#4 Pyrenean Ibex. Cause of extinction is unclear, but scientists believe it was because of hunting, competition, and disease. This ibex was the first extinct animal that scientists successfully cloned. Unfortunately, the baby only lived for about 9 minutes, due to lung defects. The flowers are convolvulus major, which symbolize “dead hope.”

#3 Schomburgk’s Deer with peony flowers, which represent “shame.” This deer was hunted to extinction. They also suffered habitat loss, as their grazing land was cleared away to grow rice.

I’m slowly becoming more active on tumblr so I decided to post each of my 11 illustrations from my AP Studio Art portfolio (concentration). This is #2, the Barbary lion. These lions were used in Roman gladiator fights. They were imported from North Africa, where they were sometimes gifted to royalty. The flower is campion, meaning “I fall victim.”

The passenger pigeon carrying away the last egg of her kind. It was said that their flocks covered the whole sky and that they sounded like thunder. They went extinct mainly because of over hunting and habitat loss. The flowers are cyclamen, which represent “goodbye.”
