âIâm going to go look for them,â you whispered as to not disturb anyone else watching. Earth nodded, patting your arm before his attention went back to the film. You ducked between groups, heading in the direction you saw Mercury storm off in. You bump into people on your way out of the area, apologizing as you search for the small ball of annoyance.
âHey!â You stop a couple on their way over, panting as it became apparent how long youâve been rushing around. âHave you seen a person about yea tall,â you started, bringing your hand to about Mercuryâs height, âreddish brown hair, red eyes, kinda cute but in an angry puppy way?â
âYeah,â one of them said, dropping their partnerâs hand, âI saw them run over to the snack table.â They pointed vaguely in the direction you were running to.
âThanks so much.â They waved dismissively as you scampered off.
Lo and behold, Mercury was there, sitting in the grass under a tree, looking as grumpy as ever.
âHey, stranger.â They didnât look at you, instead turning their line of sight away. Â
âWhat do you want?â You sat next to them, your shoulderâs bumping before they scooted away from you.
âTo check up on you,â you answered, offering a kind smile. âYou just kind of ran away. Are you okay?â
They turned to look at you, seemingly ready to argue. Their anger seemed to disappear, swapped with nerves as they quickly looked away, their lips pressed in a pout.
âOh?â You teased, scooting closer. âBecause, someone whoâs fine probably wouldnât have ran off like that.â You canât hear what they grumbled under their breath, but youâre willing to bet a pretty penny on it being not very nice. They shuffle a bit further from you and you, in retaliation, shuffle closer.
âYouâre very annoying, do you know that?â They huffed, crossing their arms.
âAnd youâre very strange, while weâre stating the obvious.â They let out a small âhumphâ that was as moody as they are. âWhy did you leave?â
ââŚâ They risked a glance over at you, their frown still evident on their face, even as their eyes flashed with caution. âItâs nothing.â
âIt didnât seem like nothing.â You leaned closer, a reassuring smile tugging on your lips. âCâmon, youâre the only one that hasnât told me, like, anything about you.â Their eyes widened briefly with shock, lips parting slightly before they shook their head.
âMaybe thereâs a reason for that.â They leaned back against the tree, sighing as their arms dropped to their lap. âThereâs not much to know.â
âThat canât be true.â Their line of sight snaps to you, confusion evident clear on their face. âTell me something, anything!â
âWhy do you want to know so bad?!â It wasnât very noticeable, but visible heat seemed to waver around their face. They were kind of cute when they were getting defensive.
âBecause,â you answered, poking them in their shoulder, âIâm interested in learning about you. Why is that so surprising?â They seemed to short circuit for a moment, mouth opening and closing as they searched for how to respond.
You half expected some kind of deflection until they quietly asked, âwhat do you want to know?â
âWell,â you started, leaning back against the tree, the distance between you minimal, âanything youâre willing to tell me.â
They looked at you skeptically, scrutinizing your face for any trace of lying. When they found none, they seemed to relax just a bit. âI guess I could tell you some things.â
âAw, you do like me,â you teased earning an unconvincing face of disgust.
âItâs not like I like you or anything,â they argued, the heat easily felt coming from their face intensified, âIâm just beingâŚpolite.â
âMhm,â you cooed, poking their shoulder. âThen, by all means, be âpoliteâ Mercury.â
âHumph.â They glanced around, trying to think of facts that didnât sound absolutely lame. âWellâŚI donât really have an atmosphere, itâs really just a thin exosphere.â
âIs that why youâre not as hot as Venus?â Suddenly, you realized that came out wrong, âtemperature wise? YâknowâŚbecause youâre closer to the Sun?â
Mercury sighed and nodded their head, âItâs whatever, but yeah.â
âI didnât mean it like that, come on, Mercury.â
ââŚhow about another fact?â They looked at you again, uncertainty still in their eyes.
ââŚokay, uh,â the mumbled, scratching at their face. âMy day is longer than my year.â
ââŚwhat does that even mean?â
âWell, scientifically speaking. 88 of your earth days is one of my years,â they didnât seem to notice that had gotten closer, and you werenât going to mention it, âand one of my days is 176 of your days.â
âThatâs...â you tried to wrap your brain around it, âthatâs weird.â
âAnything else?â They seemed off guard each passing time you asked them to elaborate. Between facts theyâd glance at you uneasily, lips perpetually in a confused pout. Theyâre adorable. âWhile weâre on topicâŚgot any moons?â They fake gagged, shaking their head.
âNo, thatâs probably why I have these craters,â They grumbles, absentmindedly running a hand along their face.
âI think your craters are endearing.â
âDonât speak so loud, Venus will flaunt hers if she heard you.â Hey! That was a joke!
You chuckle quietly before nodding, leaning closer. âDonât stop, I like hearing about you.â
âWhy?â They scoffed. âIâm not as hospitable as Earth, hot as Venus- I havenât been as popular as Mars since AD,â they continued on, face contorting into bitterness.
âI think youâre cool.â
âMy nights do get to -180 degrees Celsius.â
âThatâs not what I meant! I mean, I think youâre neat.â
âYeah, like, I like you.â Their lips tightened as a small, surprised, squeak came from their throat. âWhy is that so surprising to you?â
âBecause that doesnât happen.â They seemed to close up again, scooting away from you again, arms crossing. âNot to me.â
âWell, look out, buddy,â You inched closer, bumping their shoulder with yours, âit sure is happening to you now.â They let out a huff before shaking their head.
âPolite?â you quipped, adding a wink. They stared at you with a straight face, annoyance and fondness swirling in their red eyes. âI really do like learning about you, Mercury.â
âS-stop being weird.â Their face scrunched up as they looked away, you could feel the embarrassed heat coming off their face from here. âGeezâŚâ
âHey, câmon, Mercury, no need to get so guarded, is it really that strange for someone to like you?â They turned to look at you, a surprised squeak sounding as they realized how close your faces were now. The heat wasâŚa lot for you, but you werenât going to back down. They gulped, but held your stair, albeit nervously.
âI-ItâŚâ They swallowed again, but their eyes flickered between your eyes and your lips, their nerves easily visible. They quickly pulled away, shaking their head. âYes, it is.â
Back to pouting then, fine. You can handle a little pouting.
âWell then, I guess Iâm strange.â
âYouâre so weird.â They looked at you again, a teasing smile on their face. Cute!
âIâm getting kinda tired, besides, I think the documentary is over.â Sure enough, people were walking from the screen that was playing credits. Mercury couldnât help but roll their eyes at the sight of Earth laughing and chatting with a large group of guys from the Basketball team.
âLetâs get you home then.â They stand up and offer their hand, much to your surprise. Judging by how they refused to meet your gaze and how badly their hand was shaking, you didnât argue or poke fun, taking it and standing to your feet.
The trip was mostly uneventful, other than earth eagerly telling you how fun the documentary was, and it was sad that you missed it. That, and that Mercury didnât let go of your hand, not until you made it to your dorm.
As expected, your roommate was gone and the dorm was, thankfully, decent. Earth gave you a parting hug before telling Mercury heâd be downstairs. Mercury didnât seem to even blink until the door was closed.
âSo, I guess this isâŚâ before you could finish you felt lips on yours. Slightly cool and unsure. The hand holding yours seemed to tighten slightly, the nervous shaking returning. Mercury went to pull away to apologize, never getting the chance to as you tugged them closer by the collar, their hands nervously rested on your hips. When you finally pulled away, you notice what may be the first time youâve seen them smile that hard.
âOf course, it was.â You peck them on the forehead, earning a subsequent kiss on the cheek.
âI should let you get some sleep, huh?â They chuckled nervously, swallowing the lump in their throat.
âOkay,â you said quietly, taking their hand and squeezing it reassuringly. âBye.â
âBye,â they whisper back, quietly leaving your room. You got ready for bed and found yourself in a pleasant dream.
What happened last night?
You vaguely remember studying- and judging by the open textbook on your desk, you must have called it a night. You get out of bed, yawning as you stretch and pull yourself out of bed. You walk over to your desk, ready to get some pre-breakfast studying going until you notice something sitting right there between the open pages. It was open to the section on Mercury. Strange, you remember vaguely something about that last night. On closer inspection you think youâve figured out what was sitting in your textbook.
You pick it up and realize itâs not a CD at all, but a DVD! Thereâs a sticky note stuck to the cover.
You seemed pretty interested in meâŚI still think youâre weird, but you can watch this to learn more I guess (orâŚif you miss me)
It was hard not to feel a bit warm at the gesture, that obviously was pretty embarrassing for them considering the amount of words scratched out on the note and the hearts in the corner poorly scribbled out. You set the DVD aside and shut your textbook.
