i’ve been debating whether or not to post this but i figured if it’ll make people happy during these weird times, i’ll go for it :) i’m going to try to avoid listing anything that goes too in-depth about the hatchetfield series or the ongoing story, since that’s more something that does make sense to pay for. most of this will be fun snippets and behind-the-scenes stuff; i highly recommend buying the commentary to hear over 2 hours worth of facts like these !!

i’ll try not to make this too long or reveal too much. after all, the commentary is up for purchase so that starkid can earn the money they need, and i would hate to defeat that purpose. everything here is segments that i consider harmless enough and worth sharing. enjoy!

tom and jane’s names come from the fact that black friday & the hatchetfield series are greatly inspired by the mist, which stars thomas jane.

the story of black friday (or at least the story of tom and jane) had essentially been developed & completed before tgwdlm was written.

black friday does take place in an alternate universe than tgwdlm, though nick doesn’t specify what differences there are between realities. however, jane’s death remains the same in all realities of hatchetfield that we’ve seen thus far.

all of lex’s scenes leading up to “califorM.I.A” had to be carefully edited by nick, as angela had forgotten to put on her backpack on one of the days they were filming. in this show, robert ended up running offstage to bring her the bag during their first scene.

the dollar bill and toilet paper that the homeless man offers to frank are exactly the same ones that appeared in tgwdlm. when joey’s costume was taken out of storage, the items were still in its pockets.

in order to successfully block the long sequence of musical numbers in the shoppers’ line scene (“what do you say” -> “our doors are open” -> “feast or famine”), james had to draw out the cast’s position onstage step by step, like a coach drawing up positions for a sports team.

the movie theatre kid was originally meant to be hot chocolate boy, but obviously that didn’t work out because robert was cast as ethan.

general mcnamara was originally supposed to have a long monologue covering his backstory, including the fact that he used to live in the body of an eagle. (?!)

“monsters and men” is heavily inspired by “into the fire” from the scarlet pimpernel.

matt wanted “deck the halls of northville high” to be a very sharp contrast from the rest of the musical, as if you’re literally watching a different show. as a result, most of the costumes for the movie sequence are directly modeled after characters from high school musical.

for a couple of shows, the L on robert’s jacket had fallen off, so it just read “KRINGE”

nick says that becky is a “true hero” and a truly good person. she’s a representation of strength and would only ever kill someone in self-defense.

originally the high school ensemble was continuing to act out santa claus is going to high school throughout all of “take me back”.

“take me back” had to be brought up a whole step because kim couldn’t sing any lower. (we love a soprano queen holy shit!!!)

basically nick is just obsessed with tom & becky (same nick lmao), he describes them as “the most beautiful idea; they find each other and everything’s okay”.

“monsters and men (reprise)” was originally meant to take place during the peip hq scene, but nick and jeff decided that it was too soon and would be more effective later in the show.

several people auditioned for sherman, but jaime played the role as (in nick’s words) “cute” rather than “gross”, so they decided to go with her rendition of the character.

originally nick wanted linda to be covered in blood during “adore me”, but they decided that it was unnecessary.

for the 45 minutes before her scene with wiggly / “do you want to play”, kendall would sit in her dressing room and hold her eyes open staring into a lightbulb to make herself cry.

during one of the shows, a woman in the front row started fumbling around repeatedly saying “where’s my bag? where’s my bag?” at full volume in the middle of “black friday”. (it’s called theatre etiquette jesus christ)

sometimes angela’s spotlight in “black friday” would just abruptly shut off and leave her in darkness.

originally lex’s line was “he promises to fill all of your holes”, but they had to change it to “fix” because audiences would always start laughing.

“if i fail you” was deliberately filmed to mirror “what tim wants”.

lex has a very specific backstory involving her parents that only the langs and angela (and maybe jeff?) know the details of.

not a fact but anytime during the commentary when two characters would get up in each others’ faces, jeff would start telling them to make out djhdhf

lauren and jon’s change from linda & gary -> paul & emma was the fastest in the show; dylan, angela and kim had to say their lines as slowly as possible to give them some extra seconds.

lex and hannah have no idea where / what moscow is.

hannah can see between realities. when she stares down the camera in “what if tomorrow comes”, she’s speaking to those watching; she’s sending her warning out to us as we see her through the screen.

anyway i think that’s all! i really tried to write down a good amount of interesting facts without ruining the whole purpose of buying the commentary. on that note, please buy it! it helps support starkid and has so much more of this content than i could fit in one post, plus an entire 50-minute behind the scenes video! it’s so worth it. i hope y’all found this interesting and it made quarantine a bit better!❤️
