I visited ‘Casa Carlo Mollino’ this week. I’d tried two years earlier, but my request was met with laughter-they book months, if not years, in advance apparently.

Mollino was a strange man. His life’s work seems less his architecture than the pornography he meticulously staged in two dedicated apartments - uncovered when died. He had no heirs, so everything went to the Italian state when he died

But stranger still are the father and son who now manage what they’ve assembled of his legacy, having seized the opportunity left by the absence of any estate or will. They are the main custodians of his legacy.

Instead of a grounded history, the tour veers into the afterlife, ancient Egypt, and esoteric symbols. The pair come across as cultists devoted to their self-appointed idol- the dead Mollino.

I wanted to inquire about Mussolini and the impact of the war on Italian design. Instead, I ended up watching a seance with “Mollino” speaking through a medium - while the father pressed for answers about the architect, the afterlife, and the Egyptians.

One Christmas, not so long ago, I attended midnight mass at this church with a friends family. I took LSD before hand. The priest made a big fuss, if I remember correctly, for the boys in front who had joined the military. Afterwards, outside in the cold, we all ate Panettone and drank Prosecco.
