagen? Iâd like to chat with you more.â And he could see Wren waving at him from just a few feet ahead, something that prompted him to get to his feet, extend a hand towards the youth. âItâs truly been a pleasure to meet you. Hopefully youâll find yourself somewhere less windy this time around. Be more able to call your own shots.â
edgarwayneâ:
Feeling the boy stiffen next to him sent Edgar into a panic. What did he say wrong? Should he backtrack and try to make this better? Or maybe just ask? Biting his lip, the vampire desperately thought back to their brief conversation to figure out where he might have misstepped. Â
Finally he just came out with it, âwhatâs wrong Wren?â If he had messed up and upset Wren, he was determined to do anything he possibly could to right it. Â
Edgar perked up as Robin returned, still the anxiety welling up in his chest. He took the water bottle with a small thanks.  âIâd love to play some games,â he said, before glancing between the two Finches.  âBut if youâd rather it just be the two of you I totally understand,â he added quickly. Edgar wasnât entirely sure if that was directed more to Robin or Wren specifically.
âI hadnât seen my dad in half a year,â the boy commented, somewhat under his breath, not taking into account the fact that the other, being a vampire, would be able to hear him. Of course, as far as Finn was aware, supernatural beings altogether didnât exist and, as such, everything had to have some mundane explanation - no matter how twisted. âDid they not want to see me?â He didnât doubt Ava didnât want him around, truth be told, but that was between the two of them, not their fatherâs boyfriend or whatever.
âAre any of the booths giving out video games?â he asked, not a beat too late, standing up with the balled up napkin in his hand, taking a small sip of his soda to help the snack go down. It was a long way down to travel, anyhow. âActually, can I meet up with you guys later? Some of my friends are around, too, and they wanted to hang out.â His shoulders went up in a slightly defensive gesture as he looked from one man to the other, expression hopeful. âI donât know what time your guysâ bedtime is and all.â What with their old, advanced age.
-
There seemed to be very little general quorum to his suggestion but, Robin wasnât one to grow disheartened so quickly. He snorted slightly at the feeling of being somewhat lightly roasted by his own child, reaching up a hand to run it through Wrenâs hair. âI promise, my bedtime is still later than your curfew.â How cheeky of him. âI -- Thatâs good, you being with your friends. Just... keep your phone on you at all times, yes? Iâll pick up, whatever you need.â Whatever he might come across. Some others... didnât particularly seem to care about hiding their otherness.
He wasnât blind, either, to the slightly hooded expression in his sonâs eyes. Wrenâs mouth twisted in a slight grimace before he nodded his acceptance on the very few conditions his father passed onto him, saying nothing but a muted âthanksâ as more money was put into his hands, then sparing a glance towards the vampire. âWeâll -- Iâll come find you. Later.â With very little decorum for public displays of affection, he leaned in to kiss the top of the teenagerâs head, managing to make him blush and squeak out a âlaterâ and a nod in Edgarâs general direction before he was scurrying off.
âI... I donât know how to classify that. Are you okay?â Robin wondered, his gaze returning to his boyfriend once he lost sight of Wren, keeping more space between them than he really preferred. Why was it that his hand was constantly being pulled towards Edgarâs? Were they magnetically linked? âI can still try to win you a gift, or two. Maybe Allen and Poe will like me better if I do that.â Were birds and rats meant to get along, however?Â
