We were Cmac. The Combined martial arts club. They taught judo, modern arnis, winchun, Jeet kun do, muay Thai and Bjj. I spent most of my time in modern arnis and muay Thai. It was all student ran and all the classes had certified instructors. I was given opportunity to compete at local and nationally recognized tournaments like the Arnold classic. Meet high level instructors like datu Tim Hartman and Dan Inosanto. By the time I was in the middle of the my sophomore year at UB I found myself ensnared as a representative of cmac the student government of the University at buffalo! (Sarcastic). To my surprise I became president for my last two years of the club. I did ok. I kept it together as a president. For the most part. I wasn’t as talented as a martial arts or a leader as the ones who came before me. I was soon to graduate and it was election season again for the student government. Inside cmacs’ constitution there is a clause that has the standing president decide who the next president will be. Providing, by some miraculous happenstance, there was a tie in votes. So, unlucky me, the vote ends in a draw. I have to make my judgement call in public. In doing so I lost a good amount of my friends. The club survived but had shrunk because instructors were graduating and moving on. I myself graduated. My martial arts reputation damaged, I fled buffalo. I had a child care and a martial arts job lined up. Apartment lease almost signed for. I dropped it all. I was lucky to be in buffalo during that time. It was a Renaissance of martial arts at cmac while I was there.
