50 years ago today, Police arrested about 800 students at the University of California Berkeley Free Speech Movement rally. The students had taken over and staged a sit-in at the Sprout Hall Administration Building protesting the U.C. Regents' decision to punish student activists for what many students saw as justified civil disobedience. One of those students, Mario Savio gave an impassioned speech in which he said, "There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart that you can't take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop!" Singer Joan Baez, only 23 at the time, sang "We Shall Overcome"Â

50 years ago today, the Houston Colt .45s officially changed their nickname to the Astros. The name corresponded with the move from Colt Stadium to the Harris County Domed Stadium, or The Astrodome as it would be known, that same year. Even though the franchise had only existed for 3 years, they had to change their name due to a dispute with the Colt Firearm Company. The new name was to honor the city of Houston being the home to NASA's Manned Spaceflight Center, soon to be called the Johnson Space Center.Â

Scientific American Magazine for Dec. 1964
Sports Illustrated for Nov. 30, 1964
The cover featured Defensive Tackle Alex Karras of the Detroit Lions.Â
Newsweek Magazine for Nov. 30, 1964
The cover featured French President Charles De Gaulle. France had recently seen unparalleled economic growth, and many attributed this to the many projects championed by De Gaulle. These include the extension of the Marseilles Harbor, the promotion of the Caravelle jet liner and decision to build the Concorde along with the British, and the expansion of the French auto industry.Â
