Summary:

Feng Xin had never meant to ascend.

He never wanted to, not after the disaster of Xie Lian’s ascension. Not after bearing witness to the wall of apathy against which the storm of his despair had crashed. Did he have his own doubts? Of course he had. He might have been a noble but he had also been a servant. And people are not as guarded around servants. As such, the idealism that his prince had harboured in his heart had never been part of Feng Xin’s upbringing. He had wanted to believe that they could make a difference.

Desperately.

Or: Feng Xin ascends without meaning to and finds himself grappling with grief and loss, more isolated than he ever thought possible. Until a certain someone decided to befriend him.

The man in the doorway was as different from Xie Lian as anyone could ever be. He was clad in black robes, sewn from a fabric lovelier than anything Feng Xin had seen in months. Behind him, the moon rose into the night sky, casting him in a silver glow. He looked ethereal, a god stepping down from Heaven, a ghost coming home with unfinished business.

Mu Qing stepped forwards. He stood there, past the threshold of their house, tall and proud, despite the bag slung over his shoulder. His eyes gave him away, shifting back and forth, with all the nervousness of a doe.

Or, Feng Xin finds his world turned upside down when Mu Qing shows up at his door with a bag of rice and an offer for help.

So glad I got to work on this cover piece for the @fengxinzine! Life became insanely busy shortly after we started the zine and has not slowed down since, but I’m grateful to have been able to participate with a wonderful group of creators to make a zine for one of our favorite characters!
