it wasn't scary enough to be a horror movie, wasn't philosophical enough to be thought provoking, didn't have enough plot to be story focused, and showed too much plot to be backrooms-focused. i also thought the cinematography was very basic and amateur (lots of very obvious framing or things centered in frame) and the acting (bar Clark) was subpar and stiff. most of the plot points were very basic, it seemed to me as i was watching that the plot was built around the backrooms itself and the half-formed characters were shoved into whatever spaces were left. the third act shift was much too sudden and without foreshadowing, in a way that made it entirely uninteresting. Clark didn't have the whole "i don't want to change" thing throughout the rest of the movie; in fact, in the beginning he's actively in therapy in the 90's, which shows he's actively going out of his way to change!

Mary's chase scene in the end was contrived and for lack of a better word, kind of stupid? i tried to suspend disbelief (and believe me, i can suspend a lot) enough so that i didn't laugh when she kept pulling out that big hunk of concrete, but when she took it out of her pocket at the end and beat the monster with it (while holding it back with one hand...?), i couldn't help but roll my eyes and just think "what??".
