At the moment when I’m working on complex pictures like this one I paint with the “fill in” approach: I complete one area of the painting at a time starting from the far background. It works but it’s not the optimal approach yet as I’ve found it’s very easy to paint in too much contrast in the far background with this method for lack of immediate comparison with more contrasted forground parts - it works much better for paintings with a dark background and few foreground elements. For the next paintings with detailed backgrounds I’m moving towards a more unified approach starting with a full underpainting to block in the values of everything forst. It’s actually moving back to the approach I was using for my first paintings years ago, but I had abandoned it since I lacked many of the skills and experience needed to pull it off properly. We’ll see whether it will work better now…
