Saw a Symphogear meme this morning based on this video here
and I can't find it anymore but here's a G-Witch version.
It's that time of the year again!
Total Drama season where all the contestants are Gundam protagonists. Chris McClain is still the host though.
Proud to say I'm one of the 3 people who voted for the pole that blocked Jenny Nicholson's view at the Star Wars hotel in the poll for Schaffrillas's Star Wars character ranking.

One of my favourite things to see in Gundam is when a mobile suit hits the brakes.
One of my favourite things to see in Gundam is when a mobile suit hits the brakes.
Playing a bunch of Against The Storm again. Oh the euphoria of collecting A so I can turn it into B and mix B with C to create enough D that I can unlock the ability to make E.
Customer outside my window is whistling for their dog and it sounds almost exactly like the drones from Bioshock. It's actually tingling my fight or flight.
I love when it's a foggy night and the island I live on looks like its surrounded by VOID.

Finished season 2 of Netflix DMC and I found it to be a big improvement over season 1, which I don't despise like many others do but was dissapointed by.
I'm very chill, even encouraging of adaptations making big changes because if I wanted the same story I'd just stick with the source material. It just needs to stay true to the appeal of the source material. Season 1 failed at that in many ways like being more edgy than sincere, but my biggest issue was that it felt like a generic urban fantasy action show and that I wouldn't have stuck with it if I wasn't a DMC fan.
But this one had a big improvment in the action. There's more well-animated sword fights I'd expect from DMC and less clunky CG (Not that it's not still present with the devil triggers). It had more than one entertaining villain instead of just White Rabbit and a bunch of interchangeably characterised bosses from the games. I felt like Vergil gave Dante more to do. I thought Dante amd Lady's romance was cute. Overall I feel like I'd still enjoy this show if I wasn't a Devil May Cry fan.

Gundam twitter has been saying that the franchise only ever covers fictional politics so I double-checked some iconic scenes and wow, they were completely right!
anyone who claims that the presence of Obvious Nazis makes something "political" instantly discredits their entire argument
Nazis are dramatic shorthand for "everyone hate these guys and it is okay to kill them and not feel bad about it." using Nazis as bad guys is how you don't have to cover anything about their politics or their conditions or what led to their existence or what their worldview is.
to call that "political" is to define "political" in such a way that it conveys no information value. no person has ever used the argument "this had Nazis and Nazis are bad so it is political" who was not using it to justify the claim "I should never ever ever ever shut the fuck up about my opinion of American presidential politics and I should turn every single community I am in into an endless circlejerk about my opinion of American presidential politics."
human beings do not use this definition of the word "political", only shrieking fonts of entropy do that.
Also, regarding the third set of pics, I feel it is yet another example of Western people misunderstanding Japanese attitude towards LGBT and the way same-sex attraction can be and is shown in Japan and conflating visible representation of such attraction with endorsing it.
How the heck does one half of a show's main romance calling the other half's home planet "rather conservative" over the fact that she's shocked at the concept of gay marriage not count as endorsing it?
Even if this exact line wasn't in the show, how is any positive portrayal of same-sex romance not the same thing as "endorsement"? What is not endorsing it supposed to be? That you achknowledge that gay people exist but don't think they should be treated the same as straight people or something?
@ferhog Well, your reply is the exact thing I am talking about. Did you know from the very first second of the very first episode or the very first trailer of MBS:TWM that these two are going to be romantically connected? How so? Yes, they got engaged, but Suletta had no idea about that Asticassia rule when she decided to duel Guel. Not to mention that political engagements and arranged marriages rarely, if ever, consider the feelings of the people getting married. Again, Suletta didn't even know she would win the hand of Miorine in a duel. "From engagement to actual love" is a common trope in Asian literature, true, but the evolution of their relationship towards romantic feelings is part of an overarching plot of this particular work, not something that you would know from the get-go.
"How the heck does one half of a show's main romance calling the other half's home planet "rather conservative" over the fact that she's shocked at the concept of gay marriage not count as endorsing it?" I mean... that is just stating the obvious? The ability of two people of the same gender to marry is usually a sign of a liberal and politically progressive regimes rather than conservative ones. Unless you think that homosexual people existing is political in and of itself. "Even if this exact line wasn't in the show, how is any positive portrayal of same-sex romance not the same thing as "endorsement"?" Again, how exactly stating a fact "a positive portrayal of same-sex romance"? Mercury is socially conservative, thus the confusion of Suletta not just with her sudden engagement to Miorine, but the fact that she got engaged to a woman at all. "What is not endorsing it supposed to be? That you achknowledge that gay people exist but don't think they should be treated the same as straight people or something?" I mean... yeah? That is exactly how homophobic people usually behave towards homosexual people. I mean, they(as in, homophobes) absolutely DO know that gay people exist, they just do not think that gay people should be treated equally on personal or systematic level for any reason that they hold. You think - what? homophobes can't detect gay people or something?
Did I know that Suletta and Miorine were going to have a romantic relationship from the very first trailer? No. The marketing went out of its way to hide that plotline.
But the end of the first episode makes the intent pretty clear. It's a forced marriage neither character is enthused about in-universe but the music and visuals are potraying it pretty positively, basically coding this like a rom-com premise. It's very different to a negative portrayal like in the Tale of The Princess Kaguya where the titular protagonist runs off into the dark night in chaotic, unrestrained animation.
The knowledge that Suletta and Miorine are engaged then recontextualizes how they're interacting in the posters, OP, and ED.
Theoretically this COULD have been a show in which two girls who were engaged by happenstance were just friends, but they didn't do anything to challenge the automatic assumption that two leads who are engaged for one reason or another are the story's main romance.
As for the question of whether or not just being gay is political, that's part of the problem where no one can agree on what falls under the label of political, because for some people it is just a normal part of life while others call their very existence a movement or agenda or whatever, largely because they think it's a choice or lifestyle. It's not even an entirely homophobic mindset, as I've even seen a few leftists say that being born gay is a misconception, the most famous example probably being radical feminists who swear off men and choose to only date women, which is literally called political lesbianism.
This is also why the concept of achknowledging gay people but not being in favor of their rights is weird to me. A homophobe that doesn't actually believe in them and thinks its a choice makes sense. They believe its a problem that needs to be fixed. A homophobe that believes that you're born gay but shouldn't be allowed to get married or whatever just seems nonsensical.
I didn't wake up today expecting to see my Devil May Cry ship finally canonized after all these years (Mainly because I forgot the new season came out yesterday) but thank you... other 2 credited writers on the episode because I don't want to thank Adi Shanker.
(It may be imperfect adaptations of the characters, but I'll take what I can get)
