one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
you should have seen me a couple of years ago!
it really pisses me off when adults sit there and drill it into kidsā heads that their youth is fleeting and tell them things like āenjoy your childhood while it lasts because this is the best itās gonna getā. why are you telling children that adulthood is the worst thing they can experience? seriously what the fuck is wrong with you, why are you trying to make them feel like growing up is a fate worse than death? trying to convince them their life is over before it even begins? iām tired of that shit. because tell my why my 12 year old cousin told me when she turns 30 sheāll be so depressed sheās just gonna cry all the time. what the fuck. kids donāt need to hear that their already stressful and overwhelming lives are never going to get better, that the abuse and lack of autonomy they face is apparently the highlight of their lives. they need to hear about adults who are happy to be alive and happy to have made it to their age. they need to know that growing up rules, itās a gift and life does not have to suck for them, that they have a future thatās worth sticking around for. this rhetoric is so damaging mentally and iām about to start hitting the adults who parrot it. iām sorry you hate your life but you donāt get to dump your issues on these kids. donāt piss me off and leave these babies alone!
honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before

women are like diamonds: synthetically-produced women are not meaningfully different from naturally-formed women, and anyone trying to tell you otherwise is probably trying to justify keeping their women mines open
Women are like diamonds since they are composed primarily of carbon.

Iām not trying to attack you or anything, just trying to get a more clear idea.
But from what Iām understanding a creator posted a boundary about something theyāre uncomfortable with and youāre just deciding to ignore it?? If so, thatās actually insanely disrespectful. If not, is there possibly something more clarifying to say?
Iām actually glad you asked! This is probably the last post Iām going to be making on this subject, but let me provide you with a comparison that might make things easier to understand.
This is a bit like someone you know saying; āHey, people listening to rap music makes me uncomfortable, can you please stop?ā
And itās like⦠what? I mean, I can⦠not play it out loud when I know youāre around. A bit of a weird request to make, but if itās really that bad, then I donāt mind making accommodations.
And they reply with; āNo. The fact that people listen to it all makes me uncomfortable. I want you to stop listening to it entirely. Itās against my boundaries.ā
Which like⦠that isnāt a boundary. A boundary is something that dictates how people interact with YOU. Like, I canāt even listen to it in my OWN privacy? How the hell does that affect you in any way, shape, or form? That isnāt a boundary, itās an attempt to control my personal agency and interests. I donāt even have to LIKE rap music very much for this to be a problem.
Then they say; āIf I catch you or anyone else in this community listening to or creating rap music, then I will be sending people to harass and excommunicate you from this space.ā
like⦠??? Iām sorry, but thatās absurd. You do realize how thatās entirely absurd and unreasonable, right? In a community that is known for loving and thrives off of it? It is not our job to coddle your internet experience- if something is triggering or makes you uncomfortable then it is your responsibility to avoid those things. I am not shoving these things in your face, and at this point youāre only going to find it if you are actively looking for it.
This doesnāt even begin to address the issue of queer-baiting and internalized homophobia of the matter. A fan space ultimately belongs to the fans, first and foremost. If there is something that makes you uncomfortable, then you donāt have to interact with it at all. When you share a creation, you forfeit control over how people perceive and interpret those things, thatās just the nature of art and performance. If you truly cannot handle the way people interact with the things you make, then perhaps this is not a career you are fully equipped to handle.
Hopefully this helps explain a couple things- this allegory has been floating around in my mind for a while, and I appreciate the excuse to share my perspective on things.
While I agree with you on some parts of this, yes the āI will send people after youā is insane, but at its core I think it is a well meaning genuine boundary. It is fair to not want people to make that content at all, if someone started shipping me and my friend I would be deeply uncomfortable, and while I agree that mcyters should be able to handle this, it gets to a point. Half of the Vsmp content I see is pyro x Scott and I totally understand why he wouldnāt want that to be the case, since he has a fiancĆ©e.
Also sometimes itās unavoidable. I donāt particularly like ships and donāt really engage with many by the community, with the exception of a few, yet I constantly see them. Often times thereās no way to filter them out on platforms such as yt, tumblr, pintrest and twitter. I agree that on fanfic sights you can filter tags out but again just the knowledge it exists is to much sometimes.
Also I think people need to get more used to creating things for you. Itās not like pyros gonna walk into your home and see that you have a fanart or two on your phone, just as long as you donāt post it, I donāt really see any issue in continuing to create fan works.
Another thing Iāve noticed is I donāt think this would be as big as an issue it is if Scott x pyro wasnāt such a popular ship. Boundaries change and since he was fine with it in the beginning itās really popular now, way more popular than it would have been if he wasnt comfortable with the ship during Vsmp. I think a lot of people complaining about this just want to keep their favorite ship, which is fair, but itās not like you have to get rid of it completely you just canāt post about it anymore. I think we need to normalize just talking to you friends about ships and not thousands of people online.
Anyways, if you see anything wrong please chat with me or reblog this! I would love to debate this :)
Again, I ought to reiterate⦠I am not shipping content creators or real people! This seems to be a common thread in people misunderstanding my points, so Iāll really get into it. āJack Von Pyroscytheā is not a real person, but a character. Differentiating fiction from reality is an incredibly important skill to have, and I believe that is especially true if you intend to be a public figure on the internet! I even remember cc!pyro receiving a question along the lines of āif he was using v!pyro as a way to explore certain aspects of his identity,ā to which they replied with a pretty resounding no, which is a pretty clear distinction to me. (Iād love to source this with the clip but tbh I donāt got time for that rn)
Itās not even particularly the focus on majorscythe that is much of an issue really, considering the ban was on shipping ANY of his characters in general, I believe. There are certainly less popular ships that are still affected, though I have trouble understanding why one might be more ādamagingā than the others. Shipping is a very community driven activity, which is probably why you might see it a lot in fan spaces, which are not something inherently FOR the creators.
Yes, itās something we can do in private! In fact, thatās what many people have chosen to do from here on out- but I just donāt think itās something people should be⦠harassed for posting publicly? The thought that it might make someone uncomfortable even if āthey know itās happeningā seems a little ridiculous, when you consider thatās just how being perceived can work in general? To repeat something I said to someone else, if you worry what other people might be thinking about you at every second of every day, itās only going to make you miserable- and thatās no oneās fault but your own. Thatās even going out on a limb and saying weāre even shipping real people to begin with, which we arenāt.
Itās very easy for some people to say to just drop it, just in case- but that is woefully neglectful to a number of people I know that it has become incredibly important to. It might sound silly to some, after all itās just internet shipping, right? But I mean⦠it isnāt hurting anyone. You donāt have to like it to think people should still be allowed to do it, really. Thatās the just the freedom that comes with interacting with stories and fiction on the internet.
Also⦠it is possible to filter tags on tumblr, and I believe twitter as well. Iām not gonna speak on the others since Iām not entirely sure, but you can block tags and things you donāt want to see on most sites, you might just have to look into some settings to do so.
