Scent(s):Â Regular hotel room soap (changes with the season), leather and motor oil, more the smell of detergent he uses to clean his pistol than the gunshot residue itself.

PERSONALITY
Summary: Not a showman by nature, Felix is always the person at the back of the room whoâs smiling into his drink while someone else whispers the naughty suggestions into the ears of others. Having been taught invisibility is a virtue, his less-noble instincts have to find an outlet somewhere. (And no, having a long-standing affair, culminating in a tempestuous marriage with his hostsâ maid was hardly enough.) At his best, he is a loyal friend and a consummate professional. Maud and he are a pair of aces, a well-choreographed dance that either brightens the party or sets the room on fire. In hard times, he becomes hopeless and desperate. Composure turns into cold-heartedness; his ability to bring out the best in others a diving rod for their weaknesses. Everything in life becomes a game, people divisible into teammates and opponents. And shooting has always been a solo sport.

MISCELLANEOUS HEADCANONS
âLuckyâ Lombard is purely his professional name, not that heâs ashamed of being just Felix Castillo. His parents emigrated from Tepic to San Antonio to escape growing religious tensions, and heâs thrown himself into his new American life and never looked back.
Competes in the menâs 30m Rapid Fire Pistol category with a Smith & Wesson with fixed sights. Has a good run (fourth in the Olympics is a better outcome than laymen think) and his pan-European win of 1922 was the last high of an eight-year career. He has gotten used to being able to live off sponsorships and prize winnings, spending extra whenever thereâs something to celebrate.
Has been on a slippery slope of bad luck that he fears might be comeuppance for his winning streak. Overconfidence made him bet on himself in South America, and then the car accident followed. Now he absolutely cannot tell Maud how bad their money problems are (their relationship hasnât been honest like that for a while), but he also feels the pressure to keep spending like nothingâs happened.
Drives a 1921 Gardner convertible (seats five, thank you very much) that took a big bite out of his savings and was his pride and joy until he got into an argument with Maud and nearly ran them off a cliff.
Essentially a âwife guyâ even though the marriage is perennially on the rocks. His temper is slow to rise and runs righteous, not ugly, which is how heâs defended it to himself all these years. He sees people in rocky, unsalvageable marriages, women reduced to shadows of their husbands and thanks God itâs not him and Maud. (As if what they have is so much better.)
Calls her âDoraâ because she might as well be a snake charmer (encantadora de serpientes). Sheâs like a Valkyrie come down above. She wonât stand for complacency; sheâs so ambitious it burns; sheâs sex personified; sheâs his whole heart.
Poor reader; excellent dancer. Always the first to nudge the needle of the record player or fan the flames of a deliciously bad idea. Measured and level-headed, he gives good advice and is a patient friend. His only weakness is his wife.
Met Maud when he was in England for a competition and a benefactor took him to a party at Montmere House. He kept finding excuses to come back. That ugly uniform be damned, she had bewitched him (body and soul, etc. etc.). He still dreams of her, but theyâre more like nightmares now. Having come close once to killing her, the thought is constant and intrusive.
Sometimes, in the fantasy, sheâs pointing a pistol back at him; other times, he pulls the trigger. Heâd give anything for it to not come true, but he sees the way she looks at him. All that love reduced to resentment and recrimination, like he conned her into choosing this life and heâs the one who let her down, and it just makes him so angry.
